Calanda Broncos

Ok, so you must be wondering the relevance of the Calanda Broncos to Flyer football.... Well, it seems as though one Mr. Steve Valentino, MBA is going to play professional football for the Broncos! Word is that Steve will be a WR and even play some QB! The team is based in Switzerland. I do not think we have had a professional player since Jesse Obert kicked in the Arena leagues a few years back. Tino almost certainly will be our first former player to play professional football in Europe. What a cool thing to do for a talented young player like Steve.

Here is link to the team's site:

http://translate.google.com/translat...section%3Dhome

It does not sound like US players get rich playing there, but I understand that the teams make it worthwhile for US players to play in Europe. I know of at least one other PFL player who played in Europe, (Scotty Phadavong, RB from Drake). All reports from Scotty P indicated that is was a great experience.

It will be fun to follow Steve's professional career in Europe this Spring while we wait for the return of Flyer football in the fall.

2011 Europlayers ranking

American Football in Europe is played in the spring_from March to July.

There are many teams but not much overall coverage so the point spread in scheduled games is used to determine which teams are eligible for their country's tournament, their Region's tournament and the Eurobowl. Calandra Broncos (Calandra is the local brewery) did well last year and somehow have qualified for a trip to Helsinki, Finland for 2012.

Here's the final ranking of the top 25 out of 800 teams in Europe by the media site Europlayers:

Posted on 12 Oct 2011 - Go back to news list
Europlayers Final Season Top 25.

All leagues in Europe have now finished play with some upsets in the playoffs and finals. This changes the Top 25. The top three remain the same.

The Swarco Raiders remain as the Number 1. But Schwäbisch Hall's historic win in the German Bowl over Kiel bumps them up to number 4. Kiel moves in as number 5 but Carlstad drops down after losing a regular season game to the Tyreso Royal Crowns although they beat them in the Swedish final. The Düsseldorf Panther replace Marburg after beating them in the German playoffs. The Triangle Razorbacks' win over the Sollerod Gold Diggers in the Danish final puts them on the list.

We have had terrific feedback, both positive and negative, so please keep it up even if you disagree. This only makes our rankings the best in Europe.

1. Swarco Raiders – Austria

2. Vienna Vikings – Austria

3. Graz Giants - Austria

4. Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns - Germany

5. Kiel Baltic Hurricanes – Germany

6. Calanda Broncos – Switzerland

7. Carlstad Crusaders – Sweden

8. La Courneuve Flash – France

9. Mönchengladbach Mavericks

10. London Blitz - United Kingdom

11. Helsinki Wolverines – Finland

12. Düsseldorf Panther - Germany

13. Danube Dragons – Austria

14. Seinäjoki Crocodiles – Finland

15. Triangle Razorbacks - Denmark

16. Parma Panthers – Italy

17. Kragujevac Wild Boars – Serbia

18. Stuttgart Scorpions - Germany

19. Sollerod Gold Diggers - Denmark

20. Bologna Warriors – Italy

21. Pioners L'Hospitalet – Spain

22. London Warriors – United Kingdom

23. Vukovi Belgrade – Serbia

Europlayers write-up today

The Calanda Broncos (Swiss top division) have signed Div. I quarterback Steve Valentino.

http://www.europlayers.com/News/Steve-Valentino.jpg

Steve Valentino (5’11”, 180 lb) joins the Calanda Broncos after enjoying an outstanding four year career playing with the University of Dayton Flyers (NCAA Div. I FCS – Pioneer Football League).

In his senior season, as team captain, the versatile Valentino completed 163 of 289 passes for 2,218 yards and 16 touchdowns leading the Flyers to a 10-1 record. He also rushed 158 times for 712 yards and another eight touchdowns. He earned multiple honors including the Pioneer Football League Player of the Year award, 1st Team All PFL at quarterback, and the Ohio College Football Offensive Player of the Year. He was also a 1st Team Academic All PFL selection both in 2010 and 2009.

In 2009, his junior year, Steve started all 11 games at quarterback for the Flyers throwing for 2,376 yards and 14 touchdowns (170 of 286) while also rushing for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was the PFL Offensive Player of the Year and named the 1st Team All PFL Quarterback.

He began his career at Dayton as a wide receiver and in 2008 he hauled in 50 passes for 626 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned punts (24 for 283 yards) and kicks (19 for 454 yards).

The University of Dayton Flyers boast impressive football alumni. Hall of Fame member and Super Bowl winning coach (Pittsburgh Steelers – 1975, ’76, ’79, ’80) Chuck Noll played for the Flyers as did Super Bowl winning coach (Tampa Bay Buccaneers – 2003) and TV football analyst Jon Gruden.

Now that we have a player in the NBA it would be nice to have one in the NFL.

You may have never had one play in Europe until now. You may never see one play in the Eurobowl again! (Helsinki, Finland in 2012)

The only reason Steve isn't in the NFL is his size. The reason he played at Dayton is his size. Hard to have it both ways.

Just as his coming to UD seemed to interest players at his high school, two other Flyers have recently posted resumes in Europe!

UDBrian 12-28-2011 08:14 PM

I still have hopes that Steve will get a shot at the NFL with some more receiver playing time. I don't think he is bigger than one of the OSU guys who was undrafted and then stuck with a team his first try.

I agree that we aren't going to generally attract NFL talent without offering scholarships.

Check some of the 5-Photos on the Swedish website about Orebro Black Knights:.

No story yet from Italy & the Reggio Emili Hogs about signing Devon Langhorst. This is still the Europlayers site page:

Plain Dealer catches up with Valentino

The Cleveland Plain Dealer never writes about Dayton sports but they do follow locals after high school in a feature called "Whatever Happened to..."

The interview sheds a bit more light on Steve's career thinking and preparation for 5 months in Switzerland.

http://highschoolsports.cleveland.co...port-standout/

According to my map, he will be a long way from the Orebro Black Knights & JJ Vercammen in Sweden. But a train ride to Italy and the Reggio Emilia Hogs to see Devon Langhorst might not be out of reach. Also, I tried to buy some Calanda Beer glasses (many nice shapes) but it was too much work for them to export so they turned me down - twice! Will have to hoist in a Flyer coffee mug!

