Cleveland State to add football?

Cleveland State wants to know if students would pay higher fees to support a football program.

So, CSU's Student Government Association will conduct a referendum vote April 12-14, asking students whether they would be willing to pay about $4 per credit hour more in general fees. Students currently pay $40 per credit hour -- about 40 percent of which goes toward athletics.

The vote is the next phase in a process that began in late 2008, when then-outgoing CSU President Michael Schwartz floated the idea of a Vikings football team to enhance the college experience and campus atmosphere.

If CSU fielded a team, it would be Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) nonscholarship football. CSU would seek membership in the 10-team Pioneer Football League, competing against such schools as Butler, Dayton and Drake.

The encouraging thing, in my opinion, is that someone thinks playing PFL-style football may have a degree of merit. It's been quite a while since that has happened....probably CU being the most recent.
