Slu game 2 thread

My concern for tonight's game I s more about SGA than Jenna. SGA took a hard hit to chest. Hope she not too sore to play hard against Steponovic. We will need all available bodies tonight....even Maddy and Andi.

Go Flyers be interesting to see which team made the better adjustments since last meeting

Dayton leads at halftime 34-32 even though they missed 9 shots in a row, half of them under the basket. Make those bunnies and its a wide open game.

Lauren came to play as did all the flyers. LC is feeling it, Kelley from the perimeter and mid range jumper.

turn overs UD settled down a bit with only two that quarter, and 7 for the ist half. SLU with 6.

Stiponovich leads SLU with 12, Lauren leads UD with 11.

SLU leads points in paint 14 -6 but we missed a half dozen close shots.

34-32 Flyers at the half. Glad to see Jenna back. Glad to see Lauren hit 3/4 from three. 25 rebounds vs 18, but there must have been about six just from Saicha grabbing her own missed layups. Shots were under a lot of pressure, yes, but I bet she is getting razzed for padding her rebound stats...

Fun game to watch.

It was expected to be a battle and it was in every sense of the word. Everyone on each team gave it their all. Fourth quarter you could see both teams were running out of gas.

Just a great all around effort.

Hard to believe we won the game without making a basket in the fourth quarter (just two foul shots made), but I'll take it.

Well deserved victory, the way you want your seniors to go out. Not a bad crowd for a week night. Too bad they do senior recognition at the end. They lost at least 2/3 of the crowd. Didn't help that they never announced it during the game, and it took about 8-10 minutes to get it started after the buzzer.
For those who watched online or TV, how did Andrea do as a commentator? I don't think she has ever done it before.

Man, what a rock-em, sock-em game! Extremely physical (refs made sure of that) and both teams very tough. Pretty evident early on that whoever won would be the team that just outlasted the other.

On another note, this had to be the worst ref crew I've seen in quite a while. I certainly don't know all the rules, but I'm pretty sure when you grab a shooter's upper arm or trip her on the way up, that's a foul. Lucky no one got hurt.

Way to gut it out, Flyers!

They were bad but they were bad both ways.

It was pretty cool to see Macioce end the game with a block. It was a nice exclamation to a big win.

Austria ends the regular season by moving into 19th place career scoring at 1135. Needs 59 to catch Amber Deane (1194) for 18th.

They announced the senior recognition would be post-game in the pre-game.

Big win. Never seen more point-blank missed layups in a college basketball game in my life. My count was 23 which is 23 of 47 missed shots. We also missed 14FTs. We could have honestly won this game by 27-30pts and that's not with any freaky things happening. Just making some layups and FTs -- not even all of them.

Things were not looking good when SLU banked a trey with 12 seconds left and we cough the ball up with 8 ticks left. Thought theyd win the game right there.

Will someone explain to me why we dont hold for the last shot in every qtr if we have the ball and the shot clock is off. We took an early shot again, missed, fouled, and surrendered two points on the other end which were nothing but gifts. Why give the opposing team an offensive possession they didnt earn? You can control this.

Ugliest big win -- maybe ever. Game execution was the Hindenburg, but somehow they made just enough plays. Kelley's trey early in OT to give us a 5pt lead really put us in the driver's seat.

Excellent she has a place in media if she wants to pursue that career path. Had heard couple years ago she has interest in being a coach.

Of course it helps when you know the players but I thought she was spot on. Not nervous at all.

There seems to be a mentality that regardless of the score, regardless of the time left on the clock take your shot if it opens. Then defend which is what our coaches believe is our strength.

Regarding Jenna's drive thought she was clearly fouled. Lots of challenged foul calls by both players and coaches, not a good crew.

That had to be one of the most excruciating painful wins I have ever witnessed at the arena in nearly 50 years. I have seen lots of heartbreaking losses in that time, but few wins coming with so much pain. And playing for a conference title.