From a Swiss Football Website

Muggwyler and Valentino to Broncos

Thursday, February 2, 2012
http://safv.ch/wp-content/uploads/ca...-valentino.jpg
The Google translation is just words so you'll often find the verb out of place in a sentence, often at the end. Remember the team's home is Chur, the Grison's is their mountain region and no Americans return from 2011.

The Calanda Broncos are preparing for the upcoming football season 2012: The fans can look forward to it on several familiar faces.

Long hoped for, at last fact - proclaim the motto, the Calanda Broncos the return of the 'Prodigal Son' Tino Muggwyler: The Grisons running back, former two-time MVP for the Broncos, has in four years at the Hohenems Blue Devils the way to his home club regained. With the speedy 25-year-old Muggwyler and the 20-year-old rookie of the year, Andreas Gasser, the Broncos now have two young, local ball carrier in the squad, which belong to the absolute crème de la crème of the Swiss running backs. No wonder, are the Grisons - commit no import players on the main ball carrier position - as they did last year.

Not that the Grisons had no options: In addition to the returning safeties DJ Wolfe and Sasha Glavic - announce the Broncos the influx of US-rounder Steve Valentino, who in his college career at the University of Dayton - both of which also outstanding running backs are broke as a quarterback, running back and receiver numerous school records. The 24-year-old is expected to occur also in Grisons in different positions are used.

Besides the two inflows, the Broncos have to announce some starters: changes, for example, the outstanding quarterback Blake Barnes to the Lazio Marines to Rome, also included former NFL tight end Tripp Chandler and the American passport catcher Ivan Birungi are no longer a Broncos return. For several weeks, the new head coach Geoff Buffum and his Defense Coordinator Dave Likins in the Grisons.

The Swiss Cup 2012 starts for the Broncos in late March with a home game against promoted Bienna Jets, in the Euro Bowl (the football equivalent of the Football Champions League) meet the Grisons in mid-April at the Chur ring road on the Helsinki Wolverines.

Team formed - Practice Started

The Calanda Broncos team is very much formed, started practice last week in anticipation of opening the season on Sunday March 25th.

There are 11 "imports", three from USA, one Finland and the remainder from Canada and Germany. DJ Wolfe was a DB/SS at University of Oklahoma and was signed in 2008 by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted player. I believe he has been with Calanda for two seasons. Another DB, Andrew Preston from San Diego State has a nice wrtite-up (link below) is new and sharing an apartment with Valentino.

The " 2 new boys" are getting along well with their teammates and were duly impressed with the ride up the lift to the top of the mountain that's just out the back window! Weekday practice is from 9 -10:30pm because some of the "locals" have day jobs. One of the workouts that UD does not do is yoga so that was also a new experience although not entirely Swiss.

On a personal note, it may be doubtful that the nickname "Tino" will be used since the fast RB first name is Tino! Also, sports media there use the term "Allrounder" ; most teams have one and the Broncos have Steve. He will wear #7 and starts as a slot receiver. After the first practice the new coach put in some jet sweep plays. American football interest in Chur (pronounced Coor) is picking up.

Have fun following the chatter on Calanda Twitter

Lots of fun following the Calanda Broncos on twitter. Since twitter is new to Switzerland they don't have many followers. Note the banter about Watkins having more followers! Half of the " bronco followers" are ex-UD players/students! (the Tino draw)

Note the banter about just which QB the Broncos in Chur signed versus the Broncos in Denver! The Calanda guy has a good sense of humor!

News about special things at Sundays football opener. BTW, the jersey with #7 costs over $100 which is almost double a season ticket!!!

Broncos 70, Steve "takes it all the way"

Don't know when the game story will get onto website but here's the "import's" tweet:

Steve Valentino ‏ @BabyTino7
1st win for the Broncos. 70-0 over Winterthur. 1st touch as a Bronco went for PR TD. Also a short receiving TD. 1 carry, 25yds at QB

So from that it looks like his first touchdown came on a punt return and a second TD on short pass. If he played some 2nd half QB like planned, he probably just handed off because he only ran once for 25 yds.

Winterhur is a team that was upgraded to top league this spring after another team closed down. As the crow flies, Winterhur seems to be not too far west of Chur. But you have to drive north, then west to Zurich, then back south on the other side of "giant stone hills". Drive time when the Broncos return the favor is 2-1/2 hours.

Locals happy - Imports happy - Everbody enjoys a ROUT

Broncos rout for season opener

Monday, March 26, 2012
In bright sunshine and spring temperatures Calanda Broncos opened the the American Football 2012 season. In the game against the Winterthur Warriors showed the Grisons, that in 2012 no way around them. The game was already decided after the first quarter of play. The climbers had to be ultimately defeated the defending champion with a 70:00.

The 770 spectators in the stadium ring road in Churchill has been promised something to offer. Not only on the field was provided for spectacle, but next to the visitors was an unusual show offered. It started the first show before the Broncos touchdown. Shortly before kick-off a helicopter over his laps of the stadium and finally landed in the middle of the field. The honorary guest of the day, rappers and Mike Gimma Derungs representing the Calanda Broncos got out, the helicopter and brought the game ball, the referee crew. Shortly after the two teams marched to music and fireworks accompanied onto the field.
Four new tenants - four touchdowns
A fireworks display was then shortly after kickoff of the game ignited. The very first attack of the guests ended in a 55-yard punt return touchdown by newcomer Steve Valentino. The guests were not really up to speed and then the Broncos were an offensive no doubt who was the gentleman on the court. Tino Muggwyler, the first time, ran aground after four years abroad back to his regular team, was responsible for the next points of the hosts. Virtually every minute was followed by other items. Christian Steffani had made sure that the first three scores of the new season all went to the bank account of new entries. With Nate Fellberius was then the first time a player is worried for a touchdown, the last year and was already in the squad of wild horses. By 35:00 the game was already decided at halftime.
Touchdowns churning
The Broncos switched up a gear early on and changed back again to young, inexperienced players at different positions. This did not prevent it, yet to score at regular intervals. Pascal Maier, DJ Wolfe, Steve Valentino and linebacker with an interception return Behar Mustafa were responsible for the next four touchdowns of the Broncos. Marko Glavic led his team confident of touchdown touchdown before he then already middle of the third quarter of game when the score was 56:00 Steve Valentino as his replacement quarterback took place.
Young and old Swiss make a splash
The Broncos have now replaced virtually all the key players and thus gave their young local athletes a lot of playing time. With John Eggenberger, it was then that a young athlete who was responsible for the following points. But the boy was not just for show. Shortly after the beginning of the quarter final game changed the Broncos also have their third quarterback, the 47-year-old Patrick Moore. Moore is a veteran of the Swiss football scene, and his runs and passes to the public were always rewarded with great applause. He led the Broncos nor the last touchdown of the game. Again it was John Eggenberger, who earned the points and was anxious for the final score of 70:00.
Buffum solves a coach be Verprechen
The new head coach of the Broncos, Geoff Buffum and his team are so successful is an ideal start to the season. Not only the victory was never in question, he has redeemed his promise that every single team player is used. He even put on it one more. With the young pass catchers Dominik Philip was even a freshman in the starting lineup, which has only started a few months ago, the football games. Today not only the shining star international players, but also the strong local base of the Broncos and the team as a unit. For the Calanda Broncos next Sunday it will continue with an away game at the Biel / Bienna Jets.

