2018 Recruits

While I don't really have the time (or inclination) to track Flyer FB commits this year, I did stumble across one early commitment, so I thought I would get a thread started. Hopefully, one of the administrators can pin this at the top and others can locate/post other commitments as they role in.

Josh Trautman/Pittsburgh Central Catholic (Pa)/OL/6'3"-285#
Hudl: http://www.hudl.com/profile/5331355/josh-trautman

With this commitment, the Flyers have cornered the market for "Trautmans" in the PFL. Welcome, Josh...you made a great decision.

Note: The fact that I'm still reading/posting on this site should be a good indicator as to the return of at least one of the seniors for his 5th year.

Great news, Love watching him play

Another recent commit:

Jake Chisholm/Ryle HS (KY)/RB/5'9"-185#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/5522019/jake-chisholm

Compact, powerful runner w/speed (4.51/40), with offers from Morehead St. and Butler (and a PWO offer from W. Kent). Welcome, Jake...you made a great choice.

NEOFlyer 01-10-2018 10:58 AM

Here is a nice article about Mr. Chisholm. Kinda refreshing to hear that it's all not about the football.

FlyerIllini 01-11-2018 11:53 AM

Commit:

Zach Rumpke/LaSalle HS (OH)/OLB-DE/6'0"-200#
Hudl: http://www.hudl.com/profile/4009140/zach-rumpke/videos

This young man plays in a great HS football conf. against high-level competition. Looks athletic and has a high motor. Will need to bulk up considerably to play DE; may have been recruited for the Flyer position. Either way...Zach, you made a great choice.

FlyerIllini 01-13-2018 12:23 PM

QB Commit:

Jack Albers/St. Xavier HS (KY)/QB/6'1"-180#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/4364643...8eb82b6c3ea808

Good athlete who seems to throw the ball on-time and on-target. May have to shorten up the delivery time, but not a big issue. I liked that he included a few "toughness" clips of him blocking downfield and lowering his shoulder on runs.

Congrats, Jack...you made a great choice.

FlyerIllini 01-15-2018 11:47 PM

Commit:

Grant Dyer/Covington Catholic (KY)/LB/6'1"-215#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/4531955/grant-dyer

Played on an undefeated state champion and was HM All-State. Plays downhill and is able to hold the edge. Offers from Bucknell and Butler.

Congrats, Grant...you made a great decision.

FlyerIllini 01-16-2018 12:52 PM

Commit:

Danny Meehan/Marist HS (IL)/LB/6'2"-215#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/5414954/danny-meehan

Another great looking LBer. Aggressive and explodes to the ball. Had an offer from Drake and some D-IIs. Combined with Mr. Dyer (above), they should provide good depth at LBer down the road.

Congrats, Danny...you made a great choice.

FlyerIllini 01-18-2018 11:08 AM

Commit:

Mason Ziegenfuss/Chardon HS (OH)/S-Flyr/6'2"-196#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/5461043...ef900ffccc3647

Very athletic and attacks on run support. Although primarily a safety in HS, given his combination of size and coverage skills, he seems like a perfect fit for the Flyer position. Wherever he winds up, he looks like a future stud for the Flyers. In addition to a number of D-II/III offers, he had an offer from Marist and a PWO offer from Furman.

Congrats, Mason...you made a great decision.

Note to Mason: It's the University of Dayton (not Dayton University).

FlyerIllini 01-18-2018 10:32 PM

Commit:

Owen Smith/Lehman Catholic HS (OH)/RB-DB/5'11"-185#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/4093121...f8cf390c4c1669

Not sure if he is being recruited as a RB or DB, but should do well in either spot. As a RB, he sees the hole well, plants his foot and gets north/south. As a DB, he seems to have a nose for the ball and doesn't shy away from contact.

Congrats, Owen...you made a great choice.

