Was coming here to post this and ask the question if that means he is officially gone (my expectation of what is happening) or is this an event in which you can play and return to college afterwards (highly unlikely).
Update: You cannot come back without receiving an exemption from the NCAA.

If he has interest in coming back down the road, he will have to petition the NCAA to reinstate him.

Friends, follow the continuing saga of "All My Flyers." Will Amzil find the pace he so richly deserves? Can R.J. find a team that wants 6 points a game? Will Mike and his Dad find true happiness? Can Richard find a more comfortable seat? Can anyone understand just what going to the P.I.T means? Will the boys get out of the hospital before the season starts. Will King Rolo regain his throne?
Stayed tuned next week--Same bat time-same bat channel.

This should come as no surprise. If it wasn't for COVID he would be out of eligibility. It's time for him to take the next step in life. Best of luck to him. So what exactly is P.I.T.?

Even if he doesn't get the feedback he wants, he has to petition the NCAA to have his eligibility restored and would likely have to sit out some number of games. Last year, several players did this and missed from 3-6 games.

The link to the PIT acceptance form. The invitation is sent to the player’s college coach.
https://www.portsmouthinvitational.c...e-form-flying/
According to this form, Camara hasn’t necessarily given up his extra year at UD. Someone needs to ask AG what his status is after this tournament. Maybe I missed it, but usually players post a thank you UD social media letter. Has Camara done that yet?

I just read the DDN news clip about this. He has not made a decision about next season yet. And a player petitioned the NCAA to return last year. Got a 3 game suspension, but was allowed to return. Will be interesting.

Camara has proven he's physically a fully grown man at the college level against top competition. If he could finish better around the rim and shoot the 3 better, he'd be in NBA conversations.
As a bonus, he definitely needs to improve his handle which is below average for sure, but that would be overlooked if you could combine his superior defensive ability, shot blocking at his size, rebounding, and overall athleticism with a guy who could be a moderate threat from 3.

Anybody who can play legit NBA defense at multiple positions and can hit a catch & shoot 3 @ 40% is a valuable commodity. Toumani doesn't have the latter, but that's a skill that (for some people) can be learned. Not sure about the former - he'd have to be there to find out if his defense can translate to the next level. He has the physical tools, which clears a hurdle that would eliminate the overwhelming majority of humanity and even the majority of college players.
I won't say never, but I will say it's unlikely that he plays in the NBA.

Teams in the European Union are restricted to two non-EU passport holders. I think he can carve out a pretty lucrative career over there. He’s got way more athleticism than a typical Euro big guy and brings some more things to the table than a usual stretch 4 they use

17 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal in 17 minutes, just in the first half for Camara. I would say he is off to a very solid start in Portsmouth and showing he belongs.

Strong performance from Dayton's Toumani Camara in his Portsmouth Invitational Tournament opener with 27 points, 8 rebounds. Has another gear athletically compared with most players here and showed good versatility making shots, rolling and taking slower defenders off the dribble

Camara has better overall NBA skills right now than 20% of the players in the association. He's simply an athletic freak with skills. The NBA is all about athleticism and ceiling, the skill(s) that he lacks can be learned and his defensive instincts are insane. The NBA game is suited for guys like him. I also think that he didn't or hasn't received the credit for being the vocal leader of the Flyers which speaks of his character and bball IQ. He's got a good chance of landing on an NBA team in the next two-three years and be a good contributor. I hope it works out for him. Imagine Obi and Toumani in the league together representing, Go Flyers!

Agreed. His primary issues--ballhandling, touch around the rim--can be improved and won't be as obvious when he's not a focal point of the offense.
I don't expect he'll be drafted, but if he can adopt an identity as a defensive stopper and above-average rebounder, and the shot continues to come around, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him carve out a role in the NBA.
I think his game actually makes more sense in the NBA than in Europe in that I think he could be a great peripheral guy but I think there's a ceiling on him if you want to run offense through him.

I could see Camara being a Robert Horry (15yrs, 4 teams, 7 rings) type NBA guy on a smaller scale.
Maybe play 10 years for 3 or 4 teams and win 2 or 3 rings.
Not an MVP, but a guy who other guys want on their team.

Camara reminds me of Andre Iguodala, and I can see him playing a role similar to Iguodala's on the GS Warriors championship teams of a few years ago.
All year long, I have felt that he is the most NBA-ready player on our team. I hope he continues to do well and get a shot at showing what he can do in the big league.

Fell off his point a minute average, you need to come back to UD one more year and work on your game TC!

Another solid outing from Dayton's Toumani Camara with 21 points, 12 rebounds. Has been the standout performer of the PIT so far. Just too quick and explosive for any big man to handle and has shown some nice versatility on both ends of the floor.

Not turning this into an AG thread, so please do not take this that way, but it is amazing how good he looks playing at a faster pace in a free flowing offense. He looks like a different player playing in the P.I.T.

I haven’t seen any of the games but I am wondering about the style of play in this event. Is it like G-league where there’s not a lot of D and not much teamwork or is it more structured like the college game? I’m guessing the former. Clearly these are guys on the outside trying to get a look from the decision makers. How much of what anyone does here can be translated up to the NBA level where beef and athleticism are king or back to the college level where structure and teamwork is a great equalizer.
I remember CW looking great in the G league but that ceased when he got called up.

Great “observation” even if you haven’t seen any games. The scouts know what they are doing and will know this. And as noted before, I want TC to return for 1 more year, so take my bias into account herein.