Best to start with bike riding at your age!

Think the first Winterthur punt was his first touch & first touchdown!

Steve held for those kicks! He ran once from QB for 25 yards. Probably mostly hand-off at that time of game.

Owner & fans have to be happy with new coach. He promised to develop local talent and you see that EVERBODY played & one rookie started. This issue cost the last coach his job!

About 2-1/2 hour drive next week to Biel, south-west of Zurich (most of the league teams are within 1/2 hour drive from Zurich - except Chur)

Steve Valentino Punt Return TD video & teams in camp photo

We've got a link to the Broncos 1st TD of 2012 by Valentino, but first:
Listen carefully to the announcer's first words, he gives Steve's name
After some end zone celebrating, Steve walks over to hold for the x-point
Then #22 jumps to congratulate - that's Andrew Preston, roommate & LB from SDSU
Next onto field is #32, DJ Wolfe, DB & 2nd season w/Broncos from Okla
Finally #4 Tissi Robinson, 4th season, Am/German citizen, world traveler

http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=873831353020

This should be a photo of the teams; cheerleaders for three teams; Team 2 in front (red); Juniors in white; Senior team in rear (red); plus coaches. To find Steve's head, find #8 in white (center) then two rows back is "the kid".

Found this in local paper

Finally found the Southern Switzerland newspaper that Chur residents must read. They charge for most news so only 'redeposited" sports news is available and this is a few weeks old but it kinda introduces you to some main "imports" on the Calanda team:

On the left is Andrew Preston, a LB from San Diego State & Steve's roomie.
Next is Sasha Glavic, a 2nd year LB & younger brother of Marko
Next is DJ Wolfe, LB & 3-year starter at Okla in 2nd season with Broncos
Geoff Buffum is the Am. coach, first year with Calanda but coached in Germany prior.
Steve is the "All Rounder" but only 5'11" & 185#.
Marko Glavic has been a QB here & other teams for a number of years. He is 6'5" & 222#.:D

Thre Big Easter Egg Hunts...er, Football Games Saturday in Chur

Three games on tap Saturday with a Bronco II team (first year) playing at noon, followed by Junior Broncos (U19) at 3:00 and the Senior Broncos play a good opponent at 6:00. One can hardly not be a bit excited after reading part of the preview that is translated for you here:

Preview Calanda vs. Broncos. Bern Grizzlies

The Broncos Calanda load three times on Easter Saturday to equal an egg hunt. At Chur ring road there is a lunchtime from 12.00 clock eight-hour spectacle of American football experience. In that context, next to the clock at 18.00 Fanionteam the U-19 juniors at 15.00 clock on the Bern Grizzlies. The Bernese and successful start to the season and there may a more exciting fight for yards and touchdowns are expected. Previously there for the newly established second Team of the initial assessment Calanda Broncos in the National League C. They deny their debut at 12:00 against Neuchatel Knights.
http://www.calandabroncos.ch/images/...picBroncos.JPG

With two victories, the unchallenged Calanda Broncos have started in this year's championship. The two former enemies from Winterthur and Biel have gone up but only for this year down in the National League A and with the pace of the House of Lords in American football a bit overwhelmed. With the Bern Grizzlies now a true championship candidate stands on the board. The Bernese is an excellent start to the season and were able to defeat the favorite Gladiator from Basel in the first championship game with 35-14. The Bern is also the last team that beat the Broncos in the Swiss championship. This defeat, however, is almost three years and over 30 championship matches.

Pure Power Swiss from Bern
The Bern Grizzlies have a very strong squad of players of this season and avoid completely the use of foreign players gain. Nevertheless, they have enough quality and quantity in their ranks to take on the best in the domestic championship. The Calanda Broncos are certainly the biggest test of the team around quarterback Marcel Niklaus. Particular attention should have put the Broncos in preparation for this match to secure the quick ball carrier Fabian Schaller, who had two touchdowns last Sunday relevant role in the success of the Bern Grizzlies. Defense against the Bernese but the Broncos are likely to encounter even more resistance than in the last two games. Pass defender Sven Schaller and linebacker Michael Will Helmi were the outstanding players in the first Meisterschaftesspiel the Bernese. The Broncos should be warned of the Bernese Power.

An arsenal in dangerous weapons

The key roles on the part of the Broncos are distributed broadly. The most remarkable point collectors in this season were up to now passport catcher Christian Steffani and Returnspezialist Steve Valentino with three touchdowns each. But also the young Johannes Eggenberger was successful already three times. Quarterback Marko Glavic is in top form and for him an arsenal is available in dangerous weapons. Constantly beside the called Topscorern the Runningbacks Tino Muggwyler and Nate Fellberius, as well as DJ Wolfe are also good for points. Moreover there is last year's Swissbowl-MVP Lukas Lütscher and new entry Pascal Maier. Also with the defense the Broncos could already allow to credit points. The Linebacker Sunny Lamprecht and Behar Mustafa both have been able to achieve touchdowns and have also struck, otherwise, over and over again with positive actions.

Somewhere at this site at noon our time Saturday there will be reporting of significant events during the Senior game.

I received a tweet indicating that linebacker Jan Keller has passed away. I tried finding out more on the internet but about all I could come up with was that the circumstances have not been released yet.

Tino adds KO & WR jet sweep TD's

The competition of the Bern Grizzlies was better but the results the same. After learning Tuesday of the unexpected passing of their LB Jan Keller, the guys dedicated this evening to him and routed the Bernese 56-3.