FlyerIllini 01-18-2018 10:39 PM

Commit:

Joe Durham/Bishop Fenwick HS (OH)/LB/6'3"-225#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/3870842...e2a708c4a2e0b6

A big, strong LB coming out of HS. Definitely has a nose for the ball and the ability to play off blocks. If he bulks up, they may consider him for DE or even DT. If he stays at LB, combined with the commits above, the Flyers will have plenty of competition at that position in a few years. Had offers from Butler and Valpo.

Congrats, Joe...you made a great decision.

FlyerIllini 01-23-2018 09:44 AM

Any chance a moderator can pin this thread at the top? Thanks.

FlyerIllini 01-24-2018 10:11 AM

Commit:

Khalis Hicks/Sycamore HS (OH)/CB/5'8"-170#
Hudl: http://www.hudl.com/profile/4102051/...ah-Wayne-Hicks

A little undersized, but definitely makes up for it with aggressiveness and athleticism. Led his conf. in interceptions, so he has the the coverage skills. Also solid in the run game setting the edge. As a bonus, he appears to be an accomplished punt/kick returner. Had an offer from Butler and some D-IIs.

Congrats, Khalis...you made great choice.

FlyerIllini 01-24-2018 10:19 AM

Summary of the 10 commits thus far:

OL= 1 (Trautman)
RB= 2 (Chisholm, Smith)
QB= 1 (Albers)
DE= 1 (Rumpke)
LB= 3 (Dyer, Meehan, Durham)
S/Flyr= 1 (Ziegenfuss)
CB= 1 (Hicks)

There are a number of offers out there, so more commits should be rolling in soon.

FlyerIllini 01-24-2018 02:15 PM

Commit:

Michael Stodola/Barrington HS (IL)/DL/6'1"-245#
Hudl: http://www.hudl.com/profile/5433742/Michael-Stodola

Great combination of low pad level and high motor. Listed at 245lbs, but looks bigger than that and strong. With a year in a college lifting program, he should add at least 25lbs and could be a monster. Had and offer from Butler.

Congrats, Michael...you made a great choice.

UD62 01-24-2018 04:06 PM

Seems like we are poaching Butler

FlyerIllini 01-24-2018 06:20 PM

Many (if not most) of players on the rosters for both Dayton and Butler had offers from both schools. Same with Drake. Each school gets their share. That dynamic is part of the reason for San Diego's success. They don't have the same geographic competition for players that fit at this level.

FlyerIllini 01-25-2018 05:34 PM

Commit:

Matt Torey/Brother Rice HS (MI)/WR/5'10"-175#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/6342219...97642b28e63c7f

A good route runner who can catch the ball in traffic. Seems to have a knack for finding soft spot in zone coverage, and can run after the catch. HM All-State in Michigan's small school division. Had an offer from Lehigh.

Congrats, Matt...you made a great choice.

Flyer Gramps 01-26-2018 10:35 AM

Thanx Chris

Thanks to Chris R, founder, Chief of Staff, editor and great UD sports fan who started this Forum called UD Pride; he moved the 2018 Recruits into the "sticky" position again for us.

Chris wrote me that he doesn't post in football much but always reads it & in fact follows it via our messages. He's heavy into soccer & some volleyball.

So here we go, another year with the elongated spheroid and a chance to beat San Diego. The best thing the PFL can do for itself is schedule UD vs USD at the end of the season.

Thanks for the efforts you guys do in searching for recruits, especially Flyer Illini. Eleven years ago there was hardly anybody announcing their recruitment to small programs like UD. So they are easier to find but still take your time. So lets see some Soph and Jr dads joining the search. And...I look forward to meeting some new fathers once their son's announce their choice. Oh, also welcome to any grandfathers. With more of them each year being internet savvy, our ranks should grow. I was a grandpa & got stuck on UD football for long after the kid was done playing. It can be addictive!

FlyerIllini 01-26-2018 11:55 AM

FlyerGramps: Thanks for helping get this pinned (thanks to Chris R. as well). Despite my opening post, it appears that I do have the time/inclination to find and post about these future Flyers. You're correct that it is getting much easier to find them. It helps that I've become a little more savvy about how to search in Twitter. In addition to checking the coaches tweets, I've found that searching for the words: "blessed" "honored" or "excited," together with "Dayton football," usually turns up most of them.

