Smile MSOC: Flyers Shoot Down Hawks 7-1

A blitzkrieg of goals over 90 minutes propelled the Dayton Flyers to a 7-1 carpet-bombing of St. Joseph's on Wednesday night at Baujan Field. Under rainy conditions that eventually dried out, the Flyers scored in a variety of ways and kept a stranglehold on sole possession of first place in the A10 standings, improving to 10-4-2 (5-0-1) while the Hawks fall to 3-11-2 (1-4-1).

Defender Coletun Long got the party started just 1:28 into the match when he sent a long free kick into the SJU goal box that bounced untouched, catching Hawk GK Bobby Edwards out of position while anticipating a deflection by his teammates. The ball continued unimpeded into far corner of the net to give UD a 1-0 lead.

With the rain continuing to pour down, Dayton wasted no time seizing complete control of the run of play, working hard to win 50/50 challenges that resulted in dangerous service to attacking players running into free space. The Hawks had trouble maintaining their defensive shape, creating gaps in their back line that Maik Schoonderwoerd, James Haupt, Michael Frasca, and Tommy Harr repeatedly exploited.

Twenty minutes of dominating play eventually made the score 2-0 when Kissima Bojang knocked a ball home from 12yds out in the central portion of the SJU goal box to stretch the Flyer lead in the 21st minute.

From there, UD never looked back. As the rain subsided, the Flyers did well to manage the slippery conditions and play at a quicker tempo both offensively and defensively. Swinging the ball to the weak side made things easier for UD's attack to find open space moving forward, some of which came from the back line's consistent ball movement and at other times from Amass Amankona serving weak-side balls out of the midfield.

James Haupt made it 3-0 in the 30th minute on a 50yd bazooka near the center circle that caught the SJU goalkeeper pinched too far forward, a goal reminiscent of Carli Lloyd's strike against Japan in the World Cup Final. The ball sailed into the open net for the most impressive tally of the night.

Dayton's 3-0 lead would hold to intermission, benefiting from a commanding 12-3 advantage in shots -- including 4-0 on corner kicks.

The second half began much like the first. The Flyers scored just six minutes after the restart when Michael Frasca took a perfect Amankona feed along the right corner of the box and drilled a shot to the far post to make the score 4-0 in the 51st minute.

Schoonderwoerd added his own name to the box score in the 55th minute on a low-driven free kick from 20yds out that slithered untouched to the far post to put UD up 5-0.

Frasca earned the brace in the 62nd minute on a one-time volley from 15yds out that left the Hawk goalkeeper with no chance at a save.

The Hawks managed to get on the scoreboard themselves in the 69th minute after polishing off a scrum at the six yard line that resulted from UD's inability to make a strong clearance out of the box. It was SJU's first shot on goal of the night.

The Flyers got the goal back less than a minute later when Nick Hagenkord finished inside the box to make it 7-1 and ultimately round out the scoring.

Several other second half scoring chances came and went, including a bevy of opportunities in the final 20 minutes. In some respects the Hawks were fortunate to only lose by six goals, but they did not help themselves defensively on at least two Flyer scores so the result was probably indicative of the match.

Overall shots were 27-11 in favor of Dayton, including 7-2 in corner kicks.

St. Joseph's was simply over-matched from start to finish and perhaps that's no surprise considering their overall record. Dayton, atop the A10 standings, is playing some of their best soccer of the season and beginning to hit on all cylinders. The defense is organized and keeping their shape, the offense is proving dangerous on long balls and off-the-ball runs into free space, and most importantly the Flyers just keep winning.

That's the formula needed to stay on top of the standings, secure the A10 regular season title, and the #1 overall seed in the A10 Tournament. An NCAA at-large bid is all but impossible at this point, so peaking at the right time will give UD the best chance to make the postseason.

It remains to be seen how much progress the Flyers have made over the last month of the season. The A10 is among the weakest conferences in the nation this year and with just three Top-100 RPI wins (none inside the Top-50), it's hard to say how UD stacks up in their current form. Losses earlier in the season to #17 Ohio State, #41 Radford, #103 Marquette, and #108 Oakland still leave some unanswered questions. That said, St. Joseph's had not surrendered more than three goals in a match since August 31st. UD's owns the nation's highest-scoring offense and it shows.

UD travels to Fordham for a match on Oct 31st.