Steve took the opening KO all the way in the first few seconds. Second qtr he scampered around end on a 17 yard TD run. His PR TD was called back but he had numerous catches for big yards.

The team had a planned break in practice until Friday & will all attend their teammates funeral wearing their Bronco red jerseys on Tuesday. Next Sunday at Winterthur they replay the opening opponent which was a 70-0 win!

Game cancelled but highlights ready

The Broncos game Sunday at Winterthur has been cancelled. They claim the field is "under water" from all the rain but more likely is the thought of playing the team that beat you 70-0 a month ago!

Oh well, you can look at some Tino highlights on a Hudl site. May remind you of a few years ago. He is #7, returns punts & is slot receiver. Also throws a pass. http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1304702/steve-valentino

I'll get you ready for next weeks BIG game. The Helsinki Wolverines come to Switzerland in a Euro-bowl game. Yes, the Wolverines have the uni & helmets to pass for a maze & blue bunch! They can run & pass but a defense that's suspect. Extra time for the Broncos will help.

Euro Bowl game Saturday

The first BIG Week has arrived & at 18:00 hours Saturday (noon here) the Helsinki Wolverines should have arrived in Chur at the Ringstrasse Field of the Calanda Broncos. This is the first of a home & away playoff type game between teams who earned their way last year. Kinda like home & away for the Flyers with say...Albany. The Broncs go to Finland on May 5th.

The web site has been offering tickets for several weeks & the VIP tickets are sold out (incl best seat, food & drink, access to field for about $50) All tickets selling well so a crowd about the size at UD will be ready.

There is a countdown clock going & I entered the "Guess the Score Contest". It will be Alumni Day & every former player gets free entry with snacks & drinks! They came out with a bright red Euro Bowl T-shirt which is much more exciting than their regular version. They have announced that a team is in place to provide live streaming. Don't hold your breath, they can't even get photos on the site & it might be the UD video team!

Anyway, it will finally be a big game, the reason Americans were imported. Calanda needs to shake off two weeks of "wet" rust. Helsinki is playing their first game. They have a marvelous offense with speed runners who have some power. Should be high-scoring after the 1st qtr. For Valentino, he needs to grow his 5-TD season count.

(Thanks DF for posting photos)

OOPS! Steve!

......
(4th Quarter) Quarterback and team leader, Marko Glavic, broadcast once more a stoic silence even threw the ball for three more touchdowns. Twice Christian Steffani was the recipient and was the last score of the evening concerned Steve Valentino. Immediately thereafter, Valentino took the same line then the offense and led the Broncos, who had meanwhile replaced most of the performers by young local young athletes once again over the whole field and was only stopped at the opponent's 1-yard line. The Helsinki Wolverines took everything but again, to the score with respect to the return game to improve, but managed not to score points. So it was perhaps a little too high in fancy, but mainly due to the complete dominance in the second half, absolutely deserved 49-6 for Calanda Broncos.

Story of the Basel game especially for you......

Steve Valentino leads Calanda Broncos to victory at Quarterback

Former University of Dayton Flyer Steve Valentino is now a member of the Calanda Broncos, the Swiss champion of the last three years and serious contender in the Eurobowl, the highest tournament, in all European football. The Broncos signed Valentino for his skills at Wide receiver and his explosiveness as a kick and punt return specialist. But not that exclusively. Steve Valentino also serves as backup quarterback to starter Marko Glavic. Yesterday, Valentino started his first game for the Broncos at the QB-position, when they rested many of their starters in the Swiss-league game vs. the Basel Gladiators.

Valentino took the job and he led his offense down the field, as if he was the signal-caller all the time. He threw perfect passes to local receivers like Lukas Lütscher and handled the option game with running backs Tino Muggwyler and Nathanel Fellberius. Tino Muggwyler scored the first touchdown of the game on a short run that came at the end of a drive, where Valentino more than once showed explosiveness in his running game. In the 2nd quarter, #7 scored a touchdown himself on a 4-yard run. Along with Muggwyler scoring his 2nd of three touchdowns of the night, the Basel Gladiators also scored on a short pass for a halftime score of 21:7.

As the game progressed, the Broncos pulled more and more of their starters off the field to rest them for Saturday’s Eurobowl game in Helsinki, Finland. Steve Valentino remained in the game and also passed for a touchdown, when he found his fullback Nathanel Fellberius in the endzone.

Heading into the 4th quarter, the day was over for Valentino, when the Broncos benched him in favor of the third string quarterback Patrick Moore. The 48-year old (!!) Moore from Alabama came to Switzerland more than 20 years ago, much like Steve Valentino to play football in overseas as a so called “import-player”. Obviously he stuck around, got married and now holds a Swiss passport. Who knows, maybe we still see Valentino at age 48 here in Chur, in the middle of the Alps, still playing at a high level and still helping develop young Swiss players.

But for now, Valentino returns to his original position as a wide receiver and return specialist for the next challenge in Eurobowl but I’m sure we’ll see him under center again in one of remaining Swiss league games. If not as a starter, then at least late in the game, when the Broncos lead with a big margin, as they usually do in the Swiss league, which is not really competitive with the level of the Broncos. They focus on the Eurobowl-tournament and their roster is clearly made to compete on the highest level in Europe.

So the Broncos have players with high college experience like former Oklahoma Sooner DJ Wolfe or SDSU Linebacker Andrew Preston and players, who have been in and out of NFL practice squads like Iro Luoto or Yoan Schnee, along with a skilled and highly motivated gang of local players and amateur players from all over Switzerland and its surrounding countries.

The fans love him – Steve Valentino – the big star from the United States of America. Like most “import-players”, he’s a fan favourite and a role model for young Swiss athletes.

Broncos move on in Euro playoff

The 4th ranked team :) in Europe looked better than that Saturday in Finland where they handled the Helsinki Wolverines 52-36.

In 1st half, Calanda scored easily on long runs or passes. Helsinki struggled for 2-TD. Was surprised with effort the Finns gave later.

Halftime score was 35-14. The first play of 2nd half was a long TD run by Broncos but it was called back for a 5 yd penalty. Then with 9:40 to play in Q-3, a lateral pass to Steve Valentino ended up a rain-maker pass to his open DJ Wolfe for a TD, 42-14.:D

Then the superior team fumbled twice & had an intentional penalty losing cool.Helsinki scored but 2-point try failed, 42-20 Broncs.