As for USD, I have some reason to believe that the Flyers will be traveling to San Diego much later this year. Perhaps even in November. Stay tuned.

UD62 01-26-2018 12:53 PM

Glad to see the possibility of a UD/ SDU game late in the year. Having them play early, as has been the model, didn't make sense to me as most years it put the loser behind the eight ball all year, and the interest in the championship suffered. Both teams are in the championship mix most years and having them meet late only adds interest.

Commit:

Nelson Perrin III/Scott HS (KY)/CB/5'8"-175#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/4022519/Nelson-Perrin-lll

Played RB also, but I'm assuming he's being recruited as a CB. While a bit undersized, he is very fast and breaks on the ball well. Was a state-level track guy and lists his 40 time at 4.45. No substitute for speed.

Congrats, Nelson...you made a great decision.

FlyerIllini 01-29-2018 03:18 PM

Commit:

Christian (Shin) Kelly/Sycamore HS (OH)/CB/5'8"-165#
Hudl: https://l.hudl.com/profile/4272267/Christian-Kelly

I had to double-check this one as he is a virtual carbon copy of his HS teammate, Khalis Hicks (listed above). Very similar body types and both play bigger than their listed height. Like his teammate, Mr. Kelly is fast and closes quickly on the ball. He also doesn't seem to have a problem coming up on run support. Had an offer from Butler.
Pretty impressive tandem of DBs for a HS program.

Congrats, Shin...you made a great choice.

FlyerIllini 01-29-2018 03:24 PM

Updated summary of the 14 commits thus far:

OL= 1 (Trautman)
RB= 2 (Chisholm, Smith)
QB= 1 (Albers)
WR= 1 (Torey)
DE= 1 (Rumpke)
DL= 1 (Stodola)
LB= 3 (Dyer, Meehan, Durham)
S/Flyr= 1 (Ziegenfuss)
CB= 3 (Hicks, Perrin, Kelly)

Looks like a focus on defense and, specifically, LB and CB. Makes sense given what they've lost the past 2 seasons (Beachler, Crain, Stubbs and Searles).

FlyerIllini 01-31-2018 02:07 PM

Note: Changed commitment to Wingate U.

Brian Hurley/Lake Braddock HS (VA)/DE/6'3"-225#

FlyerIllini 02-04-2018 02:50 PM

Commit:

Jack Gewinner/DeSmet Jesuit HS (Mo)/DL/6'2"-250#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/4425280/Jack-Gewinner

Played both DE and DT, but likely being recruited as a DT. At either spot, he plays off blocks well and pursues to the ball. With a year of bulking up, he should be a good one.

Congrats, Jack...you made a great decision.

FlyerIllini 02-04-2018 02:59 PM

Commit:

Matthew Young/Central Catholic HS (MI)/LB/6"1"-220#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/6912635/Matthew-Young

Is aggressive and attacks ball carriers. Also played FB, so perhaps recruited for the H-back spot. Was a devastating blocker from the position. As an added bonus, he looks to be an accomplished long-snapper.

Congrats, Matthew...you made a great choice.

FlyerIllini 02-04-2018 03:03 PM

Commit:

Sam Broom/Charlotte Catholic HS (NC)/CB/5'11"-170#
Hudl: https://wwwr.hudl.com/profile/4332351/Samuel-Broom

Fast and likes to hit. Plays with an "edge" which is important at CB. Lists his 40 time at 4.5. Had offers from Drake, Butler, Davidson and Jacksonville. The first Flyer commit from North Carolina since I've been paying attention.

Congrats, Sam...you made a great decision.

