WSOC: Late Goals Give UD 5-2 Win Over Duquesne
Game recap:
http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28233
It is what it is. Plenty offense to get the job done. Questionable 50/50 challenges in the central third and defensive mistakes to keep us victims of our own sword.
I'll take the W though. Screw style points anymore. We're .500. Been a long climb back. Now we gotta finish what we started and run the table to close things out in our quest for the NCAAs.

VCU/ SLU played to a nil-nil tie tonight. GDub wins over URI in double OT. GDub is A-10 champ at 9-0.. Flyers now at 7-2 and VCU at 6-1-2. Not sure of the tiebreakers but VCU did beat us so they win the tiebreaker if we both end up tied.
Another typical match tonight for this year's women's team. We are easily the top scoring team in the league. We are also one of the poorer defensive teams.
It is so frustrating to see so many passing turnovers - especially in the central third and defensive mid.
Both Weigle and Pestell went down with injuries in the first half. We probably prevent at least one of the Duquesne goals if they had been on the field in the second half. Injuries did not appear serious from the terrace, but one never knows.
As we have known for some time, this season will come down to having to win 3 straight matches in the A-10 tournament. We will be the team feared most because of our high powered offense. We could also be a team to flame out in the first round because of our shaky defense. Defense usually wins these tournaments. For that reason I would give us maybe a 1 in 5 chance to win the tournament.

The only way we end up tied with VCU is if they tie Sunday and we lose. Win and the second seed is ours. Not sure it helps us as we don't know who ends up 6th and 7th.

I hope you are right about the injuries not being serious.

When you look at conference only stats, we are actually middle of the pack in defense. Also our average for the last 4 games is 1 GAA/game. That would put us just outside 2nd in the conference.
Also, generally speaking, teams that focus more on attacking are more likely to give up goals in transition which distorts the defensive numbers. Also, when a team has less players on the defensive line, it opens up transition scoring.
So the question is would you rather UD put more emphasis on defense (4-5-1 vs 3-5-2) which might save us a half goal a game (the amount we are behind the second place defenses) if it costs us a goal a game on offense? I know my answer.
This is all born out by the rankings of goal differential which closely mirror the standings.
What it comes down to is would you rather have a strong offensive team or a strong defensive team because rarely are teams strong at both (yes even the highly ranked teams).
None of this means we can't play better defensively (the first half Thursday was the best defensive half we have played all year - 0 SOG being the evidence) but we can improve offensively also and this is true of all teams.