The first play of Q-4 was a reverse handoff to Valentino, then running right, he faked a dbl reverse handoff & threw a 35 yard laser to DJ Wolfe making score 49-20.

Helsinki made it 49-28....Now with 7:50 to play, Valentino took over at QB & after some runs, they kicked a FG. 52-28

Wolverines had last score again at 3;19 for the final 52-36

Helsinki would not KO or punt to Valentino - always short. They tried two onside KO late but Valentino was on the first line of All-Hands team. He held for all placekicks and his name was the only word (except Red Zone) that I understood on the audio coverage. Great video, no commercials, probably 4-5 cameras. Oh, if only UD could...Amen.

Two Sunday games with Swiss opponents & then off on Saturday 5-26 to Graz-Eggenberg to play the Graz Giants in the Euro Bowl 1/4 finals! Broncos have a positive +59 points which somehow decides something. One thing for sure, this Swiss offense isn't afraid to show trick plays with the talent they have! They are 21st Century!

Went back to the Helsinki site of the webcast & found some highlights of the Bronco win there last Saturday.

They show the two TD passes by #7 Steve Valentino (they replay both too). You'll also see him hold for a field goal as well as some good down field blocking.

Broncos win Sunday

The Bern Grizzlies have struggled with the better teams and today they did against the powerful Calanda Broncos, losing 57-7. Steve Valentino had 2-TD's in the first half.

At halftime it was 39-0 with some second stringers already on the field. Then in the 2nd half, with mostly locals, they held their own. And it's a good thing because the list of nagging & serious injuries is getting longer. The translation of the story about injuries is not understandable but suffice it to say, they called up 4 players from the U-19 team who also won 40-0 and are 5-0 on the season.

A weekend off & then the 8 hour drive to Austria for the quarter-final Euro Bowl game against the Graz Giants. The reporter said this will be the toughest test since losing their playoff game last year. Hope they have a TV broadcast in Graz.

Press begins Qtr-Final Buildup for Saturday in Austria

22nd May 2012, 13:46 I play a game for you

The Broncos travel to Graz, Calanda in the Alpine town of the famous rockers and European charts striker Andreas Gabalier (I sing a song for you), who is considered one of the biggest fans of the Graz Giants. The city of Graz is the second largest city of Austria 268'000 inhabitants and is located in Styria, near the borders with Slovenia and Hungary. 45 000 students attend the university and to the city a young life. Sun ..

To inspire Zurich, 05.23.12 mk (mk) It is for the Graz Giants also easy from their agglomeration with a population of around half a million boys, apprentices and students for American football. The founder of the Graz Giants was also such a student. In 1981 founded the Grazer Jus young student Stefan Herdey the Graz Giants. Through a newspaper ad, then he looked for strong, young men who were willing to play with it American Football. From the former team into a modern team has been created, which also has a professional structure, as all the leading Austrian team. Last summer, Graz was the scene of the preliminary matches of the Football World Cup.

A huge fan base

So what is there to Calanda Broncos have admitted, it is known only when one once in a while the game was in Graz. Graz has an average audience of over 3,000 spectators per game match. The fan base is huge and shows that without fans is not as easy as possible. Gabalier Andreas is one of the greatest fans in Graz, as he said in a recent television interview. "I sing a song for the" open-minded also reflects the population of Graz, which is typical of a frontier town. Graz has leased the nice weather here too, because it is very south. Vienna, Graz is how easily worth the trip.

I play a game for you

If the Broncos on Saturday afternoon in Calanda Eggenberger stadium for the semi-finals play, they play not only for glory and honor of the team, they represent the first time in Switzerland with an absolute top team. Victory or defeat is the question, but this is not the criterion. The Broncos are on the verge of the Swiss American Football to place European, so in the future of Swiss and European American football has its place. They are playing a game for us all.

Euro Bowl and a little bit more

The adventure begins today € Bowl so right. When Switzerland was already given in the American Football matter so much attention? If we express the guys fingers crossed, we wish you the great success and advancement. The Saturday will be the day of a big gift, of course, worked hard, earned against a class team - the Graz Giants. "I play a game for you" on Saturday to ask about 1500 Swiss Clock every American Footballer of fingers crossed and heart flutter. Finally, his team in the near future, the great beneficiary of a team that has started to leave to Europe.

In Graz, the Broncos want to ideology to favorites

In Graz, it sounds downright modest. We used to pile deep, very deep, while the team has a squad is to be compared easily with the Austrian national team. The "Real Madrid of the American Footballes" seems like the Giants give the Broncos a lot of respect for the citizens of Graz to have triggered. Head Coach Nick Johansen of the Graz Giants had but definitely, his troops very well adjusted to the enemy and will not back down even one. With a proud banner you will eventually reach Vienna.

Marcel cancer

Interview with Walter Tribolet (President) Calanda Broncos

SPH: Have you brought in for the injured people gain?

WT: No, we got no further reinforcements. This would not be possible because of the € 31.3 Bowl roster. must be fixed, then no changes can be made longer. But we need no more reinforcements.

SPH: Are all the other fit again?

WT: Players with "minor" injuries are all fit again. However, we have this year made the violation witch pretty hard with 8 players and 1 Swiss import "out for season". That amounted to just over 20% of the squad. This
other means must now assume more responsibility.

SPH: Graz is so sure a number greater than the Wolverines. There will be a roller coming towards you. What do you think about your opponent? Do you know some players?

WT: Graz has been established for years in the European top. Such a thing must be respected! Nevertheless, we have already proved last year that every team is beatable though it has not been enough for us. In Graz
Of course I know the QB Dunn and several other names. It does not succeed to the top of Europe such as Graz, without a very good squad.

SPH: The season runs the Bowl € 1/4 Final is imminent, because you will not get dizzy?

WT: No, I'm just on the game. It will be interesting to see how we prove ourselves this year.

SPH: You've got the rest in person, I do not ask for drumm talisman, beer, brandy and wine, it must somehow itch you anyway, or will you once again calmly sitting in the stands?

WT: I think this time it is "itchy" me a bit when I'm sitting in the stands. At least one semi-final at the same time would mean an automatic qualification for the quarter finals in the 2013th At the same time it would be a victory against a top team in the AFL. In this sense it is a very crucial game for us.

