A10 Tourney 2017 (General Thread Non-Flyers)

1st Round Game times are posted to Atlantic10.com (tentative)

Saturday, October 28
#1 LA SALLE vs #8 DAYTON, 1 pm
#4 DUQUESNE vs #5 GEORGE WASHINGTON, 1 pm
#2 ST LOUIS vs #7 SAINT JOSEPH'S, 7 pm Central (8pm East)

Sunday, October 29
#3 GEORGE MASON vs #6 VCU, 1pm

As I before mentioned, I am very fond of the new campus sites format for a few reasons. Whereas in the past few seasons seeds became less meaningful when they suddenly got rid of the first round bye and just threw eight teams into a mix, the new format rewards the top four teams with something even better than a bye. The opportunity to host makes the regular season matches a bit more meaningful, as evidenced by the George Mason, GW/Duquesne matches today that might otherwise have been simply snoozers/tune up games. The campus site is also good for the hosting fans with attendance, as it reduces travel for players and fans. Finally, by extending the tournament an extra weekend, we should see a better quality final rather than forcing three games in on short rest. This last effect is probably the coaches' favorite of them all. By the time Dayton and La Salle (and more recently, Duquesne one time) have gotten to the NCAA's, they've been gassed from the A10 beating up on each other. I am hoping for the A10 victor this year to get us our first NCAA chip(s) since, I think, Dayton did in 2010! (In 2006 and from 2008 to 2010, the A10 victors all appeared in the NCAA Second Round, but I do not believe any A10'ers have advanced since.)

Looking ahead to Round 2, here's a treat for anyone that goes to the semifinals trip in Richmond. The women's games are on Friday (2 semifinals) and Sunday (Championship). In between on Saturday, the VCU men's team may also be hosting a playoff match! (Seeding is still to be determined for the men's side.)

2017 Regular season results:
#1 LA SALLE vs #8 DAYTON, 4-0
#2 ST LOUIS vs #7 SAINT JOSEPH'S, 3-0
#3 GEORGE MASON vs #6 VCU, 1-0
#4 DUQUESNE vs #5 GEORGE WASHINGTON, 0-0 (that was at GW)

In STL, The #7 St Joe's takes a 1-0 lead over #2 St Louis into halftime.

In Pittsburgh, #4 Duquesne def. #5 GW, 1-0 (2OT). Those two teams battled through 8 periods of scoreless soccer before an own goal deflection squeezed in. Tough break for the Colonials, who had a great year at 10-5-4.

The Billikens are out! 3-0 winners in the regular season, but Hawks overcome them 1-0 today. I believe that is the third straight season the a 7-seed has won the opening round match (Duquesne 2015, Dayton 2016, Saint Joseph's 2017).

SLU suffers its first loss at Hermann Stadium since 10/22/15, a span of two whole regular seasons.

Another upset has VCU over George Mason, 2-1. Defender Megan Dell had two second half shots, both on goal, both went in. Friday's doubleheader will feature three Pennsylvania teams and the host VCU Rams.

1- La Salle vs 4- Duquesne, 2pm.
6- VCU vs 7- SJU, 4:30 pm.

We were treated to two wonderful games today. A seesaw battle between La Salle and Duquesne ends with La Salle on top. Yellow cards started flying in the second half but crisis averted as Larisa Zambelli stopped the Duquesne PK conversion. Then 7 minutes later Duquesne broke through the ice. Finally La Salle equalized with 1:08 to go on a score by senior defender Kath Hennessey, her first of the year. Madi Bower won it in the 97th on a shot from close range, her 10th of the season.

VCU ended St Joe's Cinderella run in a 1-0 shutout. Megan Dell converted a PK and recorded her third postseason goal (and just two for the whole regular season).

At noon on Sunday, La Salle meets VCU in the championship.

That was one of the better tournaments I remember in awhile. Low scoring, but plenty of chances by both VCU and La Salle. Host team being in the final is fun for the crowd. Only 336 were there, but it was loud, and it's probably better than pretty much any finals crowd outside of Dayton. It doesn't help that VCU's field is so far off campus, unlike Dayton and St Louis (as well as Duquesne and Fordham) which all have stadiums that are centerpieces.

Nice back heel by LaSalle to win in OT. Thats why they were top team in the league. Other squads would not possess that clever and timely DNA creativity.
