Virginia
UV is a very good team, and is 10-2 with some good wins. I hope they are looking ahead to the next games, Cuse, U of L and NC.

Looking at yesterdays stats vs Liberty it appears our starters were not honed in going 3 for 17 (Includes Cannatelli). Thank god for the bench who showed up including Dennis with 39 points coming from the paint.
Hope it was just too much celebrating for Christmas. Need everyone today and the rest of the way.
Go Flyers!

7 PM tonight. The game can be viewed on Watch ESPN (ESPN3). It is on the ACC Extra Network, but from what I have read, as long as you have access to ESPN3, you can watch.

Flyers look pretty good early in the first -- up 12-6 midway through. Good shooting, but turnovers already a concern.
And ACC Network has the old logo. SID office needs to fix that!

Great start 12-6 UD at first timeout. Really getting on the offensive glass. Need to stop going inside to SGA. Would be better to just throw the ball out of bounds and eliminate the fastbreaks after she fumbles it.

Under 5 in the first and UD up 12-6. JB sitting with 6 points. Nice start, but it's only the beginning. Go UD!

Our size is our advantage today, except for two early fouls by Grant. Playing well other than the early turnovers on entry passes, 6 in the first quarter.

I can live with 43% as "pretty good."
Some bad turnovers early in the quarter -- I should have been more specific in that they were taking better care of the ball as the quarter progressed.
That said, a couple of turnovers early in the second. We'll see...

Yes they have and since we seem to have little offense other than JB. Need to get Jo Lay driving. Haven't seen Scaife. Jiacone looked ok in short stint. We need some one else to create. Kelley is too slow for this and limted to defense and spot up shooting. LC is unfathomable.

Yeah, I don't know what's up w/ LC. Sophomore slump, I guess.
I like how Flyers are rebounding. Shooting is kind of streaky, though.

Missed SGA ON d and rebounding. Like our chances in second half if we keep driving rather than quick 3's. Need at least some garbage baskets from Harris. Hope JB has something left after two days an 19 mins .

Our fouls, 10, and turnovers, 12, are keeping this close. Burdette and Scaife are the only offense. Hopefully Grant can stay in and out of trouble. They struggled defending her in the 5 minutes she played, which opened up the outside shots.

Scaife with 5 pts off the bench. The other six scored 0.

Wow Jenna Burdette should have stayed in the locker room. Now has 8 turn overs herself. Totally unacceptable for a pt guard, with only 3 assists.
We are beating ourselves.

Our defense has gone south. Gave up 12 in the first quarter, 18 in the second and 21 in the third on 64% shooting by UVA. Poor effort.

FGs, both 2 and 3, pretty even.
FTs are the difference: UVA 14-18 vs UD 6-10.

Poorly played third quarter. 4 TOs in a row. Harris bricks 2 FTs in a row and then gets a freebie on a lane violation and bricks that one too. UVA high extended defense is not being attacked. We look like we do not have a plan to split that double up top and make them pay. Just passing around the perimeter. This falls on the coaching staff.
Cavs just living off of UD turnovers. Not shown much else -- but they havent needed to.

Well, when many possessions go through her 3-4 times because noone else is generating offense, I'm not too surprised.

She does a good job when there's a big post to push against and contain, but that's not the case in this game.

UVA have pushed their defense so far out to stop Austria and Jenna, yet we are keeping the ball on the outside.

virgina game - how bad can it get?
We are seeing this year the decline in Dayton's women's basketball. Burdette is being asked, or thinks she has been asked, to carry the team. It appears she can't. (8 turnovers with 8 minutes to go)
This team has 19 turnovers with most of the fourth period to go. The highly regarded recruiting class looks average at best. SGA never got much better - the reason, Her or Coaching?
JJ's attraction to foreign players resulted in SGA, Mandy and Andi. He appears to have failed in in this regard.
Good luck on recruiting with recruits watching this team and our new coach.
Bring in Rex Ryan ( can he be worse? ). If he is too expensive, how about Rollo?
At least the men have valid reasons for their problems.