SPH: The Broncos are now safe environment for you and your daily conversation. We talked with you at home because it depends also, even the Broncos flag in the living room?

WT: It's amazing how many people already know the Broncos in our area and how often I am approached. In addition, we see more people with the Broncos logo on the streets, even if it is mostly the Denver Broncos logo! Otherwise, you will find in me no Broncos flags etc.etc. But I speak regularly with Robin "Ocho" Haas GM and our successful U19 coach. At home we speak only about the kids but mostly because my "Göttibuab" there playing and I must say, I really am incredibly proud of him.

Broncos Advance

For the first time in history, a Swiss team, the Calanda Broncos, will advance to the semi-finals of the Euro Bowl after eeking out a win at Eggenberg Stadium in Austria against last years semi-finalist the JCL Giants Graz 19-14.

The Broncos were rather rusty after a couple weeks off and only a couple practices. But the Giants made mistakes too so maybe it was the competition. Hope for stories & photos tomorrow; the Swiss Press traveled to Austria for the game.

The Broncos have a couple more league games and perhaps the Swiss Bowl before the Euro semi-finals. We'll find out tonight & tomorrow who the opponent will be.

On the Euro Bowl road in Austria

.A win is a win and this win was not pretty but hard fought 19-14. The Broncos played a good team and had enough talent to hold when needed & score enough points even though the two weeks off with only two practices made for some poor timing...like in hike, hike, oops... it was on three!

The next Euro challenge will be June 16 or 17th against the very impressive (they had 5 TV cameras covering their game yesterday) Swarco Raiders Tirol from Innsbruck. Hope the Broncs are better prepared than this time.

Here is what Marcel at Sprots Heute wrote before the game:

Stars in top form -
The Calanda stars with names like DJ Wolfe, Tissi Robinson, Sasha and Marko Glavic, the whirlwind, and arguably the best player at the moment Steve Valentino...

...and so you see that recognition has arrived in Europe for a former Flyer.

Back to 'cupcake' City

As expected the Calanda Broncos had no trouble in their home game against the Biel/Bienna Jets, winning 68-6.

Two quick intercepts by the Bronco defensive back stars Tissi Robinson & DJ Wolfe were both run back for scores. The 3rd intercept led to a running TD by Tino Muggwyler. Steve Valentino scored the 4th TD of the opening quarter with a punt return of over 70 yards.

Then the fun filled 2nd qtr. Well, read for yourself:

Legendary Trickspielzug(trick-play-move)

Highlights of the game was the beginning of the second quarter with no doubt a legendary and perfectly executed Trickspielzug Calanda the Broncos. In the so-called "Fumblerooskie" hiding behind his offensive line is Steve Valentino, QB Marko Glavic could pass the ball to him so unnoticed. During the play the entire offense a move to the right antäuschte, Valentino sprinted with the ball goes unnoticed by the Bielern 55 yards for a touchdown.

The starters were excused at halftime & Valentino took over at QB with the younger players. Well, that's until the end of the game when 42-year old Pepe Moore scored his first TD of the season!

Next week another Swiss team on the road & then the Euro Bowl semi-final against the Swarco Raiders Tirol in Innsbruck. I watched the Raider game last week & they looked unbeatable. Then I watched today & they eeked out 35-27 win at home against a mid-level opponent.

Tune-up Win at Basel

A week before the semi-final Euro Bowl playoff, the Calanda Broncos motored over to play their Swiss opponent, the Basel Gladiators.

The Broncos won 58-14 but the headline was scarey; they use the word "troubled". Apparently it was the first time this season when a Swiss team had a lead (0-7). Anyway, all went well. The usual resting of star QB Marko Glavic & other starters after the 35-7 first half. Valentino took over at QB & his troops put on some more points incl. his long TD run. Basel scored again against the second & third stringers. See if you can glean that from the story on their website:

...As you would already know the Calanda Broncos this season, they switched back early from their ranks and cheerfully left their collecting substitute players use a lot of time and experience again. In the second half, then took over the office of Steve Valentino playmaker Marko Glavic and led his team to yet another point. Among other things, he was also a self with a long touchdown run in the scorers list. Guard against the second and third of the people of Basel Grisons then managed another touchdown. Much more than cosmetic result was not anymore.

Next Saturday will be the most important game in Calanda Bronco 20-year history. The semi-final opponent - sometimes called Swarco Raiders & other times Tyrol Raiders - are a team very similar to the Broncs. The historical connection is that a few years ago, Marko Glavic was the QB & Geoff Buffan a coach when the Raiders won the Euro Bowl.

It will be on TV in Innsbruck & on the web for us. It will start at 2:00pm our time. I will post the link later.

After the game, the Broncos will motor 3 hours to Zurich, Switzerland so they can play their main competition for the Swiss Bowl on Sunday. It is unusual but not impossible that when playoffs get preference to a league schedule, the league game might be within a few days. It's up to the home team & the knuckleheads from Zurich chose the next day, Sunday. Then six days later Zurich will have to travel south to Chur & play Calanda at their home field. Now that could be a blood letting!

Watch the Euro Bowl Semi-finals Saturday afternoon

Samstag 2000 UHR

[Saturday 2000 Hour]

Yes, Saturday it is & 20 bells in Innsbruck is 2:00pm afternoon here for us. The Calanda Broncos tread where no Swiss team has won. They come with a coach & a few players who actually won this thing for their opponent a few years ago. The Swarco Raiders Tyrol are the epitome of Austrian success in the game of American football. I think they’ve won this 3 out of last 4 years and have been here 7 times! They are called the favorite; but many say it with tongue in cheek.

Switzerland is on a roll, have the talent to win and Saturday must prove it. Here is what the Swiss Sports Heute wrote, sometimes dramatically, on Thursday:

14th June 2012 09:36
We will be with you!

The semi-finals in Euro Bowl

Saturday it's finally time. In Innsbruck take the Calanda Broncos in the semifinals on the reigning € Bowl champions, the Raiders Swarco. The largest American football event of the Swiss AMF story is coming up. With the fan bus, train and aircraft are expected to 5-600 fans from Switzerland to Innsbruck. The Broncos continue to find good opportunities in the Tyrol. The final is within reach, the team's top and the players are hot, her team, paving the way to the finals. It is hard, but it's possible.

