Smile MSOC: Flyers Disarm Minutemen 4-1

Maik Schoonderwoerd tallied a hat trick to give the Flyers a big halftime cushion, helping UD knock off UMass 4-1 Friday evening in a driving rainstorm at Baujan Field. Dayton improves to 9-4-2 (4-0-1) and remains in first place in the A10 standings, while UMass falls to 4-11-1 (3-2-1).

It didn't take long for Schoonderwoerd or the Flyers to get out in front of the Minutemen (and difficult weather conditions), taking the lead in the second minute of play after Michael Fraska placed a free kick in the box that Schoonderwoerd deflected to the far post to give UD the early 1-0 advantage.

The Flyers overcame the slippery field conditions and a skipping ball to control most of the possession over the next 10 minutes. Quicker to 50/50 challenges and exceedingly good on long-ball service to the weak side of the field, UD stretched UMass wide and thin in the attack. The Minutemen had trouble keeping the Flyers in front of their defense, eventually surrendering a second goal in the 13th minute on a beautiful far-post cross from Amass Amankona that Schoonderwoerd polished off with a tucked header under the crossbar to give UD the 2-0 lead.

With the brace in his back pocket, Schoonderwoerd continued to be opportunistic with his touches as the first half continued, helped in part by James Haupt, Amankona, Fraska, and a solid UD back line that controlled tempo and kept UMass chasing the ball.

UD earned a handful of corner kicks and had additional chances with balls in the box and slotted passes into attacking players running forward into free space, but the final touch of the ball kept the scoreboard frozen. That is until Schoonderwoerd earned the hat trick in the 29th minute after flicking a Fraska through-ball under the UMass goalkeeper from six yards out to make the score 3-0. With UMass in a world of trouble, the flint in their muskets -- whatever was left of it -- failed to spark over the last 15 minutes of the first half.

Dayton out-shot UMass 15-7 in the first 45 minutes, including a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

With the rain stopped by the second half kickoff, UMass -- to their credit -- picked up their effort and did much better both offensively and defensively. Quicker in their work rate and able to string more passes together, additional possession allowed UMass to get forward for a few half-chances near the Flyer goal box over the first 10-15 minutes of the second half.

UD let off the gas after intermission, and some of that was understandable considering the score. Still, UMass kept Dayton honest for longer stretches and were far more organized in the middle third of the field. Amankona's free space was more compact around the center circle, with tighter UMass marking elsewhere as well.

The Flyers remained the better overall side however and as the second half continued, they once again took control of the run of play and created several more excellent chances to extend the lead.

Ironically, UMass cashed in first with a bazooka shot from 30yds out that found the upper 90 of the far left post to cut the UD lead to 3-1 in the 66th minute. While Dayton gave up possession in the middle leading to the ball strike, the strike itself was high-class and GK Justin Saliba had no chance at the save.

Anthony Keene got the goal back in the 74th minute with a one-time volley from 6yds out after James Haupt found him lurking inside the box. Up 4-1 with around 15 minutes to play, it was time to milk the clock and get off the field without any injuries.

Shots were 5 a piece in the second half, reflecting the more competitive nature of the second frame, but UD won the corner kick battle 5-2 for a match result of 10-5 from the flags. Of Dayton's seven shots on goal, four found the back of the net.

Dayton continues to do what's needed to stay on top of the A10 standings. The offense keeps scoring and the defense has gotten stingier as the season moves forward. With 36 goals, UD now leads the nation in scoring. Head Coach Dennis Currier's squad clearly controls their own destiny in the A10 as the race to secure the regular season title and #1 overall seed in the postseason conference tourney remains up for grabs. And that's where UD probably needs to punch their NCAA ticket. With the A10's RPI ranked as one of the five weakest leagues in Division-I this year, the chances of UD getting an at-large bid are slim, especially with a team RPI of #63. The remainder of the schedule should be used as a springboard for the league tourney.

UD hosts SJU on Wednesday -- a make-up date after the Hawks failed to show for a previously-scheduled game because to travel issues.
