GM Recap
George Mason is an improved team from last year. Each game leading to the VCU (and the one after) are trap games. UD is expected to win, but the other team is up for the game. UD was up for the challenge.
UD showed poise and talent in the win. Did not shoot the ball real well. Some shots were down and back out. Balanced effort though made up for it. Many contributions. 17 assists on 28 baskets. Cooke and DD tied with assist lead at 4.
Stats of the night. Only 5 turnovers and 9 blocks. 20-0 run. Mason had 2 9-0 runs, but the 20-0 run was stunning! UD let down after that run. I know coaches say never let up, but realistically, it is hard to keep the petal to the metal after that run.
This game was very different than the Bonnie game. Much cleaner game. A lot of complaints about the officiating last game, but this one was not a rugby match. Bonnies are a better team, but they fouled a lot. UD might have gotten away with a few tonight on some of the blocks in the second half.
Defense needs some work. Archie singled that out after the game. Too many dribble drive fouls especially after the big run. Some of the blocks were actually a result of getting beat and then using long arms to block shots. Cooke and Williams get away with that a lot.
Mason shot the three ball well, but that seemed to be because UD doubled down low a lot. That surprised me. I thought Archie would have left Josh and Kendall to one on one defense in the post more. He did not.
Despite these comments about defense, when they were locked in, the turnovers and blocked shots led to a lot of points.
Mason is best rebounding team in the league so the -9 was not unexpected. But when you 12+ turnovers, that impacts your rebound margins.
I thought DD played a very good game even though he only had 1 point.
Crosby best game of his career. Lots of discussion about that elsewhere probably. I am happy for him. He came ready to play tonight.
Nice to see Josh play well. He pushed Sam Miller deep to the bench. Team is now more physical inside with Josh.
Guys made plays when they needed them. Fun game to watch. Not a nail biter.
Now, extract some revenge on Davidson for that loss two years ago.

Loss 2 years ago? We need to beat them 10 in a row to make up for that loss in 1969.

They definitely threw away a good 6-7 possessions in the 1st half when they were on the verge of really extending the lead by taking both really quick shots that they could have gotten with under 7-8 seconds left on the shot clock and just bad, forced shots..
GM is a pretty nice team overall...When Moore got his 2nd foul with just under 5 minutes left in the 1st half ,which was very very questionable as plenty of those type are when guys are scrambling after loose balls, that kept UD in the drivers seat...

Rollo I meant to post that last night but forgot. I thought the refs had a good day ysterday, and with John Gafney, who is a very good official, on the crew that's not a surprise. I actually thought the few missed/wrong calls favored UD more than GM and I made sure I commented to my wife when I thought GM got jobbed because I'm trying to be objective.
PS - My dentist had a very good day yesterday too.

Actually, I do agree, and I think part of it was because both teams played a generally clean game. So many games today involve players (and coaches) who make contact on a regular basis (often hard contact), and seem to dare the officials to call it all. That was not the case last night. Mason tried to play a much more fluid game, and as such, there was generally much better flow, and far fewer "hacks & whines". Much different than last Saturday's contest against the Bonnies, who seemed to try to grab & bump cutters as they made their way through the StB zone D.

The bench was great last night. We played our best stretch when Cooke was the only starter on the floor. Then we lost our momentum when the starters come back in. I found myself yelling at the TV, "put the bench players back in!"

He received a couple stitches in his face from the collision. Not sure if he had any concussion symptoms.

He had a cut just under his right eye, but was fine other than that. They showed him multiple times when he came back to the bench and you could read his lips telling everyone he was fine.

It appeared that when Archie noticed he was on the best, he asked him if he wanted to go back in. Kyle then showed him that he did not have on a jersey. With a minute to go, perhaps they did not want to pull out a extra one.
He did look mad. That intense mad that Kyle uses to shut down his opponent and make ridiculous break away lay-ups.

