2018 A-10 Week 2
Dayton hosted the Dayton Invitational and played just about as good as they could have with a young team. The Flyers got 3 wins. They were challenged, but never pushed to the 5th set. The Flyers used a couple of comebacks to beat Ball State and South Alabama. Ball State and S. Alabama picked to finish 2nd in their 6 team divisions and both receiving some first place votes. Both wins should look good at the end of the season. Dayton tries to pick up some great wins this weekend. Host Kentucky is coming off a tough 0-3 start but still nationally ranked. Dayton also plays Kansas and College of Charleston. Dayton vs. Kansas is the first A-10 match of the weekend starting at 10:00 AM, then the Flyers get a long break before playing the UK Wildcats at 8:00 PM.
Davidson also hosted matches the first week and got off to a hot start. They play at Appalachian State against the host App State, Mississippi State, and Clemson. The Davidson vs. App. State is rematch from early 2017 where Davidson beat the Mountaineers. The App. State Mountaineers are picked 3rd in the Sun Belt east, right behind South Alabama. Clemson looks like they could be the toughest. This group should be competitive. Davidson has a chance to extend their winning streak, but it won't be easy. One win would be good, two would be great. Mississippi St. was bad the first week. DAV could get a W against the SEC.
VCU looks for their first win, but difficult matches continue (@ Seton Hall, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh) VCU won a very entertaining match against Seton at the 2017 VCU Invitational. No reason to believe this won't be another good one, but the Pirates lost to Buffalo in week 1. VCU might be favored on the road. Oklahoma is 3-0, but against ( xavier, NIU, and Depaul) I think VCU can get 2 wins.
Fordham and Duquesne are at home during the 2nd weekend and all 6 of those matches will be on ESPN+. SLU is also home, but currently only their match vs. Western Kentucky is shown on ESPN+. That is probably for the best. SLU's other matches are against Kansas State and Marquette. Fordham's matches provide great early comparisons since they play both Marist and Charlotte, teams Davidson has already beaten. Fordham also hosts Bryant out of the NEC conference. Duquesne plays Bowling Green/UNLV/Youngstown State. The UNLV match is worth checking in on simply because UNLV will play Fordham in week 3.
GW and La Salle both travel west. The Explorers venture into Central Michigan and the Colonials visit Bradley in Peoria, IL. GW has the best chance for a win when they face the Western Illinois Leathernecks (2017 RPI - 291). La Salle gets their shot against the worst of the Big East when they play DePaul (picked to finish 10th) on Saturday at 2:30 PM.
GM and Rhode Island stay close to home for some proximity rivalry matches. GM to Georgetown and Rhode Island to Holy Cross. George Mason plays their first of two matches against Norfolk State out of the MEAC.

Kansas is winnable if we stay focused. They will go after Liz in serve receive. I believe she can handle it with support from the team.
I’m expecting a win over College of Charleston.
Biggest match will be #16 Kentucky who dropped 11 spots in the poll after going 0-3. I’m sure they are mad as hexx. They are at home. Dayton’s Match is prime time on Friday night. It’s the only match charging admission, so they expect it to be the hot contest. They set it up so we play the two toughest matches the same day, but there is a long break between matches. Hopefully we can handle Kansas without showing everything and them unload on KY.
We go 3-0 this weekend we will be ranked. We go 2-1 this weekend we receive votes and might be ranked. Time to step up and keep getting better. Go Flyers.

Charleston is no joke either. They were like 26-7 last year and got an NCAA at-large bid.

Dayton vs. Kansas is 40 minutes in. Kansas won the first set and is up 16-15 in the 2nd. This has been very back and forth. No big leads. The teams seem evenly matched. Bruns scored a lot for the Flyers in the 1st. Papesh, Westbeld, & Weaver have contributed in the 2nd. Flyers are passing the ball around now and keeping it close.

Flyers up 22-18 in the 2nd. Flyers scored 5 in a row (Bruns x2, Brown, Moore, and Bruns/Morre block) to force a Kansas timeout.

Bruns finishes set 2. Flyers tie the match at 1-1 but it was close. (25-23) This is shaping up like a good one.