Harris has a wide-open lane to the hoop and kicks it out to KA who misses a 3. What's up with that?

We have a lot of problems. Wish I knew what happened. We had a program, we were rolling, dominating our conference and building a national reputation. Now we are at best mediocre, but that's just being kind.

Bungled inbound pass w/ a minute to go pretty much sums this one up.

Burdette with no points and five turnovers this half.
Grant had 5" on that girl and never blocked out or tried for that rebound.

Cannot decide whether it is poor players or poor coaching, but fixing the second would help the first.

Toughness. We just don't have it.
22 turnovers - many just from being too wimpy.
This looking more and more like a .500 season

10/22 A/TO to UVA's 12/13. Tough to win like that.

Well I said we would go 3 of 4 to finish the non con at 6-6 and 0-1. But I thought we lose to A&M and beat Virginia.
The second half was as poorly played as any Dayton womens bball team of recent memory.
Is this one step back and two forward or are we stuck in mediocrity.
Four games in 3 days is a tough schedule. UMass game now in jeopardy with only one day inbetween.

Virginia has a really strong defense. This can account for the turnover issue being so glaring. This to me is coaching. We also have to remember this is a first time head coach. She is learning like her players are at this point.
It will be rocky here and there. As long as they come together in league play and learn from this one, the season will turn out pretty decent.
It is hard when you have a big or set of bigs that cannot help inside to take the pressure off our guards. This too is a coaching issue. I would rather see us go small and push instead of keeping the bigs in.
Scaife, Harris, Burdette, Austria, and Layfield would be my starters and filter the rest in as different sub packages.
We have to have better spacing than what we get...i truly believe we will be in the top three in this league. We can win the conference and I think we will as long as they learn from playing a strong ACC team like UVA.
UVA will be an NCAA tournament team.
Go Flyers

We need a reliable scorer to take some load off of Jenna.
Started to see the beginning of these issues last year. Even though Jodie stepped up defensively with some great blocking, with Kelley and Amber (and to a lesser extent, Celeste) injured, I think a lot got lost in that shuffle.
When Hoover, who's talented and tough as nails, and Malott, who's reliable on both ends, graduated, everyone knew there'd be huge shoes to fill. Losing two WNBA players (your only two ever) would be hard on any program.
Last year's team never really seemed to get going with the early season injuries, and I think that foundering carries forward to now. Couple that with a new HC, and it's a lot to overcome. I think this will just be the rebuilding year last year was supposed to be. There's some good talent on the team -- can Coach Green mold it into a winner? Only time will tell.
In any event, I'll be there Saturday cheering for the Flyers!

We had no idea how to attack the 2-high defense. I saw few bench adjustments in this regard. When you have more TOs than made baskets, you will lose every time.
Kelley's defense is almost a liability now. Her inability to stay in front of a player is tough to watch. Most of it not her fault. We remember a time before two knee pretzels when she was one of the best defenders UD ever suited up.
No ball handler other than Jenna. This is the real crutch right now. Her 9 TOs were inexcusable, but a few of them were fatigue TOs. Not her fault nobody else can bring the ball up and break a trap. In some ways she's a victim to the circumstances.
Two tough charge calls in 4th qtr when we made the baskets. Poor defense late. The wide open cut/layup -- inexcusable.
We are woefully short on athleticism, speed, quickness, and fundamentals. On any given night we might be able to cover for a couple of them, but not all 4-5. That's why we're losing. Too many holes in too many players' games.
I disagree that UVA will be in the NCAA tourney. I think they will struggle to make the postseason of any kind. They did not show me much other than some defensive pressure. But any team with a coach worth their salt would defend us that way and probably see those same positive results. They have a decent record, but havent beaten anyone great and will likely get carved up in the ACC. Syracuse, ND, UNC, Duke, Louisville, NC State, Miami, Virginia Tech, et al will abuse them.
They only play 2 teams outside the Top-100 the rest of the season. They've only beaten two inside the Top-100 so far. Their RPI is third worst in the whole league. A typical Dayton team/program should have gone into Charlottesville and won by 15pts.

