What We Learned from the Xavier Game

ERIE (PA) -- There was a whole lotta learnin’ going Saturday afternoon, courtesy of the ESPN2 Digital Classroom. Let’s review our notes, shall we class?

-- Despite X fans claims to the contrary, the entire country learned that the name of the school to the south actually is pronounced “Eggsavior.” If Bob Wishcusen said it on ESPN2 it must be true, no?

-- Glad to hear that the teams exchanged handshakes before the warfare began. Good sportsmanship is never out of fashion.

-- Xavier fans love to refer to the Flyer faithful as “the Cryers” and mock how we supposedly complain about the zebras after every loss. Gee, who’s cryin’ now XavierHoops and MouskieMadness?

-- After all of that ****in’ and moanin’ the “White-Out” just flat-out worked. It looked and sounded awesome on TV. My mother-in-law (who is not a hoops or UD fan at all) sat down in the living room, looked up at the TV and said “my goodness, look at that crowd.”

And the move by the Red Scare and the band to switch to red in the 2nd half was equally cool.

-- When properly motivated, this Flyer team can play with anyone. Now what BG and the Boys can and must do is this:

Come out with even more intensity vs. Charlotte on Wednesday and blow them out by an even bigger margin than they did the Mouskies.

Xavier was a must win game for the Flyboys; Charlotte will be a statement game, i.e., make no mistake: the Xavier blowout was no mistake.

-- While UD has established that they can play with anyone, it remains to be seen whether they can play with anyone, anywhere. Games @ Richmond and @ Temple will provide the answer. So will the games they play in AC.

-- So “Pride Buster” how did you spend your Saturday afternoon?

-- Loved the KH intangibles highlight reel that ESPN2 ran during the game. He is indeed “The Professional.”

-- It took the Elder Swampette 11 hours to drive from Chicago to Dayton for the Xavier game. She ended up with seats in the 300 section and sent me and Mrs. Swampy a great pic of the whiteout from her vantage point. That’s our girl.

-- According to DaytonFlyers.com, in his post-game comments Chris Mack admitted that his team got outplayed and outcoached. Who am I to argue with him?

-- It would have been nice if the announcing team could have gotten UD’s RPI correct. It is not 70. It was 38 before the game and stands at 30 afterwards, according to the UD Pride RPI.

-- How hard is it to win on the road in the Atlantic 10? You might want to ask Bobby Lootz and the now 1st place ‘49ers that question after their narrow escape from Rose Hill and the winless Rams on Saturday afternoon.

-- Dayton’s bench outscored X’s subs 37-6. That kinda says it all.

-- Dante Jackson could get in an argument at a mime convention.

-- When BG first came to UD I was one of his most vocal critics in terms of his sideline demeanor. I thought he yelled way too much and his body language was far too negative. Not anymore. Nice adjustment, coach.

-- Brad Redford may be a great three point shooter but he’s not going to supplant London Warren on the Atlantic 10 All Defense team anytime soon.

-- Paul Williams abused Red one-on-one whenever he had the chance, good for 7 points to BR’s 3. Advantage PW.

-- Maybe it’s just me, but I loved the fact that BG inserted Matt Kavanaugh into the game, even if it was only for a minute.

-- Jordan Crawford will submit his name for the NBA draft, where his screaming after every made basket in the middle a blowout will be much more appreciated.

-- I’m happy for Rob Lowery that he got to play an entire game vs. X in the Arena and even more pleased that he shot the three-ball well.

-- When you look Jason Love in the eye, which one do you follow?

-- Speaking of vision, there is this item from the “You See What You Want to See” department. On one of the X MB’s they complained about the play where KH drove for a hoop early in the game. According to them, KH dribbled the ball 3 times, stopped and then dribbled again for, what to them, should have been an obvious double call. If you watch the replay, KH lost the ball, hit it once and only then did he gain full control of it. He then gathered himself and drove past Kenny Frease for a nice deuce. Perfectly legal and one of the most popular wrong calls made in pickup basketball. You cannot double dribble (or travel) if you don’t have control of the ball.

Observe: http://www.facebook.com/video/video....9805915&ref=nf

-- If you look up the term “regressing to the mean” in the dictionary, there is a picture of Kenny Frease missing a layup next to it.

-- According to Matt Schwade over at FlyerHoops.net, the following recruits were in attendance for today’s Xavier butt-whipping:

Dionte Hawkins, Dayton Dunbar (2012)
Dwaun Anderson, Suttons Bay (MI) (2011)
LeDontae Henton, Lansing (MI) (2011)
Jarron Simmons, Alter HS (2013)
Travis Trice, Wayne HS (2011)
Ralph Hill, 2010 signee

If any of those kids are considering both UD and X, how can they possibly decide to go there after witnessing this game?

See you in Atlantic City for the rubber match, Eggs fans.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”

Terrell Holloway did NOT shake hands before the game. He turned and walked back to the bench. He and Jackson are tools.

"When you look Jason Love in the eye, which one do you follow?"

Classic! My 2-year old has a wandering eye issue, but this comment made me LOL and I hate that acronym.

And the move by the Red Scare and the band to switch to red in the 2nd half was equally cool.

For those not in the arena, the students took off their white T-shirts so they could wave them as towels as part of their towel boy half time dance. Looked impressive to see the entire student body waving T-Shirt towels.

Swamp....

1. liked that PW and Lowery had good games. good going Rob to right his ship and solid to Paul for great d and some key shots!

2. good comments in that BG has lowered his heart rate and courtside demeanor. He's settled in and is a very Fine face of the University for all of us!

3. of course espn gets our info wrong as much as they possibly can. Being the 5th rated conference is it possible to have a Research Team espn. maybe feed your announcers some reliable info....

4. could do without the eye comment as i know two peeps with lazy eyes. it's awkward for them and me at times. so we don't need to go there.

5. great going by Red Scare, the fans and the white out. We pulled it off.
Good going flyer bballers. Let's keep rolling into AC.

THIs is very likely first year i can make Atlantic City. Def. for two days, we'll see how much more i can stay for. It's gettin hot in here!

"Pride Buster" was out little friend who posted porn in the middle of a game thread. He got banninated. He subsequently promised on Blackburn Review that he had something special in store for UD Pride for the X game. We're still waiting.