Zurich, 06.13.12 mk (mk) On Saturday night the Broncos will once again reach for the stars. The semi-finals in Euro Bowl in Tyrol, should be another milestone to the final. Here, the Broncos come across no less than the opponent Swarco Raiders, the reigning € Bowl winner.

A game of superlatives

History is written in Innsbruck anyway. The game throws in the run-high waves. Whether in the Tyrol or Switzerland, the Calanda Broncos are on everyone's lips. We also got respect, respect for the troops from the Grisons [Grisons is the mountain region of the Broncos]. Slowly the modern history has penetrated even abroad. What is on the banks of the Rhine is the emergence, spread like wildfire.

The chances are good for the Broncos, even though the Raiders are to be regarded as the favorites. The role of favorite, but also very stressed. In contrast, the Broncos can move freely and unencumbered. A decisive advantage. For the Raiders, much is at stake, so to speak, everything. The Broncos allowed! The organization hurries ahead of schedule at the moment.

I believe this to be the link to a full coverage TV game (maybe even some English):

Game should start at 2:00pm Dayton time

Good first half. Broncos up 28-3. Steve has two TD receptions. Video stream is TV quality and announcers are speaking English!!

Raiders backup QB in after starter injured. He is 17.... Broncos up 35-3.

Flyer Gramps 06-16-2012 05:01 PM

Very Unhappy Austrians

It was 28-3 Broncos late in 2nd qtr when the Raiders QB hurt his wrist & never returned. The 140#, 17-year-old backup QB played the remainder of the game. They did not score a TD with either QB. Broncos scored one & had another called back for interference on the opposite side of the field in half two.

The whole game was the first half!

The Austrian announcers spoke English - the regular play-by-play guy & he had the President of the Austrian-American Football Assoc. as the color announcer. When things went from bad to worse for the Raiders & after the game, their conversation was loaded with remarks about their "Austrian" team versus all the imports on the Swiss team. That is a fact, but one has to wonder if that subject would have been so prominent in the broadcast if the Raiders were the winner! They will get a rematch next year.

Game re-broadcast at 1:30pm on Monday afternoon. The final score on Monday will be Broncos-35 Raiders-3

Sensational adhesive Wonderful Dream

The Calanda Broncos win the semi-final with 3-35 (3-28)

A football sensation! The Broncos beat the favored superior Swarco Raiders Tirol and deserve. Throughout the game, the Raiders had never stood a chance. Steve Valentino opened with an insane touchdown, DJ Wolfe ran twice for 70 yards to success and TD. 3500 spectators watched the game standing on very high level, including 400 camp followers from Switzerland.

Innsbruck, 16.06.12-ak mk (mk) had been promised in the run too much. It was the play of the game. A spectacle at the highest level, a demonstration of the highest quality. [DjWolfe ran up the middle for two long TD's on the first play of two possessions!] The Swiss team of highly Calanda Broncos win earned the semi-finals and it smells even more. A team that plays for the size, will be hard to beat in the finals.

Quotes

Geoff Buffum Head Coach: That was really the play of the game. The team was a whole team that fought each other and each other. They have done everything right. Simply wonderful, unique, words fail me.

Walti Tribolet sponsor

I never would have thought. Incredibly, horny, a masterful team, I am simply delighted.

DJ Wolfe

SPH: What did you play DJ? DJW: Today was simply the day. It was such a horny, great game, I'm in it worked perfectly. I could only play, run score, and be happy. Something I have not seen for long. I'm happy!! What do you say to your two sprints? The exploit I succeeded wonderfully. I also trained for it, trained and trained again. The only way I could cover those two runs of 80 yards and accelerate towards the end again. Wonderful!

Steve Valentino beamed all over his face. His game, he knew, was unique. Valentino was not made hay to keep. His two touchdowns - the force. Mark de Swart played well (s) is a dream role in the team and simply each and every one was wearing something at the magnificent victory.

The game play

Fully focused on the Broncos went to the Tyrol. And it paid off. After a few minutes they went ahead and built it out till the end of the first quarters. Decisive in this phase of the game was that the Broncos were playing well but also targeted, made no mistakes and the Raiders came within a few minutes into severe hardships.

The second quarter broke the Austrians, then the neck. Many bugs left the Broncos come into play even better. It was surprising that the Raiders came along not too conditional. The half-time score was perfectly fine and the Swarco Raiders could also be grateful not to be even more lagging behind. The second half began as the first and the touchdown by Matt Hammer gave the Raiders the rest disappointment was already a bit wide, for they had expected a faster, more accurate and laufreudigere Raider team.

The Swiss American Football Verband wrote about the first two possessions:

...The last eight yards Glavic bridged with a beautiful pass to his ball catcher Steve Valentino. The Broncos were in Innsbruck with 0:07 in the lead and who believed that the Raiders would be to show a strong reaction, which was disappointed quickly. In the same vein, it also went on the second attempt. Again, it was Steve Valentino, who caught the decisive pass from Glavic, this time from about 24 yards away.

Next game is a postponed league game against the best Swiss opponent, the Zurich Renegades in Zurich on Tuesday at 1:30 their time. They play each other again on Saturday in Chur. Yes guys, that's three games in a week. That's Europe for you!

My Mail Call...from Chur (pronounced coor) Switzerland

Hey everyone,

Just got word from our owner that the EuroBowl final will be played [July 21st, full broadcast coverage world-wide] in Vaduz, Lichenstein. This is about an hour away from Chur and will save us from the 13 hr bus ride to play in Vienna.

The stadium is much bigger and seats about 6200 people, which they are expecting to fill; should be a great atmosphere. Not only did we move for a bigger arena but also after our game vs Zurich on Saturday [June 23], our home field is closed for the summer in order to, I kid you not, give the grass a summer break. I could not possibly make that up. Some of our fields that we practice on are as well being closed in order to rest the very sensitive Swiss grass.

As for upcoming games. The other Zurich game has been cancelled for good [did not play May 20th because of religious holiday - Acension weekend?]. We will play Winterthur [spring rainout] on Tuesday of next week, but no starters will play at all. On june 30th is our Swiss League semi final and then the following week will be our Swiss league final.

Exciting times for this organization and city. Have noticed an increase in attention and people noticing the Broncos much more this past week.

Hope everyone is well, love you guys.

