BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Don’t know what to say.

Don’t know what to do.

Words just do not explain the total shock and disbelief.

But then again, we are not intended to understand it at all, are we? As Alfred Lord Tennyson put it:

Ours is not to question why

Ours is but to do or die

Steve McElvene is dead at 20 and Flyer Nation is left shaking our collective heads…again…just as we did 20 years ago with the death of Chris Daniels.

If you have not seen it already you must read Tom Archdeacon’s excellent piece from The Dayton Daily News on Steve’s passing:

http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/new...t-she-c/nrP3d/

The DDN has been providing comprehensive coverage on Steve’s death. You will find an index of it here:

http://www.daytondailynews.com/list/...mcelvene/mNDt/

And if you have not done so already and are able to do so, please give what you can to the GoFundMe campaign for Steve’s family:

Perhaps the best summary of the situation came from UD Pride founder Chris Rieman on his Twitter feed:

Steve said No

God said Yes

The day after he passed, the college hoops recruiting website VerbalCommits.com listed Steve on the UD roster as follows:

Steve McElvene (RS)
(LT)

As in “Left Team.”

Because Verbal Commits didn’t have an abbreviation for “Died way too young of an enlarged heart.”

The best metaphor that I can provide is that if the world were given the choice that we could have Steve McElvene in our lives but it would only be for 20 years, would we still take it?

Of course we would.

And you know what? If Steve himself were given that choice and you asked him when it was over:

“Would you do anything differently?”

I bet his answer would be “No.”

And that is the measure of a (short) life, well lived.

Here is a link to the video played at Steve's viewing:

#5 will always be young.

He will always be smiling.

He will always be a Flyer.

RIP Steve.

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
