VB Adds a Setter for 2020

UDs Top 40 2020 recruiting class just got better. Horsmon & company just added a 6’2” Setter. Aspen Aldous from Gilbert, AZ.

https://mobile.twitter.com/aspenaldous

Aldous had great junior and senior years including leading her high school to the 6A State Championship last Nov and All-State First Team honors. She was also one of the 65 best prep setters in the country as a finalist for the National Setter of the Year award given out by PrepVolleyball during her junior year.

Her high school coach said the following about her setter enroute to that state Championship...

“Aspen efficiently ran a fast 5-1 offense and was equally aggressive with her attack on the second ball and defense along the net.”

Aspen was also named a prepvolleyball High Honorable Mention All-American in 2019 (her junior year). There are 150 AAs, 75 Highest Honorable Mention - of which Alayna Yates was listed as a junior, and 125 High Honorable Mentions. Yates ended up as the #51 Recruit her senior year and headlines this recruiting class.

This looks like a player who may have slipped through the cracks and could be a big win for UD. She did have campus visits scheduled, but all got cancelled due to the coronavirus -as did her club season after two months. Aspen was highlighted in prepvolleyball’s court side reports because she was performing well at some of the early Jan-Feb club tournaments before the clubs shut down.

With two 5’10” setters on the roster, it’s good to add a 6’2” player. I fully expect Bridget to be running a 5-1 offense when the season starts. But if Aspen comes in and works her behind off, there is opportunity here to make contributions in her first year. TH will play the best combination of players. He doesn’t care if you’re a Top 50 Recruit or a walk-on. If you earn it, you will play.

Dug a little deeper and found out Aspen was probably the best player on her club team. No one on her club was a Top 250 Recruit. The Recruit lists are based on rankings from a large panel of high school-club-college coaches. These coaches watch these players for years at club tournaments. If you’re not on an elite club team you simply don’t get seen...making it tough to get ranked.

On the flip side...I found this...Aspen’s high school team that won the AZ 6AChampionship and finished ranked #76 in the national rankings, also had the AZ POY and AZ Gatorade POY...OH Jaelyn Hodge. Hodge is the #20 Recruit in the 2020 class. She is headed to AZ to compete in the PAC 12. Stanford has the #5 ranked Recruit, and Hodge is the next highest PAC Recruit this year. This is what I like best about Aspen, she spent her high school career setting one of the best hitters in the country. Hodge is an effortless jumper and projected to dominate in the PAC. Hitters at this level have setters that can get them the ball in the right spot along the net to beat the blocks. The setter in this case was Aspen.

This could be a great player before she is done. Gotta come in and work hard, but she has experience playing with elite players. We will have hitters that ranked #51, #66 and #73 in their classes. If Aspen can place the ball well, she could impact the Flyers fast-paced offense.

Aspen’s high school coach runs a VB club in the off-season. She tweeted congrats to Aspen and made a note to post the Dayton coaches were so great interacting with Aspen and her family during the recruiting process. Always good to hear our coaching staffs are so professional in dealing with recruits. We all know that is not the case by all coaches. Flyer Blessed!
