I agree. These are the high end guys we always seemed to miss in the past, and our consolation prize was always, "But look who we got. This guy can dunk the ball very well."
The last few years have made it fun to be a Flyer. I'm enjoying this journey immensely.

Not much talk about Carter, he's a little behind everyone age wise, but his highlights shows a pretty explosive athlete.

I don't know about THEE reason, but certainly another one, along with a great class coming in, where he can do what he does best, and that is develop already good talent.
In a few short weeks we have gone from desperately needing a point guard to McKinley, DD, and Crosby as a group Arch can develop into a serviceable pg trio. That allowed him to take a "veteran" wing in Svobada.

I'd say having the Greek freak's brother may be the biggest reason he'll stay..That kid could be a game/program-changer and be the real horse that can take UD to a top 10 team..You simply don't see players that tall, that long, and that skillful coming from the pedigree that he comes from..

If Wade leaves VCU, doesn't that free up all of their recruits? Their recruiting class was ranked 25th overall. I don't think we have any scholarships available but it's not like something couldn't change. Could be interesting.

I read Pride Plus, and your game/program changer is very premature, or maybe some of you saying this stuff have seen him play, or have insider info. I worry they are just banking on his brother's skills.

Probably, but not for guaranteed. Assuming they've all signed a LOI (don't know if that is the case or not) they would have to ask the school for a release. generally speaking they will grant it, may have some provisions attached to it, but they'll generally give it otherwise it sets a poor precedence down the road that may make it tougher to recruit. They could also promote from within and have a guy on staff who was their lead recruiting take the top job and they don't even ask but remain committed to the coach that did the recruiting for Wade.
If Wade or Archie or any other coach leaves for a different job or gets fired, its pretty much guaranteed that all recruits will get sniffs from other schools, how much depends on how the recruit feels about the school in light of the situation.

Saw Jordan Davis sitting a couple rows back of the bench. When he stood at the end he looks solid with a good build.

This Kostas kid from Dayton, you need to keep your eye on him. He is going to be a DIAPER DANDY, A REAL PTP'R BABBBBYYYY Someone told me the other day that Kostas's brother has gained 50 pounds since joining the nba and didn't lose any athleticism. Let's see what happens with Kostas! I believe he has six months to work on his skills and strength before the first practice
I think this is a special recruiting class for UD with a higher ceiling than the great class graduating this year.
I agree with the previous poster that this has a shot of becoming a legit top 10 team.

There is a nice article in this morning's Rochester Democrat & Chronicle on Naz Carter. I'm posting the link but I'm not sure if the article is behind a subscription firewall or not. If so, I apologize for this teaser. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/...inas/98355134/

We have a better strength of schedule, and would have had more top 25, 50 and top 100 wins. We would be #1
Are we really debating the what ifs? Is it Wednesday night yet?

Every so often i sit back and just enjoy the ride. These are so the Golden Years of the program. Hopefully its a trend. Some of the topics that get discussed these days as a winning program are hilarious if you think about it.
Soak it in, this is the Seniors last ride. Hopefully they give us one for the ages that we will all never forget. Ive been watching since '92. I have never felt as hopeful for a Final Four as i do right now.

No time to be overly negative,
We have a great team of finishers dressing up these days. Are they without flaws? Of course not. But with this memorable Senior class and the awesome newbies next year, it is a time to celebrate Flyer basketball. Our new recruits are posting some big numbers in HS.

The UC boys defeated Morris Catholic 82-52 here at UC on Senior Day. Jordan Pierce led UC with 19 points, 17 in the first half.
Nice effort from the big fella on senior day

As I have posted before, my thinking is that Archie stays at UD until he feels that there is "something" at UD, or inherent within UD, that is keeping him from making progress toward winning at the highest level. If he were to never be able to sign one of his top target recruits, then that could be the thing that does it. If I understood this years recruiting targets, McKinley Wright and the kid the eventually went to Maryland, were his top choices. So by signing one of his top "wants" there would not seem to be anything keeping him from progressing on his goal...... so he will not be leaving......

