Xavier and sportsmanship
I was watching the Xmen last night with a family member who enjoys basketball but doesn't know how much I despise them. Without me saying a word, he said
"this kid 55 on Xavier is the biggest punk I've ever seen." "Whats the deal with these Xavier players cussing at the opponent after every made basket." "If I was a Xavier fan I would be embarrassed."
What kind of coach is allowing his players to cuss at the bench of a 16 seed in a tournament game? At what point do the fans of Xavier or the administration say enough is enough with this crap. Anthony Grant would permanently bench a kid if he told Mick Cronin to **** my **** during a game.
It almost seems like their intent in games is to start a fight with the other team. I've never seen a team get in more skirmishes or get more technical fouls. What inevitably will happen is they will start a brawl and get some guys suspended for the rest of their tournament run. I must admit I was hoping that somebody on Texas Southern would've taken a shot at somebody.
We get it, you're tough. But Jesus C, treat the opponents and their coach with respect while you play the game.
Chris Mack may have an outstanding record, but the image his players are projecting is absolutely the wrong one for a Catholic college with a large amount of great people in their alumni base.
Heres hoping they show their a$$ again when they lose tomorrow and then Mack and their program goes down the drain with the FBI investigation in the offseason.
In life, eventually you get what's coming to you.

Coincidentally, I was sitting at the subdivision pool reading the original post thinking it was just sour grapes when a guy with a pizza walks by and doesn't even say hello. Then I notice the X shirt and it all makes sense. They're all mean. And it hurt my feelings so much that I bought another beer, re-read the original post and still thought it was sour grapes.
Although I will admit to having some of those feelings as well.

Don't ever post _avier and sportsmanship in the same sentence. At the very least don't give them the respect of spelling the X
They won't make the Final Four, just a question of who punches them in the face.

My biggest frustration with this is, _avier wasn’t always a bunch of punk-a$$ b!+ches. Back in the days of Tyrone Hill, Brian Grant, Michael Davenport, and others of that era, I used to listen to their games on WLW, and root for them to win when they weren’t playing UD. But something about that program changed at about the time Ratface took over from Prosser. Gradually, as Matta begat Miller begat Mack, winning with class and dignity took a back seat to winning no matter the cost. And since Mack took over 9 years ago, the concept of winning at all cost seems to have “gained steam”. Too bad.

Xavier wins.
I don't care if they're being great sports or not.
Dayton needs a little bit of that attitude
Winning matters and they win more than UD does.

Yet Chris Mack claims he was ordered to throw the ball off Coffee's face and his conscience was bothered by it. His actions seem to suggest a lack of conscience.

C-time, I agree that Dayton needs a little bit of that attitude. I just don’t think we need anywhere near all of that attitude. Great players have always carried a little bit of that attitude. Jordan, Bird, Magic. More recently Curry & Duncan. But you don’t need to be a complete asshat, and that’s where players like Macura, Reynolds, Lyons, etc. have crossed the line. And, of course, Mack as Head Douchebag.

People think I'm crazy when I say I used to root for them when they didn't play UD.. Prosser and Gillen had class, and the fans seemed to follow suit. But then came Thad, and I completely despise them. The players took on the coach's attitude and it's been crap since. I remember David West getting called for an obvious charge and he stomped his feet and flailed his arms crying all the way back down the court. What a horrible display. If I were his coach I would have pulled him and told him this is a man's sport and he can't go back in until he becomes one.

I was trying to leave him out of the equation because of his connections to a certain former UD coach. But yeah, I think the Gangstas both came to X when he was HC (though they didn’t reach full-blown a-hole status until Chri Smack took over).

Chris Mack botched the last minute of that game badly, but I'm sure it won't stop him from getting a raise and moving to Louisville.

I don't like the trash talking and the like as much as anyone, but what really fires my dislike is what I consider dirty play.
Once early in the game and once or twice in the 2nd half I watched Trevon Bluiett hook FSU players with his arm, spin around, and look at the official as if he was being held. On the play early in the game, he did it to PSU's center who got whistled for a foul. Thanks to the power of DVR, I was able to rewind and point out the move to MrsFF.
Those types of actions are not perpetrated by players who are taught to play the game the right way. I understand that flopping and the high powered rifle head snap are part of the game, but intentionally grabbing and hooking an opponent and then playing the victim is bush league.

One of the announcers said that Mack was really giving it to the officials at the end of the game. Anybody see his press conference? Cronin was whining in his that his players were getting fouled at the rim and they weren't being called, which threw his team off. I'm sure a few fouls were the reason for blowing a 22 point second half lead.

After blowing a 22-point lead in the same gym with thousands of _avier fans, I bet the UC Nation was hating life as the last few seconds ticked away and they had to listen to the taunts and jeers of those dressed in blue.
But I bet they loved giving it back a couple hours later.

Speaking of Thugery
Did everyone notice that at the end on the FSU inbound where X deliberately fouled, instead of a simple obvious intentional foul, the X player had the knock the guy to the floor? A real sport. The FSU player got up and shrugged off some obvious discomfort. Typical thugery.