Cannot squander these opportunities especially up 2-1 vs at-large caliber teams. The A10 isnt good enough to make up for it. Not sure what it is, but we have taken a beating on 5 set matches in recent years vs our best opponents. Dont even bring up Kentucky and Ohio State. Still trying to forget those. Sooner or later we need to shut the door.

I agree Chris but will give a team with 3-4 freshmen in the rotation a break on this one. Kansas won a 5 set match last weekend with a lot of experienced players on the court. We hadn’t played any yet this year. I felt we lost this one in the 4th with too many errors. Hard to tell with no video how the leadership on the court was when it came down to critical points without video. But I like there is very little time to ponder the missed opportunity. Time to learn from it and come out against #16 KY and play for an upset. Just keep getting better every match.

Yep I understand we're playing frosh, but at some point we have to just get er' done. Everybody plays frosh, everybody has injuries. For whatever reason the last 6-7 years we've had a heck of a time winning these 5 setters against higher competition. The first Horsmon era and part of Sheff, we seemed to salivate at these chances and came up huge time and again with late-match heroics to pull these kinds of results out of the woodwork. It almost became customary. Somehow we need to get back to that. When the NCAA hands out at-large bids, how many frosh we played and how many players "unavailable" we have probably wont amount to squat.
Not pessimistic. I love our general direction. But we gotta rise up and finish the job on some of these matchups too. These are the teams we measure ourselves against.

Looks like UK blew us off the court. This wasn't a "five setter", A real wake up call.

One other thing that is standing out to me this weekend vs last is we seem to be committing a lot of ball handling errors. It could be the different ref crews are calling something last week’s wasn’t??? Hard to tell without seeing video of all the matches. I don’t remember any from last week - and I’m sure there were a couple. Didn’t stop to check stats. But we are getting a lot called this week.

The saga continues UD wins first set 25 21 then goes into its familiar mo dropping set two 25 13.
Let's see if they correct it for sets 3 and 4. Almost seems as we are predictable on offense and defense. Bigger learning curve than expected.

Flyers take third set 27-25 - after being down 16-22. Perhaps showing some toughness. Let's see how fourth set goes.

What ever the issue was got corrected late in set 3 carrying over into set 4 winning 25 15.
Salvaged the weekend. Two solid matches and one head scratcher. Lots of material for Tim to work with.

La Salle upset Depaul last weekend for their second win. We should have beat KS, but even if we had, the LaSalle win was probably the biggest win last week and great for their program. VCU’s win over OK was also big, especially considering it’s their only win so far this year. They are 1-5 but have a figgiestats rpi of 126 behind our 112 with a record of 4-2.

Becky, thanks for providing the La Salle update. La Salle did beat DePaul. That was La Salle's first win against a Big East team as far as we know. (La Salle's record only go back to 2006) La Salle lost their last 15 against the Big East. (9x vs. Villanova/ 2x vs. St. Johns/ 2x vs. Providence/once vs. Georgetown/ and once vs. Rutgers) Yes. In 2008 Rutgers was still in the Big East. In La Salle's defense, only one of those matches was at home. But they didn't need home court against DePaul.
Elsewhere, Fordham beat Bryant, Duquesne beat Bowling Green, George Mason beat Penn and Norfolk State, Rhode Island beat Holy Cross and Columbia, GW beat Toledo and Western Illinois, and Davidson beat Mississippi State.
Fordham is playing without Olivia Fairchild. (2017 A-10 2nd Team and 2016 Rookie of the Year). It looks like she is injured with a sling on her left arm. I'm no expert, but she could be out all year. Fordham is using Freshman MH Joey Landeros to fill the gap. Other Freshman like Claire O'Neil (OH) and Makaela Tanaka (S) are also playing regular minutes. They are a little inexperienced now, but this could help them in the near and long term future. I'm sure first year head coach Ian Choi wasn't expecting to need to replace Olivia Fairchild early in the season.

Fairchild is a huge lost. The bright spot in the conference might be Davidson and LaSalle if they continue to get better.