Nahziah Carter's team, Bishop Kearney, was eliminated in the Section V Class AA semifinals on Wed. 3/1 by Fairport 58-46. Nahziah's totals for the evening were 28 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals! Not a bad nights work! Bishop Kearney's season concluded with a 16-7 record. Nahziah averaged 20ppg in those 23 games!
He will give the Flyers some valuable minutes next season.

Champlin Park ran their record to 25-0 on Tues. 2/28 by winning at Totino-Grace 93-73! McKinley Wright had 24 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in leading his team.
The Rebels have one more regular season game tomorrow evening, Fri. 3/3, a home game with Robbinsdale Armstrong which is Senior Night!

I understand what you're saying but getting the "wants" is dependent in part on the program and possibly on the conference. While I am always hopeful for our incoming class, none of them are ranked top 5 at their position. Archie's "wants" are tempered.
... and they should be tempered. We don't need Archie spending all kinds of time tilting at windmills as the kids say. Ideally the level of recruits gets even better as we progress. But basing the potential for leaving on getting 1 want doesn't seem like the most likely reasoning. In theory, shouldn't Archie have been trying to get out of here when all he had was TL last year (or this year's soph class) if that was the case?
Not meant as a knock on TL and yes I know the kids don't say tilting at windmills... but they should.

Seniors (1)- DD
Juniors (5)-Cunningham, Mikesell, Crosby, Sam, XW
Soph (1) - Landers
Freshman (6) - Kostas, Pierce, Davis, Wright, Carter, and that Euro guy.
Unless I'm missing something, that's 13. With only 12 scholarships available. So what's the plan next year and for this JUCO guy?

Watched the entire game. McKinley had to have a double, double because I counted at least ten rebounds! Reminds me of Scoochie because he played unselfish and tried to get his teammates involved during the whole game but can take control at the end of games and can score at will like Scoochie. Not saying he is near as good ( I think Scoochie is as good as any PG in the country ) but has the ability to reach for another gear when he needs to.

McKinley has the advantage over Scooch in that he already has a college-ready body--#11 had to build his when he got to UD. Wright consistently found teammates open for shots and in typical HS fashion they didn't make them all. He is a pass-first PG who can score as well. He took over in the 2nd half when the game got close. The one alley oop to Theo John was a thing of beauty.
Flyer fans are gonna love this kid for the next four years.

One thing I have noticed in the videos is how McKinley has complete control of the offense. He runs it from A to Z! Also, watch what happens when he starts to get trapped or double-teamed; he is lightening quick on dribbling through the traps before they can be executed. I don't know how they found McKinley, but boy is he going to be enjoyable to watch over the next four years!

Wright looks like he can be a pretty darn good college player. Just remember - he's playing in a suburban Minnesota league. Not talking Chicago Public League Red here (ask Kyle and Kendall if there is a difference ).
Looks like Wright had offers from:
Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Memphis, Nebraska, and X.
Other than X, all of the above have been clearly established in the "Archie Watch" threads as sub par programs to Dayton. So what gives? His size?

Champlin Park is still rated #5 in the USAToday Computer rankings, but not ranked in the Expert (??) Rankings. They are only 10th in the Midwest Region Expert (??) Rankings.
What is the deal, does Champlin not have a football team?

Struggling with the fact that I am about to make this post. I completely disagree with recruiting middle school players and even to some extent freshman in high school. There is just to much that can happen in those 4 high school years. With that being said this was too good not to share with the board.
There is an 8th grader in the Huber Heights school system that will be a freshman next fall at Wayne High School.

Unbelievable talent. He developed big time between 7th and 8th grade. UD and Archie have done a great job getting some of the top players out of Wayne High School. This is a kid that I hope Archie gets on early and keeps in Dayton.

They lost 1 game in 7th grade but won the middle school tournament championship. Undefeated as 8th graders and repeated as middle school tournament champions.

One thing I love abour reffing is that I get to see a lot of these kids long before most of us have heard of them. For instance, Trotwood has a couple freshman who are studs and were dunking machines in 8th grade, too, and I've seen them up close and personal. I'm sure Archie is all over these 3 kids. As well as Matta, Cronin and probably a few out-of-state coaches.

I can confirm the Wantz Middle School Vikings circa 1988 were not throwing alley oops to eighth graders.