Totally agree and I was saying same thing! I think Pollard played too much considering how poorly he was playing. Josh seemed to be much more consistent last night; Crosby was electric and his athleticism was causing fits for Mason; Mikesell played strong in 2nd half; KD is KD need I say more? Esp. when Durrell's 3s aren't falling, KD is a much better option.
Funny thing about that lineup though...it wasn't too long ago that Mikesell and KD were starters, and Cunningham started the beginning of this year. So it's a solid lineup with Cooke out there. Crosby was just the total wild card last night

Good win last night and the main lesson that UD can take away is....don't let up...ever.
When UD is playing well on D, they can beat almost anyone. Busy hands and deflections let them get out in transition. They struggle in "Miami esque" games of slow down half court garbage. They get frustrated and aren't patient. When they get out in transition, everyone is getting theirs and everyone is part of the run outs in transition. These guys like to play that way and are very successful when the D is on.
Lesson learned...put your foot on necks and get that D going early and often.

Normally I'd agree with everything you said, they do have a habit of letting off the gas. However, in last night's game it seems the only reason the game turned the other way after 20 straight points is that the bench players that built that lead went back to the bench. Wasn't the starters best day from start to finish.

I believe the comeback started with the "2nd team" playing and continued after the personal change.

Correct. sort of.
The lead was 1 when Crosby, Mikesell and Cunningham subbed in. They built it to 21. It was 16 when they subbed back out (GM layup, Mikesell missed in lane, GM layup, Kyle turnover, GM makes one of two) Pollard, Williams, Cooke and Scoochie re-entered during the free throws and Schoochie immediately hit a three to push it back to 19.
So after that three the largest lead had been 21, it was then 19. The starters gave up 9 in a row after the Scoochie three.
In 3:08 of gametime sandwiching the play of the subs, the starters were outscored 18-3.

Man, it is a good day when we are debating if our starters were better or worse than our subs. I can't wait to see these boys in person Friday.

I saw this too as I was watching the game on my phone. At the time I was thinking Kyle had no jersey due to concussion symptom protocol. I assume no updates or anything on Kyle since the end of the game? I have been out of town and if it is mentioned on one of the other threads my apology, but 1988 posts have been made on this site since my last log in. Thanks

This was in a DDN article today:
“He turned his ankle right before he took the shot (to the head),” Miller said. “I think that’s what’s more painful than the shot. I think he’ll be OK as we get ready to go to Davidson.”

I am pretty sure they took his jersey because he had blood on it. Not concussion protocol.

Kudos to GM for playing scrappy and making a game of it. They are much improved and hopefully next year will make things more competitive, especially in the OOC.
Flyers are showing some depth and ability to close out and react well in many different ways. Still need to get after the boards better.

It did not go down to the wire, but there were some nervous moments in the second half that we were playing a team with a lot of firepower.
It took GM exactly 74 seconds to wipe out a second half 10 point lead with a 3, 3, and 3point play.
I skipped the nail and almost bit a finger off.

Kendall was questionable to play on Tuesday.
http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/spo...ZQMgSkFJFzzVP/
An excerpt -
" Staying healthy down the stretch will be key for Dayton, which suffered one scare in practice this week and another in the game Tuesday.
“Kendall (Pollard) was out basically for 48 hours with an ankle,” Miller said. “We weren’t sure he was going to play tonight. I didn’t think he was particularly good.”
Kyle Davis left the game in the final minutes after a collision. He returned to the bench at the end of the game but didn’t play again.
“He turned his ankle right before he took the shot (to the head),” Miller said. “I think that’s what’s more painful than the shot. I think he’ll be OK as we get ready to go to Davidson.”

“He turned his ankle right before he took the shot (to the head),” Miller said. “I think that’s what’s more painful than the shot. I think he’ll be OK as we get ready to go to Davidson.”

That explains some of Pollard sub par play. Pollard is not one to retreat. He will just keep bulldozing even with a broken track.
