Dayton Sails Past Fordham 4-0

DAYTON (OH) -- The Dayton Flyers made quick work of Fordham University on Friday evening at Baujan Field, hammering the Rams 4-0 to open the A10 portion of the 2010 schedule. Three first-half goals and another after intermission improved UD to 9-2-0 (1-0), while Fordham falls to 4-7-0 (0-1).

The early moments of the match started off similar to last weekend's victory over Wright State as Dayton got on the scoreboard in the opening minutes. Senior Kelly Blumenschein threaded a perfect pass from 20yds out that caught fellow senior Jerica DeWolfe making a direct run through Fordham's back line. The through-ball hit DeWolfe in stride and with only the goalkeeper to beat, she nailed a high quality shot into the net for the 1-0 Dayton lead in the second minute of play.

Things were looking good and only got better. Over the next few minutes, UD knocked the ball around with ease and did a great job of making the extra pass to open up the field. Blumenschein would find the net in the 10th minute after a quick counter-attack caught Fordham napping. A poor clear allowed freshman Juliana Libertin to pick off the pass from 30 yards out. Heady play from Libertin resulted in a quick re-direct into free space for Blumenschein to run after along the right side of the box. Another high quality finish from the Flyers put the home team up 2-0.

Over the next 25 minutes, the run of play was all Dayton. Head Coach Mike Tucker's squad played some of their best soccer of the year with unselfish play across the entire pitch. Time and again, the extra pass allowed Dayton players to roam free into space to jump-start the offense. The back line did a great job of distributing to the midfield, while the midfielders worked the ball on the ground with solid success without having to play kick-and-run with the Flyer strikers.

The good soccer once again paid off in the 35th minute when Colleen Williams took a properly-weighted pass from Kelsey Owen along the left side of the box that forced the Fordham goalkeeper from her net. Williams beat the keeper to the ball with a touch to her left, collected herself, and calmly finished things off past retreating defenders (and an open net) for the 3-0 Dayton advantage.

Williams almost made it 4-0 moments later, but popped a terrific cross over the crossbar -- a chance she rarely misses. By halftime, UD owned a 9-2 advantage in shots and 5-2 lead in corner kicks.

The second half played out one of two ways: Dayton eased up a bit or Fordham played more inspired soccer. A little of both was likely. With the match all but decided and the Flyers on cruise control, Fordham did a better job of winning some loose balls at times. Even with their better intentions however, Dayton never looked threatened and continued to do as they pleased when they chose to turn things on.

Much of the second half played out with less excitement than the first 45 minutes, but the Flyers brought a number of players off the bench and spread the playing time around. Dayton missed a couple of other quality chances to score until Alexis Garcia hit paydirt in the 78th minute with a well-slotted ball past the keeper from the left side of the box. Garcia's goal benefited from a nice assist from Josie Grant in the middle of the field as Grant pushed the ball wide for Garcia to run on to.

Flyer goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers wasn't tested all night. Final match stats were all Dayton with a 22-4 domination in shots and 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Dayton did a bunch of things well tonight, first and foremost finishing their best scoring chances with quality strikes of the ball on frame. Not only were all four goals top notch, each goal was the result of an assist that was just as solid. The four scoring pieces were among the best six of seven of the entire season -- at least at Baujan Field.

Teammates did a nice job of sharing the ball and switching fields to keep the Rams on their heels. Outside of one poor touch, central defender Kelsey Miller had another strong game in the back line, making quick work of pressure and keeping everyone organized in front of her. Allison Giner was back in uniform along the right side of the defense, while Kathleen Beljan mopped up the leftovers others couldn't handle.

Blumenschein came out like a house of fire in the first half, weighting good passes to teammates including a great toe-chip over the Fordham back line to a teammate headed toward goal. Add to that her textbook finish on the second goal and it was good night all around for the Beavercreek native.

The Flyers honored their seniors Friday evening with Rodgers, Blumenschein, Giner, DeWolfe, and Tori Oelschlager all earning starts. Fellow senior Cara Cornacchia was also honored as she serves as a volunteer assistant coach for 2010.

Dayton looks to remain undefeated in league play with a Sunday afternoon match against LaSalle at Baujan Field.