Quarter wise we scored 17-12-16-11. That fourth quarter shows a lack of adjustment. UVA threw up that 1-2-2 zone, and we never adjusted. You beat it by getting the ball to the middle and then to the weak side and corners. You lose by pushing your offensive players out to half court and passing around the three point line. Several time we had two high post players, which is suicide. We had Grant up on the three point line several times.
Grant and Harris were 7-8 shooting. So money, when we got them the ball. Eight shots by those two against that zone was terrible offensive coaching. Scaife is an excellent offensive player. Put her in the corners against that zone, instead she is running around up top.
Lastly, Jenna cannot play almost every minute and be effective. Green has to play either Lauren or Kelly at point for about ten minutes, and make sure Jenna is at full strength for the fourth quarter. You see what Archie does, Crosby will play substantial minutes in the first half. Yesterday Jenna was out one minute in the first half.

Good analysis. Think about what we would have been like without ally and Andrea for four years. Replace those two with average players and how good would ud have been? Two players make a huge difference.
I think the new player coming in can be a difference maker get two more and the future looks much different

I agree a lot with what you said Chris, except the UVA in the NCAA tournament. They play in a tough conference and they were a WNIT team last year and on the bubble a lot of the year for the NCAA tournament. They have a coach who knows how to win and has done so for years. They have 5 newcomers and are playing pretty well. They are going to be there as their defense will carry them in some games. They can win scoring 60 a game because they make you play their game.
Dayton's problem is they allowed UVA to control the tempo. This is exactly what happened last year to this team and in several games this season. They could control more of the tempo with Hoover and Malott.
The problem for Kelley is that her first couple of years she had Hoover and Malott to take the pressure off her offensively. They created their own shots and this allowed her to move freely one on one and set up to shoot. This made her a more effective scorer. Now with 2 knee surgeries she has to be a little gun shy and she has no one other than JB to score. She is not a slasher and shot creater. She needs to be able to set up her shot.
This is the problem with LC right now too. She had people to help set her up last year and she could knock down the shots. This year is too much pressure on her to score and she is not a driver/slasher either.
I would like to see Giacone get more time at the point. I think she can handle the ball and can be a player. She just needs more time and experience, but she isn't getting it being on the bench.
They do need to learn to pass up over that pressure defense, but they just keep making the same mistakes and that is coaching. I am hoping that a win over UMASS will help them get back some of the confidence they had heading into the UVA game.
I really do believe they will have a decent A-10 season. They still need time to find that combination that works. I still believe they need to go smaller and quicker and run the bigs in and out in short stretches.
Go Flyers!

I haven't seen a game in person this year. In the past Kelley was very capable of driving on almost anyone if they really pressured her. From what I hear she either doesn't have that quickness right now or she fears driving and suffering another knee injury.
Right now it is so obvious that the flyers have one player who can break down a defense and distribute the ball. That is a physical and mental challenge for Jenna because teams have five players focused on her at all times.

Jenna - When is too Much
Despite prior comments in this post she played 38 of 40 minute against UMASS.
And I think this is the first of three A-10 games in the span of seven days with a there and back to St Bonnie in the middle. Hope this is not an Amber Deane injury waiting to happen. I do not think she is an Andrea Hoover type of strong player.
Once again I hope I am wrong.

I remember Shauna saying that they were going to limit Jenna's minutes this year but I think she has realized it isn't possible to play her 30 minutes. Kelley also played 36 minutes. Jenna struggled with shin splints last year and you hope that doesn't happen again. They desperately need another guard to provide consistent play
I think that Amber's injury was a fluke. When it happened I thought "that doesn't look good" because of how she limped afterwards. But, I didn't expect her to miss more than a game or two. It looked like a simple knee to the thigh which happens all the time