Xenia's Samari Curtis is a sophomore...my son played Dayton Metro AAU with him for 2 years. Quick as lightening. Below are his stats:

No surprise... McKinley is one of the Final 5 Minnesota Mr. Basketball
Mr Basketball MN @MrBB_MN
The Five Mr. Basketball finalists (in alphabetical order) are: Trae Berhow, Brad Davison, Goanar Mar, Nathan Reuvers and McKinley Wright.
Him and Davison are probably the two front-runners

And it's JFK on the break... Kennedy drives the lane, bounce pass to Johnson... Johnson slips the defender and slams it home! He slammed that home like he slammed the Voting Rights Act through Congress!!!
Sorry.

I have watched many great players at a junior high level. Most turn out to be very good players, but not great. James became great, Mayo became very good and Bailey never made it beyond college. Some kids just mature early and never become great college players.

It's more that some kids really never mature at all rather than maturing early...Big big difference not being the BMOC anymore, having to actually "compete" against 1-2 kids at your position, being away from every SOB that kissed their ass the previous 5-6 years, having to actually "work hard", having to actually learn to be "responsible" on your own, having to actually listen to their coaches, and hoping the love and desire to play and get better thrive...

ESPN has noted today that there is a lack of good point guards in this year's senior HS class. They said that about five top programs are still seeking a PG. Georgetown's PG just decommitted. Thank goodness Archie got a great one!

I had a conversation with a Bonnie's fan in Pgh who lives in Rochester, NY and follows HS bball closely. He has seen Carter play several times and raved about him. He said we will surprised at how good he is. I think he may be the surprise next year.

I know we have other things on our minds, but is there any news on our recruits for next year?
Must have had some state tourney games played, or end of year awards, something!

Wright may be the only one left playing; not 100% positive, but I recall a couple of recruits seasons' already ending.
I assume your search function works as well as mine, Champlin Park plays their 2nd tournament game this evening.

And Wright may well be Mr. Basketball in MN. This is easily the most talented coming class we've had in many years.

Not sure they offered him.
"Virginia Tech, Xavier, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Butler, Kansas State, Virginia Commonwealth, Charlotte and others offered him scholarships."

They find them and then stay on them. Ostrom and Kuwik are great recruiters. If you listen to the kids they recruit, a recurring theme is how UD is always around during AAU season and staying in constant communication.

And Griffin was relentless with Scoochie.

I know loyalty is fleeting in college basketball and figuring out the mind of an 18-year-old being wooed is close to impossible, but it seems like the players Miller and company get in on early appreciate the early attention UD pays and stay pretty loyal to Dayton even in the face of late surges by higher profile programs. It's a pretty impressive effort and performance by UD's staff, I think.

Obscure recruits that fly under most evaluators and early verbals are about the only ways a mid-major coach/recruiter can compete with the big boys. Gregory had it but Archie has it in spades. And the real sweet part, the icing on the cake is that Archie will develop and hone that talent continually from the start. The level of talent coming in next year is an improvement on any class Archie and staff have had to date. I fully expect next year's edition to compete for the league title and another dance bid. Somehow, some way Archie will get it done. He's only getting better and I think the more recruits see him the more they want to play for his intense sideline style. I have a feeling the next class will include a major piece or two that get later looks from the more traditional powerhouse programs too.

It's fun when people cherry pick. Archie recruited Kyle, Scoochie, and Kendall, as well as Xeyrius, Big Steve, baby D, Pierre... he also got Vee Sanford, Jordan Sibert, Charles Cooke to transfer here. The incoming class includes a top-100 in Kostas, the South Carolina POY, the possible Mr. Basketball for Minnesota, a 7-foot tree trunk, and a young guy with hops and upside.
Has every player worked out? Of course not. Scott and Robinson are talented guys who are both playing professionally, and of course didn't work out here, but they are skilled guys.
There's other players of course, but it's a pretty weak take to name 3 sophomores and a freshman who barely played on a team with 4 seniors and point to that as evidence of poor recruiting. Especially after a year in which we won the A10, and made the NCAA for the 4th year in a row.

They are on the precipice of leadership roles on the team. It is far too early to evaluate as Archie is not done with the developmental process.

There is something called development that also goes with recruiting. Still a little too early to tell as we got pretty spoiled with the group that just graduated.
