Flyers Shoot Down Minutewomen 5-0

DAYTON (OH) -- Three first half goals and two more in the second half capped off the home portion of the 2010 schedule with a convincing 5-0 victory of the UMass Minutewomen on Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field. Dayton improves to 12-2 (4-0-0), while UMass falls to 5-8-0 (2-2-0).

The disparity in talent was evident soon after the opening whistle as Dayton got after things offensively. UMass -- lacking speed, technical ability, and a penchant for winning loose balls -- had trouble finding any possession for themselves. As a result, UD moved the ball forward and dominated the midfield with better hustle and touches of the ball.

The UMass back line chose to play extremely flat in the first half and that opened up great scoring opportunities for UD to slide balls behind the last defender and attack the goal unimpeded.

After several good chances, UD found the net in the 10th minute on a jailbreak along the right side of the field. Attacking goalkeeper Emersyn Pullan, freshman Juliana Libertin approached the goal and finished with composure by tucking it off the far post to put the Flyers up 1-0. It was Libertin's first career goal.

Over the next 20 minutes, the entire run of play belonged to the Flyers. More through-balls behind the UMass back line continued to pose problems for the opposition. Dayton once again did a nice job of knocking the ball around and being patient. Some opportunities were there to play quicker however and UD was slow to recognize the open field or numbers advantage in front of them, mostly because of too much standing at times. Things were coming so easily however, it was hard to stay engaged.

UMass was hanging on, mostly because Dayton had yet to light up the scoreboard. On offense, the Minutewomen's best scoring chance came on a 45yd free kick that bounced in the box and almost over goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers. Rodgers tipped it over the goal post and UD subsequently turned away a UMass corner kick.

The domination continued to wear UMass down and after some pinball in the mixer, Stephanie Emory pounded a shot into the net from 12 yards out in the 34th minute. The rebound in the box put Dayton up 2-0.

Five minutes later, Colleen Williams notched her first and only goal of the weekend on a nice turn-and-shoot from 8 yards out to make the score 3-0 and pretty much salt the match away.

By halftime, UD dominated in shots 13-4 and corner kicks 3-2. The Flyers missed a bevy of other strong scoring chances in the first half as players continued to struggle finishing inside the box. All told, UMass was fortunate to only be down three scores.

The second half was equally uncompetitive. Dayton went to the bench early and began pulling starters off the field not long after the re-start. UMass offered little resistance however and continued to look inept in all areas of the field.

With the coaching staff inserting Alysha Mallon into the back line, that gave defender Allison Giner a chance to do some work up top. She made the most of her opportunity, scoring in the 68th minute on a well-earned effort to put the Flyers up 4-0. Receiving a ball down the right side of the box, Giner beat the charging goalkeeper at the near post with the dribble, and walked it in from point-blank range.

Substitutions were all over the pitch as 24 players saw the field. Dayton's subs gave a good effort and Maggie Hinkle made the most of her appearance by chipping the UMass goalkeeper to the near post from 15 yards out to make it 5-0 in the 83rd minute.

UD out-shot UMass 24-8 and owned an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Dayton finished off UMass with the most goals in any game this year, and polished off the final home weekend of the season with eight goals and just one goal allowed. After four A10 games (all at home), UD has out-scored the opposition 14-1. That's significant because Dayton does not play Charlotte or George Washington this year -- two teams that might have a fighting chance to tie UD for the regular season title. Goal differential could come into play and UD has done a solid job thus far of maximizing their chances by finding the back of the net.

Overall, Sunday's score was an accurate reflection of the run of play, though Dayton should have probably finished off 2-3 more of their jailbreaks. The usual running mates up top with Colleen Williams continue to find ways to miss the net. In limited duty, Giner looked dangerous and made her minutes count with a second half goal. Perhaps the coaching staff keeps Mallon in the back line and tries more of Giner in the offense.

It's hard to take more away from the match other than UD did exactly what they needed. UMass was awful for long stretches and didn't have a single player with the kind of speed to overcome technical deficiencies in their game. That's never a good combination when stepping up in class and hoping to compete on the road.

Dayton took care of business at home, but must finish what they started on the road with all five remaining A10 matches away from Baujan Field. Winning on the road isn't easy and most of remaining foes should provide better competition than the prior four A10 opponents. Nothing will come easy, and at times, Dayton likes to make it harder than it needs to be, but no other team in the conference is in as good of shape heading into the final two weeks of the season. Everyone understands that if UD wins out, they are A10 regular season champs (at the very least) and the probable #1 seed in the A10 Tourney.

The Flyers just need to continue to win. It's their best play as they look to fatten up every ounce of their NCAA resume'. Their next opportunity is next weekend in Philadelphia with matches against Temple and St. Joseph's.