I could go on and on -

The missed layups (maybe 20?)
The missed free throws (22-36) - Yikes
The failure to hold for the last shot of a quarter
Shauna trying a half court trap and then a full court trap each for one possession in the first half - both failed miserably. Why even try them?
29.9% overall shooting - abysmal
18 turnovers - some just brain farts
2 free throws by Wilmoth - our entire offense in the 4th quarter
We kill them on the boards but they get more second chance points (13-7)

How the heck did we win? Defense. Our inside length caused them major problems. The Saint Louis shooting was just as bad as ours. We defended the 3 point line fairly well. We boarded well - especially late. Layfield got some monster offensive boards. Austria hit a huge trey early in OT.

But good golly ladies - make some bunnies and some freebies please.

A-10 champs and #1 seed. Congrats ladies.

As much as Harris was bringing to the table she was leaving as much behind. Finally in OT Shauna had to take her out. Christy made a monster block at games end.

For Harris was her plus side greater than he negative side. If she could hit the freebies and put the darn ball in the hoop she'd be one heck of a player

On to the tourney. Bring it ladies. Go flyers

Pretty good chance they will play slu.in the semis snd he in the finals I think they could run the table with a day off between games. But, with the depth right now thst will be an amazing accomplishment

Glad to hear that jenna hasn't missed a beat , maybe the time off will be good for her

Couple things - on my radio post game Layfield said the referees were bull (blank) I love her candor! Wow she was all over the floor and on the floor for much of the game. Sitting next to her before the game and chatting with her Andrea didn't seem nervous. Said her Dad taped it but doubts she'll watch it. Says she hasn't even watched the WNBA game in which she scored 21. Said she saw enough "Game tape" at UD. I didn't have Kelley on my first team all A-10 but I may have to rethink that - it's much more than PPG. the wildcard in the tourney I think is Duquesne - they can knock off GW in the other bracket.

Refs let them play. They were fair both ways.

We have a ways to go in end of quarter and end of game coaching. Taking early shots at the end of a quarter, when you have the lead is silly, even layups for this team. Why did Harris not kick the ball out when she rebounded with 22 seconds? Get the ball to the foul shooters. Better yet, why was she in the game on that offensive possession? Should have been Lauren. Greene figured that out in the overtime.

Good night do we practice layups? Elementary school misses time after time.

Interesting Hoover said that she had no desire to coach college, because of recruiting travel. She would coach HS.

I'm reading lots and lots of complaints about missed layups - next year without Grant-Allen there may not be as many offensive rebound opportunities so then the complaints will be "Why don't we rebound better?" The team just won an A-10 Championship - enjoy it!

Why so critical of next year, we may be even better? But back on topic, the game last night.

Grant missed 9 shots, and at least 3 were outside shots. That leaves 17 layups not missed by Grant. A half dozen were uncontested. That is disturbing.

Ya know Barney beginning to really wonder about you, seem satisfied when Lauren was not the player she was expected to be, now you seem satisfied with all the missed layups, put backs etc. We only score 2 points in the 4th quarter and all you can say or care about is "we just won the A-10 regular championship, actually we tied.

We could have easily lost that game with that 4th quarter performance. I can bet you the coaches and players were not happy with their performance and they are not coddling it saying well we won the championship. The coaches and players are taking a day off then its back to the grind to see what they can learn from the poor performance.

While you accept the end result many including coaches and players are concerned with the A-10 tourney just around the corner as well as the NCAA on the line. A quote I am often reminded of "its how you played the game" and it was anything but a thing of beauty. Lots of reasons to be concerned.

Question what you want - I don't feel like dwelling on missed layups today and by the way a great first half for Lauren. I just had to bring that one up.

I think all of us on this board are enjoying the team winning an a10 regular season title. They have exceeded expectations that existed after the early season problems. They fight hard on defense and get quite a few quality looks inside. I was surprised after watching harris in person, she can get quality shots on almost every attempt

But, they miss a ton of shots inside of 5' and many of these are layups. If they could make 50% of the 5' and less shots this team is instantly 10 points better which means they are the class of the A10. If they could make 70% they are a good team. It is very possible that they are being fouled in the body to knock off their balance which we can't see.