[bracketed stuff added by gramps]

Zurich is the best Swiss competition. Remember, they were holding out for a make-up game with the Broncos a day after Calanda's semi-final Euro game. There is a lot of stubbornness, malice, orneriness, ethnic dislike, not so much on the field, but in operations of European football. Hope the boyz can focus on tommorow because this July Euro Bowl has been front & center all week. The press has finally moved from headline like "innsbruck Raiders lose" [Austria is the football power] to "Swiss Broncos host Euro Bowl".

In ten minutes to success

Calanda Broncos - Zurich Renegades 47-27 (27-13)

The air of the Renegades gave up just under half the time. In Zurich, the two half then broke within one minutes. Here, the Broncos played virtually the entire first half with totally changed blocks. Each for each and everyone on the position of the other.

Outstanding players were also revealed today by Steve Valentino of his great skill and carried away to let the audience applause.

The Zurich Chris Markey was virtually sidelined. His two touchdowns were still worth a visit and showed the dangers of the American. Even today you could see quite clearly that the difference between the two teams is great.

Now the Broncos meet next Saturday in the [Swiss] semifinals at the Bern Grizzlies. "

Victory Press is Exciting

Steve's getting more attention lately as the games get tougher & his play goes to a higher level. The team website story says:

...Steve Valentino scored his next pass from Marko Glavic caught again for the leadership of the host. At this stage it was a completely open game that could have on both sides can tilt. Broncos defender James Canetti provided with a ball captured after a quarterback sack - his third of the evening already - that the pendulum in favor of the Euro Bowl finalist turned down from Churchill. Even before the half time whistle Steve Valentino scored his third of four touchdowns for the Broncos 27:13 Pasuenführung for Calanda.
In [2nd half] attack, Steve Valentino, meanwhile, had the role of playmaker Marko Glavic adopted and later gave it to the next even number 3, the 48-year-old Patrick Moore. Steve Valentino provided with a drive from 34 yards away for another touchdown, his fourth of the evening. Together with Marko Glavic today he was the big star in the attack of the Grisons.

The website Sports-Heute [Sports Today] from Zurich was at the game & writer Marcel just loves Valentino & he wrote:

Steve Valentino once again - outstanding!

The little miracle man from America, it was again all that he knows everything that has to do with American football. His impressive, great football show fascinates not only the audience, but also experts and of course its huge fan base. Valentino demonstrated in several touchdowns, how strong he is. His safety catch on the long pass from Marko Glavic is also very impressive.

Meantime, Grandpa Chuck located the highlight tape of the semi-final win in Innsbruck over the formerly 1st ranked Swarco Raiders. In the video notice two things. When the Raider QB Callahan is running & loses the ball then moves ahead & falls on it he is injured. He went to the hospital for shoulder surgery. I think the injury occured on the hit not the fall & pileup. Also, the late catch by Steve was incorrectly ruled out-of bounds.

Feature Story In Switzerland about the UD Pickles

07/16/2012 Kinda amazing that 10 days later & no Reader Comments from USA on a feature about a former Flyer footballer.
Where are the players from the 2010 team?

Awaiting the start of the Swiss Bowl at noon, one might like a light-hearted story by Marcel Krebs from Sport-Heute posted this past Thursday. Marcel drove down to Chur from Zurich to interview Steve & do a photo shoot which Marcel does when he visits cities around Europe during his football travels. The story starts with the pickle business that Steve & Justin Watkins used to reduce leg cramping in hot weather. But Marcel goes on into UD football, the City of Dayton & Steve's efforts to become a starter. In the end, you can tell the writer likes the subject & I think the people like both. So we wonder what was actually said as the two walked past the outdoor tables...was that really...

Marcel does not speak English & in fact not German either - he speaks Swiss Deutsch! An interpreter was needed. And the Google translation is word by word so some meanings are lost. This time substitute for the word "she" with "they" or "them" or "their". The Ticino is where the 11 imports eat their free midday meal; according to Marcel, it must have been good!

In the pickle story, remember that Justin drank the juice, Steve ate the dill pickles. Steve mentions a lot of liesure time, unlike college. Heck, they seem to tour Europe every Monday-Thursday until late in month when money runs low. Apparently Marcel receives 5-6 inquiries weekly from USA about his editorial stories.

Finally, in the story you can pick up on the decisions faced in high school when multiple sports are played and college offers come from three directions. Other sports may have been better offers but Div.1-AA was the highest level he could go so football at UD was the final choice.

Valentino in Euro Bowl

Valentino to Play in Euro Bowl 2012

The Calanda Bronco season ends along with former Solon Comet/Dayton Flyer Steve Valentino’s football adventure in Switzerland this Saturday in the 26th Annual Euro Bowl of American Football. Along with the Austrian opponent, the Vienna Vikings; they are the two representing 1200 clubs in 30 countries who play American Football. The Broncos are the 2012 Swiss champs and won quarter & semi-final playoffs in Austria as the underdog’s claw their way to history.

The Swiss earned the right to host the game but without large enough facilities in Chur (population 33,000), they engaged the RhinePark Stadium a half-hour drive north just over the famous river in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. The only meeting ever of the two teams was last year when the Vikings beat the Broncos 19-14 in the quarter-finals. The Bronco offense is much more explosive this season and baring injury, they should score many more points. Valentino will start at slot receiver, punt returner & holder for placekicks. He sometimes lines up in the Wildcat formation and also plays QB if needed.

With luck we may be able to see it for the first time via live-streaming in 56 countries on EuroSport2 at noon Saturday, July 21st.

It's the Euro Bowl guys! Plenty of politicians & dignitaries involved including the wife of the former Swiss Ambassador to Germany who will sing the National Anthem. Shawne Fiedling is also a former Miss Texas & 3rd place finisher in Miss America!

Today - Thursday - is media day. Some of the boyz going up to the stadium for interviews. City of Chur (33,000) is filled with huge signs everywhere. Locals are actually looking for America footballers in the restaurants. Many families arriving today. Since the Calanda brewery is right there, no chance of suds shortage.

Way to go Broncos. Pretty sweet when your team wins its first title and beats the team who has won it nine times. Ya think they might party a bit tonight in Chur?

Swiss Video Highlight on You Tube

This was played at the International Sports Night 2012 in Davos, Switzerland. Not very good video, nice music & a few views of #7 catching a TD, throwing a TD pass & downfield blocking for many of #36 runs.
