Meeting Moville

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- One of the benefits of being a hack blogger like me is that you occasionally get to meet the people who take the time to read the drek that you produce. I’ve had breakfast with Bob McHale in Stone Harbor, NJ for the past several years while on vacation and have had the chance to chat with UD Pride MB posters like Figgie, Whacker, Mr. and Mrs. Flyer Fanatic and The Fly among others before or after games. Recently, I have gotten into the habit of stopping by John R’s section to say hello when I’m in the Arena.

I was in Washington, DC earlier this week for a trade show and that provided me the opportunity to meet the guy we all know here as Moville. If you frequent FlyerHoops.net, his handle over there is Carl’s Tavern. His real name is Joe Sutherland (Class of ’71) and what’s interesting is that I really didn’t know Joe at UD; I knew his wife Ann (DeStefano) Sutherland (Class of ’73) as she was in some of my Comm Arts classes and worked at WVUD with my roommate Steve Downes. Joe likes to tell the story that when he first transferred to UD from a JC in upstate NY he went to an open scrimmage in the Fieldhouse to watch the Flyers work out. In the crowd of folks in the stands observing the scrimmage there was a student talking about the various players, the strength of the newcomers, etc. That guy, Joe insists, was me. For the record, Joe, I was probably just repeating what I had read in Street and Smith’s, then the bible of college basketball yearbooks. I still have 25 years worth of them in the basement.

Any time three old alums like us get together you have to play “the name game.” We all had George Biersack stories. George was the head of the Comm Arts Department and GM of WVUD. Joe’s favorite Biersack-ism was this one:

“You have to have the proper att-tee-tude.”

I recall that George pronounced my native state “Massatwosh*ts” and I was never quite sure if he did that on purpose or not. Other ‘VUD names we kicked around were folks like Pete Acquaviva, Geoff Vargo, Chris Cage, Steve Wendell, Phil Eckert and his ex-wife Peg Piatt, Steve Downes and Ann’s gal pal Sue Queeney.

Joe’s all-time favorite UD hoops-related story concerns the 1974 UD/Notre Dame game. Joe was working the night shift at a small newspaper in upstate New York. His job was basically to keep his eye on the wire services in case anything major happened. Joe spent the evening following updates on the ticker-tape with none other than Digger Phelp’s father, who Joe said was a prince of a guy. Joe asked me if I remembered that game. Yes I do, because I was there.

It was a great time shooting the breeze with Ann and Joe and the two hours we had together flew by. Good to see you two!

Time now to hit the links:

-- After LaDontae Henton signed his LOI with BG, Lansing Eastern HS added a link to the UD Hoops website to their links page. How long do you think it will be before they switch it the Providence URL?

-- 2012 UD recruiting target DeJuan Marrero is a little cheesed that he didn’t make the Scout Top 100, according to the Indy Star:

-- Former Flyer and Wittenberg player David Bradds, the son of OSU great Gary Bradds, has a son named Evan who is a pretty decent player in his own right:

-- Usually, a knee to the cujones is a painful thing for a guy to endure. In this young hoopster’s case, it saved his life:

-- Archie Miller might want to check out the new kid on the block in AAU circles, The Ohio Hoopsters:

-- Fellow New Englander Jeff Goodman has departed FoxSports.com for CBS Sportsline:

-- If you take the time to read the details of the assault charges against former Wake Forest player Tony Woods, it sounds like the punishment doesn’t quite fit the crime:

-- Seth Davis of CNNSI.com recently partook of the NCAA “Enforcement Experience.” The name makes it sound like a ride at Six Flags, doesn’t it?

-- I have always maintained that Pittsburgh people are some of the nicest folks you will ever want to meet. If you are wandering around the Golden Triangle and ask for directions, most Pittsburghers will not only tell you how to get to your destination, they will escort you there!

I guess I am not the only one who feels this way:

-- I don’t know what’s scarier in this article -- the prospect of trying to eat the “heart attack sandwich” or the lady holding it:

-- While he may strike many fans of opposing teams as a total yahoo, Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon is a pretty decent dude:
