LaSalle Game
Both La Salle and Dayton have six shutouts a piece. should be a good game.

Historically UD is inept on Fieldturf. Its our kryptonite. If we can get a tie out of this, it will feel like a big win.

Not much better in the second half - 4-0 LaSalle final.
Just going from the stats - We got our rear ends handed to us. Took us nearly 60 minutes just to get off our first shot - and it was not on goal. LaSalle scored on 4 of 6 shots on goal, Johns only had 2 saves. We did not have a single corner all night. Kiehl had a single shot. Kellett did not play -because of the red card from the last game I am sure.

Just exiting the stadium now. Flyers were in our home whites but did not look at all comfortable. Looks like there might not be enough gas in the tank to get halfway home. 4-0 blown out by La Salle. And it was really looking like number 5 coming down the field as time was expiring if the referee didn't mercy kill us as their transfer striker picked up a questionable offside call in the 90th. John's, I love her and it was not her fault. But she was a non factor in this one. She'll have to give up her defensive of the week belt and maybe Zambelli can try it on. Meanwhile, La Salle runs its decade of dominance up to 5-1-2 against the Flyers, if you're still keeping track!

Johns was anemic tonight with her goal kicks. Had been praising her for some really quality kicks past midfield, no s I tonight barely lucky to 3/4 way to mid field. Agree they did not look comfortable out there. Start of 2nd half looked promising for two or three minutes and that was that. Lots of work to do.

We have played 4 teams in the RPI Top-100 this year: ECU, Purdue, Kent State, and LaSalle. We've scored 2 total goals against those teams. I would classify anybody outside the Top-100 as normal Dayton "W" in most years. So Top-100 is most teams with some honest talent. We've been outscored 10-2 by them and just two goals in well over 360 minutes. In other words, we cannot score against anybody with an honest defense. And both goals we did score were vs ECU in the season opener, so we havent scored against anybody in the RPI Top-100 in almost a dozen games.
Kiehl with one shot. You cannot possibly compete against halfway decent teams when your best player never has the ball. Unfortunately 2017 is not 2016. O'Malley and Leedom are not out there feeding her quality weighted service behind defenders to run onto. Her service has been terrible all year. Nobody can play to her feet or her strengths. Our best player and a Hermann Watch list candidate is basically beached on an island nobody can find.
Half the season is over. Empirical evidence is clear: we do not have the distributors to exploit her strength as a goal-scoring forward. I see no option left but to move her to the MF and get her more touches on the ball. Her scoring is already way down this year so we won't miss much in the scoring department. She might even score more however with more touches. But shes the best passer on the team and can make space against a defender with footwork. She could lead the team or even A10 in assists if she has teammates that can finish her passes.
Until she gets more involved in the run of play, nothing changes. You can either bring the soccer ball to her, or bring her to the soccer ball. Option one has been tried and it has repeatedly failed. So that leaves no other option but to move her to a spot on the field where she can get more touches. Besides what do we have to lose anyway? We're already scoring-deprived against the best teams on the schedule with three shutouts in four matches. It cant get much worse. We need to put ourselves in a spot by season end to have a chance to win 3 games in 4 days in the A10 Tourney. To do that, the offense as it stands now has no chance of doing that. The defense is further along -- despite tonight's outcome.
By mid-season, you largely are what you are (last year's crazy A10 run aside). I see low risk, high reward by moving Kiehl to attacking mid. If it fails, we're no worse off than we are now. But I cant see that it would. Our MF distribution and overall play has been the weakest area of the field since day 1 by a standing mile. We'd be putting our best player into our weakest area.
What we know is her up top as a lawn ornament is not serving her skills well for this team. We are helping opponents by doing that. Perhaps not fair to Kiehl, but I think she just wants to be more involved no matter how it comes about.
2016 was a different team w/different players. The service was there. This year its not. Marking her out of the game is just too easy right now because we're making it too easy for the other team. Best players make teammates around them better. Hard to do when you rarely have the rock though.
Im not a coach but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently.

By the way I havent looked, but I would not be surprised if tonight's 4-0 defeat is the worst beating we've ever taken in a regular season A10 match.

Good memory.
A quick look at the on-line archives back to the 2004 season shows our worst ever A-10 losses (regular season or A-10 tournament) were by 2 goals. Tonight's loss was twice as bad as any previous A-10 loss since 2004 - and most likely the worst A-10 loss ever. Kind of puts things into perspective. Can't see any downside to moving some of the chess pieces around.
Update - Found some older season records. In our whole A-10 history - back to 1995 - we never lost a conference match by more than 2 goals. Obviously, we broke new ground against La Salle.