I don't think the dude from X was trying to hurt the kid from FSU, just trying to make a desperation play on a steal attempt. He came over and apologized/asked if he was alright and the dude from FSU gave him a nod that indicated "we're good". I think that is a case of making something out of nothing.

The FSU player flopped...he - and anyone else with a brain - was hoping to draw in intentional foul. Refs anticipate this and made the right call.

Sweet sweet Karma. Watching the X Texas Southern game on Friday, and in typical X fashion they are all smack talking the whole game. Anytime there was a stoppage in play the X players would go out of their way to hard bump the TS players going back to their bench. Just completely uncalled for BS and poor sportsmanship. They are the 1 seed playing a completely out manned 16 seed and they resort to this thuggery. It is who they are and exactly why I can't stand them anymore. Used to respect them and watch them but over the past 8 to 10 years they represent all of the worse habits of poor sportsmanship. Karma is a b**** and they just got theirs.

Mack acts likes that towards officials literally every game they lose. I honestly do not think I've watched the end of a xavier loss and not seen Mack try and go after the officials at the end of the game, or have to be held back by his assistants. It's hard to fathom how nobody in the media calls him out on it.

At this very moment, Bill Cunningham and Ken Broo are having a field day with the UC and _avier losses. If you're bored or looking for high entertainment value, put the radio on 700WLW.

This is accurate, however, I personally talked with Jim Crews about the incident just a few years ago. His comment, "Yeah, not MY best moment."

If you talk a little to the opponent...it happens...when 5 from X hits a shot then talks sh!t to the oppositions bench and HC you are just a POS. Even during the timeout, the opposing coach looked at the ref like "are you going to let him do that"?
A little jawing between players on the floor will happen and sometimes has to happen...but to talk sh!t to the guy holding a clipboard for his campus job is ridiculous.

And, if you are #5's head coach, and you do nothing to discourage it, then you are by default encouraging it, and thus a POS as well.

I have a standing bet with an X grad. $25 for the team that first makes the final four. He was sweating a few years ago and I thought I might be sweating this year. Last night made up for the lost season.
The only thing that didn't happen that I had hoped was a complete implosion by their bench with AT LEAST one technical foul at the end when they realized they were going to lose. I really wanted the entire country to see what complete a$$hats they are. For that, I'm disappointed.

As much as I have heard/read about Mack and Jim Crew and the episode, where one or the other stated that they were sorry IT happened , I look at how rat-avior plays and their HC reacts many times since and think ......
actions speak loUDer than words ......
Good Lord you would think the Jesuits would be embarrassed ... evidently not
AT least from what I read about the St Pat's day deal with UD students, the UD prez came out right a-way to say he was embarrassed and he ain't even part of a religious order!

Let me start by saying in no way am I comparing UD and XU or DD and any jackwagon on XU, BUT isn't this throwing stones a little bit? Did anyone see how many time DD hit shots in front of the opposing bench this year and turned and talked **** to them??? Be careful we live in a glass house...

I not once witnessed fingerpointing towards an opponents bench by any UD player. I am within earshot of the floor and never heard any player talk **** to the opponent bench.
Big difference with a dumb celebration (instead of just getting back on defense) and flat out running your mouth after every play...even plays that you aren't even involved in.
I hate the extra curriculars by all...but to even remotely put UD on the same "glass house" page in terms of conduct on the floor in comparison to X is way off base.

I said I was not comparing the two but there were many occasions this year when DD talked **** to the opposing bench after making a three in front of them. It was even mentioned numerous times by announcers during TV games.

A bozzo announcer or color commentator's remarks have credibility????? um .... I think not! All they do is fill air time with buzz words and biased one sided opinions of what they think should happen..... I would put their comments one step below reading it on the internet.....

OK then don't take the announcers word for it take mine, I witnessed it many times. He talked smack, many UD players do believe it or not. I am not putting him in the same class as Mecura or any other jack wagon from XU, I'm simply pointing out that DD talked **** to the opposing bench like one of the above comments said #5 for XU did. You are naive and live in a blue and red colored world if you don't believe DD talked **** this year.

I blame the officials and NCAA for the amount of trash talking and other antics on display. It has definitely gotten worse over the past 10 years or so. In addition to all the trash talking, the whole screaming during/after a dunk, kids putting their faces into the sideline camera, flexing their muscles, etc is total BS. If you ask me, it all should stop and play the **** game. NCAA basketball is becoming Monday night WWE Raw and that is not a good thing. NCAA should crack down on it all!

I don't believe it's as bad as you portray, but I am going to take further notice during this week's games. What's been lost is the "art of trash talk" and/or showmanship that used to be a "cool" part of the game and could have some sub-plot to games, matchups and rivalries. There's a time, place and manner where it can add something.
Personally, I haven't gotten the perception that it's THAT bad, certainly not as bad as I witness in the NFL, where every catch and every first down or QB sack is like he just made a game winning play.

My understanding is that there was no greater trash talker than Larry Bird back in his day. Yet, I don't recall Bird doing the crap kids do today. My concern is that it is trending toward the NFL...