Just because we think the number of missed layups is strange doesn't mean we don't appreciate what they have accomplished.

Maybe they have been saving them up for the A10 tournament

Guess you failed to see where I complemented Lauren in an earlier post. Your insistence to keep bringing up LC in the manner you do only confirms my post regarding said player. And oh by the way its a 40 minute game not 20, so its what a player does the whole 40 minutes.

In that regard no one not even LC played well in the second half. As ugly as the 4th quarter was I truly believe it was fatigue that had both teams gasping for air. Kelley uncharacteristically missed (air balled) two shots in the 4th. When she is off it at least hits the rim, in this case it never got to the rim, just a sign of how fatigue she and the others were, which is most likely why we couldn't put the ball in the hoop on layups.

Talking with one of my SLU friends he found it hilarious our comments about how bad we played, and like he said, and you think we played any better.

Doubt we advance if we don't correct those missed opportunities in the post. Harris needs to work on her freethrows as it makes up for a missed layup.

An announcer in the GW game said they saw how SGA got so many rebounds, she had like 3 - 4 rebounds on her missed shots racking up big numbers.

The positive side of me says we can make a deep run in the NCAA if we can get there. The pessimist in me is concerned on our missed opportunities which has plagued this team for years. A repeat in the tourney and we are WNIT bound, if that.

Camryn Whitaker, head coach at N Ky and former assistant to Jabir with Shauna, came for Senior Night. She had helped recruit and coached the seniors for 2 (Kelley 3) years. Very nice for a head coach to take time from her schedule this time of year to attend.
I can't believe I managed to forget to look for Olivia Applewhite on the STL bench. Saw her on TV when they were at STL, but completely forgot last night that she is a grad asst.

I didnt think this team would finish .500 this year -- for many of the reasons we saw against SLU. Inability to master the basics. Poor strategy (taking shots too early at the end of quarters). Turnovers. Didnt look good early in the season. Blowing an 18pt second half lead vs Quinnipiac in the season opener was painful. The in-season tourney down in the islands was also tough -- probably should have beaten Ga Tech and Creighton but we couldnt protect the basketball.

What changed was Dayton started winning some of the close games they lost earlier in the year. The Macioce trey to beat Bonas was a big confidence boost. Things got markedly better from there.

That said, I overestimated the strength of the A10. This is probably the weakest A10 in 6-7 seasons. There are no Jonquel Jones, Ally Malotts, Andrea Hoovers, Erin Rooneys, or Natasha Clouds anymore. This reality helped our cause.

Losing Blais might have been a death sentence -- healthy she is good enough to be the best player in the A10. Credit to the team for taking an opportunity and capitalizing on circumstances and also overcoming adversity.

I still believe GW is the clear favorite in the A10 tourney because of how they defend teams. We scored 52 and 39pts against them. When we cannot score, we're in trouble. We did get them at the Arena 52-50, but we got shut down late in the year at Fordham and GW -- both very good defensive teams. We could not score the ball. Not having Burdette didnt help, but Burdette cannot be the sole reason.

Dayton excels at matchups. When we can run and get transition points we are most dangerous. Halfcourt is not our strong suit. Inability to finish inside isnt either. I tend to like our guard play however even if turnovers are, at times, aggravating.

When Layfield is playing well, we tend to play well. She is Shauna Green's Kyle Davis. Not really a shooter. Not really a guard. Not really a forward. Just gives us some toughness and big rebounds. In my opinion shes by FAR our most physical player.

Then again you look at this from another angle -- we make 1/3 of those missed guaranteed 3rd grade layups, make 1/2 of the FTs we bricked, and we beat SLU by 20pts+ and its never a game. And thats still playing C-level basketball. We make nearly all the point-blank layups and hit 80% at the foul line, Wednesday night would have been a 30-35pt annihilation.

In other words, we havent put 40 minutes together all season. Maybe 32 minutes or so vs Texas A&M. If we can put a full 40 together, we might be far better than we even know.