FlyerIllini 02-04-2018 03:11 PM

Updated summary of the 18 commits thus far:

OL= 1 (Trautman)
RB= 2 (Chisholm, Smith)
QB= 1 (Albers)
WR= 1 (Torey)
DE= 2 (Rumpke, Hurley)
DL= 2 (Stodola, Gewinner)
LB= 4 (Dyer, Meehan, Durham, Young)
S/Flyr= 1 (Ziegenfuss)
CB= 4 (Hicks, Perrin, Kelly, Broom)

Continued heavy emphasis on defense. Although they had a great OL class last year, still hoping there are a couple more OL about to commit. Could use a couple WRs and a TE as well.

FlyerIllini 02-05-2018 09:35 AM

Commit:

Kyle Finnick/Bishop Alemany HS (CA)/DL/6'2"-270#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/667859/...b42c0df0507562

A very good get from California. Good hands, strong and plays with a high motor. Great size for an incoming freshman. Listed as a 3-star prospect and played in the Blue-Grey HS All-American game (where he recorded a QB sack). Offers from Georgetown, Drake and Valpo.

Congrats, Kyle...you made a great decision.

FlyerIllini 02-06-2018 12:21 PM

Commit:

Jonny Krone/Francis Howell HS (MO)/WR/5'10"-175#
Hudl: http://www.hudl.com/profile/5554753/Jonny-Krone

Although not blazing fast, he is a very good route-runner with great hands. Appears to have a knack for finding the open spot in zones and is great at adjusting to balls that are off-target. Reminds me a little of former Flyer WR, Corey Stuart.

Congrats, Jonny...you made a great choice.

FlyerIllini 02-06-2018 12:39 PM

Commit:

Andrew Uhls/St. Xavier HS (KY)/DE/6'4"-235#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/4364733/ANDREW-UHLS

Perfect size for a Flyer DE. Holds the edge and plays off blocks well against the run. Also has the ability to be an edge rusher and get after the QB on passing downs. Had offers from Morehead St. and Murray State (unclear if it was a PWO).

Congrats, Andrew...you made a great choice.

FlyerIllini 02-07-2018 12:04 PM

Signing Day update of the 23 commits I know of thus far:

OL= 2 (Trautman, Geary)
RB= 3 (Chisholm, Smith, Young)
QB= 1 (Albers)
WR= 2 (Torey, Krone)
DE= 3 (Hurley, Uhls, Durham, Salemme)
DL= 3 (Stodola, Gewinner, Finnick)
LB= 3 (Dyer, Meehan, Rumpke)
S/Flyr= 1 (Ziegenfuss)
CB= 4 (Hicks, Perrin, Kelly, Broom)

If the projected positions above hold true, the breakdown of this group is: Offense=8; Defense=15.

The geographic distribution: Ohio=6; Kentucky=5; Illinois=3; Michigan=2; Missouri=2; California=1; North Carolina=1; Pennsylvania=1; Virginia=1; Wisconsin=1.

FlyerIllini 02-07-2018 04:49 PM

Commit:

Andrew Salemme/Marquette University HS (WI)/DE/6'4"-220#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/4618896/Andrew-Salemme

Long, rangy DE with a good burst. Has a solid frame that will bulk up. Played with his hand on the ground, so he will be comfortable with the Flyers' scheme. As a bonus, he can long-snap as well.

Congrats, Andrew...you made a great decision.

FlyerIllini 02-08-2018 09:57 AM

Commit:

Marty Geary/Loyola Academy HS (IL)/OL(?)/6'2"-265#
Hudl: http://www.hudl.com/profile/4055843/Martin-Geary

This one is a bit confusing. On his "signing" tweet, he is listed at OL. However, his hudl video describes him as a D-lineman and all of the highlights are at DL. In fact, he was All-state in Illinois' largest class at DL, and was the defensive player of the year in arguably the strongest HS football conference in the state. So, not sure if he really is targeted at OL or DL. Either way, this is a really good get. Big, strong, good feet and relentless. He comes from one of the strongest HS programs in Illinois and is used to winning. Had offers from North Dakota, Lafayette, Butler and Drake.

