I agreed with this before, last year I think...on tv, because of the side of the arena that the TV camera is set up on, you NEVER see the words "Blackburn Court".
It is like those words are not even written on the border of the court.

Why can't such a simple thing get done?
There is no advertisement on court that would
need to be removed and/or cost $$$.

Is this really a burning issue for the university? Whether or not people on TV -- the majority of which have no idea who this "Blackburn" guy is -- can see the name?
If it's Dean Smith or Phog Allen sure. There's nostalgia there for even the average viewer. But I doubt there's really any strong reason to do this. Or to be fair any reason to not do it. It's just not something to get worked up about I think.

Either put it where it's
100% visible or remove
it....and are you thinking
Donoher Court may have
been more appropriate
since "no one knows
Bkackburn"?

Alternatively, perhaps it gives people pause to look up Blackburn and Donoher, and realize UD is resurgent rather than a Johnny come lately. Not unlike Guy V. Lewis written on University of Houston court. Until I looked a couple of things up I couldn't have told you anything other than they lost to the Wolfpack in one of the luckiest and most amazing finishes in a NC ever. Turns out if you look at his record he was a pretty good coach. Not a bad thing to advertise history. Otherwise why hang banners etc?

Ask 100 people under the age of 50 at the next UD Game who Phog Allen was?
Same question, under the age of 30 for Dean Smith.
I bet the percentage of fans who know are in the single digits.

We should be able to see it better. Tom Blackburn made Dayton basketball one of the top programs of the 50s and 60s. Be proud of our history. Let people ask" who was Blackburn?" Maybe they will look it up and see how great UD was and obviously see how the program has been reborn.

Agree 100%. TB took over a podunk basketball program in 1947,at a small Catholic school that no one had heard about, and built it into a top five program. He, and we, had the winningest program in all basketball in the decades 0f the 50's and 60's. Put it on the court in big letters, let those who don't know about him become educated.

I think "Tom Blackburn Court" or "Thomas Blackburn Court" should be written on the court. I think coach's first name should be included.

I bet most 'under 30' would think Phog Allen was a Pokémon and Dean Smith was that guy in Animal House.

It was not on the baseline during the last UD home game, Dayton vs. George Mason.
Again, the "Blackburn Court" part is completely blocked out/invisible on tv because of the press row and the fact that the TV camera is on the same side of the court as the words "Blackburn Court".
This is the court design that was used during the George Mason game:

It hasn't been on the baseline since they got the new court. It's along the sideline in front of press row as the photo above shows.

Even with the old design, I would have preferred a more prominent location, the lettering is too small IMO also.

So we have spent the last two or three days arguing over what players belong in the UD athletics hall of fame and whether Blackburn Court isn't displayed prominently enough on the court.
I'd almost prefer a discussion on whether UD should be in the Big East.

So move it. Or don't move it. Write it in big cursive letters across the entire court. Rebrand the whole building "Blackburn Court at the Donoher Arena" if it blows your hair back. It will make a 0% difference to anything that matters.

while a "1st world problem", it could definitely be re-thought graphically. coach blackburn & donoher built the foundation -- their legacy is part of our DNA.
like it or not, "PNC Bank" is probably here to stay ... better on the floor than in the building name, right?
i've always liked the actual signature on memorial courts. you could add the words "BLACKBURN COURT" and coach's signature at half court opposite the PNC logos, or in the corners inside 3-pt line. see example from Purdue:
of course, that goes away for NCAA First Four and tournament games when our normal floor is replaced. if broadcasters follow the media guide, coach blackburn should still get some spoken respect.

13,000 people can see it every game. It's not like its hidden and nobody can see it. The design of the court is fine. I think it looks better with all of that on the sidelines and baselines. Looks much cleaner. I wish they would get rid of the PNC logo on the floor, but it helps pay the bills.

We already have the Donoher Center, do not name the entire Arena after him. Arena naming right are saved for another coach.
I can hear ESPN now, "we are live at Archie Miller Arena where the #1 ranked Dayton Flyers are about to take on #2 in the nation and conference rival ____________ (not naming names, would hate to see this thread hijacked ) on Blackburn Court. A comment....
No doubt, Tom Blackburn is and will always be an icon at our U.
And, we have honored others like Baujan, Frericks, Donoher,...all well deserved. Nonetheless, arguably, a man who's contributions to UD athletics are not exceeded by anyone is Ted Kissell.
When Ted arrived UD did not have an athletics program. We had a history of success in basketball and a successful football team. That was it. The rest of UD athletics didn't compare favorably to Div I schools by any measure and in many instances was not up to Div III level.
Look at UD today. Our excellent broad-based program is the result of Ted's vision, strategy and execution. The trend in recent years is to name facilities after donors. I hope that before what Ted set in motion and accomplished are forgotten the U finds a way to recognize his accomplishments.

Since we need to honor more people I decided to add onto ClaytonFlyerFan's ESPN intro and get some sponsorship money out of it too.
"Welcome to the University of Dayton Archie Miller Lite Arena where the #1 ranked Dayton Flyers are about to tipoff in the Ted Kissell PNC Center Circle on Tom Blackburn Tire Discounters Court against conference rival Gonzaga in a matchup of top 10 US Catholic Conference rivals. The Zags just arrived today via hyperloop and are ready for a battle in the Don Donoher Mike's Nashville Hot Chicken Free Throw Lane."
Everyone feel free to add on to this intro if you can think of anyone else to honor. Remember that each honoree is potential sponorship money.

But look at all the extra room to draw the opponents big men away from the basket, opening up crazy lanes for Smith and Cooke.

davidson court
tonite's game will be a good example -- facsimile of (existing) coach's signature on either side of half court. the "wright state-ish" WILDCATS wordmark with clunky drop shadow is unfortunate.
no corporate sponsors on davidson's court, but building named for '43 alum and department store magnate John Belk.
that cat looks SUPER GAY ... not that there's anything wrong with that.