Congrats, Marty...you made a great choice.

NEOFlyer 02-08-2018 12:46 PM

Keep up the good work FI

Interesting that you've found 23 commits but UD's recruiting day announcement only has 22 commits. Either way, much lower in numbers this year but it seems many are quality recruits.

Good luck to them all. You just signed up for the best four years of your life.

GO FLYERS!!!

FlyerIllini 02-08-2018 01:41 PM

Neo: Thanks. They haven't received the signed letter (not a NLOI) from Brian Hurley, a DE from VA. If you check the Dayton football twitter account, you'll see that the other 22 have tweeted that they have "Signed," (on a template presumably provided by Dayton). Dayton then retweets their tweet. I checked Mr. Hurley's twitter account and it still suggests he's committed to the Flyers, so hopefully he just hasn't sent in the letter.

Note: Mr. Hurley apparently changed his mind and committed to Wingate U.

As for the overall numbers, Chambo suggested in the YouTube video that he thinks the final number will be 28. Better, but still a little lower than the past couple of years.

Commit:

Luke Ricobene/IC Catholic Prep HS (IL)/WR/6'0"-175#
Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/4577033/Luke-Ricobene

Played QB throughout his HS career, but apparently was recruited as a WR. Tore his ACL early in the 2nd game this past year. Had started at QB since his freshman year, and led his team to an undefeated state championship in 2016 as a junior. Good athlete, very high FB "IQ" and great leadership qualities. Assuming his knee recovers, he should be able to make the transition to WR seamlessly. While he may appear to be something of a gamble, I've seen him play several times and would never bet against him.

Congrats, Luke...you made a great decision.

Per his Twitter account:
Logan Hannah - Valley View HS (OH)/LB/6'1" 240#

His brother recently played at UD. Saw him at numerous UD games over the years. Very imposing young man. At that size, i can see him as DE or DT

https://www.hudl.com/video/3/3883086...1cd60af0237056

We wish him the best

Flyer Gramps 02-10-2018 09:34 AM

Glad to see a second recruit from NE Ohio - Valley View & Chardon.

Dayton football is not too well known in Northern Ohio (The Cleveland Plain Dealer sports news stops in Columbus) & most recruits have come from St. Ignatius or occasionally St. Edward.

And speaking to the point of not many recruits from North Carolina for the University of Dayton, there are not many Catholic High Schools down here; but a lot of higher education facilities with football programs.

Commit:

Cullen Krombach/St. Francis DeSales HS (OH)/OL/6'1"-270#
Hudl: http://www.hudl.com/profile/4371492/Cullen-Krombach

Mauler...that's the word that came to mind as I watched his Hudl video. This young man takes "block to the whistle" about as seriously as any HS player I've seen. Numerous highlights of him blocking 10+ yards down the field, and a crazy number of pancakes. He doesn't appear to use Twitter much, so not sure about other offers. Doesn't matter, this is a very good pickup.

Congrats, Cullen...you made a great decision.

NEOFlyer 02-10-2018 05:01 PM

Gramps... Valley View is just outside of Dayton. But I do agree we could do better at recruiting up here in NE Ohio.

Hope all is well in NC

A late addition, who was only offered a few days ago. Nonetheless, he looks like a good one. A taller WR with speed and good hands. Lists his 40 time as 4.43. If that's true, he likely would be the fastest player on the team. May get a shot early returning kicks.

Congrats, Joey...you made a great choice.

Besides what FlyerIllini mentioned about Joey, I like his upright running where his balance is so good that a fingernail tackle doesn't trip him up; he needs to be really tackled.

With that height & speed I wonder two things: is he deeply involved in basketball now or was he trying for a bigger program and could not land what he wanted? Either of those could have caused Joey to chose UD late. We'll take him!

Cardsflyer 02-16-2018 01:59 PM

I appreciate all the posts on players. I am very excited for our future. These young men are going to keep that Flyer Tradition going for the next 4 years.

Go Flyers!