Does anyone know about how many guys from the PIT end of getting drafted in a given year? I know we've had guys over the years play in it, have any of them ever been drafted?

The 2023 Portsmouth Invitational Recap
The 2023 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament is in the books! Maxwell breaks down the players NBA front offices should be monitoring coming out of the event!
MAXWELL BAUMBACH
APR 18, 2023
The 2023 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament is now in the books! It was a fun, exciting weekend, filled with great games, surprise performances, and a few players truly solidifying themselves in the 2023 NBA Draft mix. Before we get into the recap, I want to lay out today’s format and the criteria I will be using.
Eleven players from last year’s event ended up signing what I’ll call a “substantive NBA contract,” either a two-way contract or a ten-day NBA contract, at some point in the last year. Those players were Jamal Cain, Quenton Jackson, Stanley Umede, Jeenathan Williams Jr., Jared Rhoden, Trevor Hudgins, Jamaree Bouyee, Jacob Gilyard, Darius Days, Tyrese Martin, and Cole Swider. Today, I’ll be focusing primarily on 11 standouts from this year’s event, blending both their 2023 PIT performances and prior track records, that I would be keying in on as an NBA front office. At the end, I’ll throw out a few other players who warrant consideration. Last year, 16 other players went on to sign some sort of NBA deal, be it an Exhibit-10 or non-guaranteed deal, so many of the players that didn’t make my cut are still very much in the mix.
1. Toumani Camara, 6’6.75” barefoot, 7’.05” wingspan, Dayton
Size, skill, and defensive versatility are king. Toumani Camara has all three.
He was hyper-productive out of the gate, scoring 27 points on 17 shots in his opening game. The 6’8” power wing was clearly in a different class than his peers athletically. He’s strong, he covers ground well, runs fast in transition, and flies off the floor. Over the course of the three games, he averaged 20 PPG, took 5.3 FT a game and hit 93.8% of them, grabbed 11 RPG, and tallied 1.3 SPG and 1.3 BPG on defense. Simply put, he was all over the court and made his impact felt in every way imaginable. Though he was shaky from three (3-for-18 on the weekend), Camara aggressively hunted his shot and the mechanics looked more seamless than they had previously. I was also impressed by how well Camara handled himself as a decision-maker, averaging 2.7 APG to 1.3 TOV. His passing still showed flashes of creativity as it did this past college season, but there was less unnecessary risk-taking. Playing without a true lead guard and alongside a post-up big man for much of the year at Dayton, Camara looked excellent with reliable set-up men and a more open halfcourt. His game as a roller and cutter should look even better on an NBA floor.
There’s no way around it—he needs to continue to be a more efficient three-point shooter. That said, Camara’s NBA-ready frame and physical tools, paired with his feel and motor may allow him to put together a meaningful career even if he reaches a shade below league average. He’s a firm Top 60 guy for me at this stage.

The big improvement with Camara this past season was his ability to finish at the rim with either hand. He struggled finishing his 1st season at UD.

As a bonus, he definitely needs to improve his handle which is below average for sure, but that would be overlooked if you could combine his superior defensive ability, shot blocking at his size, rebounding, and overall athleticism with a guy who could be a moderate threat from 3.

I think his handle was okay. However when trapped he made TERRIBLE decisions that morphed into very bad turnovers. At very bad times

There are only going to be 58 picks in this year's draft. The Bulls and another team violated the tampering rules, and both had their 2nd round picks taken away by the league.

I don't think Camara gets drafted, but I do think he gets signed to a NBA Summer League team with a chance to earn a 2 way contract or at least a G league spot.

Given the current NIL money and that draft projection, I think Holmes is better off returning to Dayton. Better chance to raise his profile. It's a lot harder to raise your profile in the G-League, which is where most 2nd rounders end up.

@Coach_Kee
Fortunate to have coached Toumani Camara in this year's Portsmouth Invitational. Should definitely see himself sneak into the Draft this year! Extremely talented and very coachable. It was a pleasure coaching him

Neither Holmes nor Camara make Bleacher Report’s top 50 NBA prospects pre-combine. But as with most projections, it’s an extremely subjective list.

Bleacher Report's 2 round mock has DaRon going to the
Pacers with the 31st pick, realize it's subjective.. more
and more of the sites I am visiting are now showing
both Holmes and Camara being drafted.... https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...nd-projections

That’s an old mock from January. More recent mocks don’t have him in the top 50.

Alot of these mock drafts aren't updated weekly or monthly...gotta be careful.
Here's one from May 12 that has Holmes at #51 - https://sportsnaut.com/nba-mock-draft/
This 5/12 update has Holmes at #23 - https://hoop-social.com/2023-nba-mock-draft/
5/14 update has Holmes #34 - https://www.tankathon.com/mock_draft
Camara not mentioned in any of the above.

In a disjointed and disappointing season, last year, I really was impressed with Camara. He has such a well-rounded game, and the defense was superb. I think he might have some potential in the NBA as a journeyman. But even if he does not make it to that level, I think he could have an outstanding pro career in Europe and make a lot of money.

I think he’ll end up being drafted and I’m cautiously optimistic he will stick. He can do little bit of everything and a lot of somethings. I think a guy with his combination of talent and work ethic is attractive to the NBA. He can help you now but chances are he is going to get a lot better.

To clarify, they’re saying he’s the 54th best prospect in this year’s draft. Going +/- 2 slots from the 54th pick, and barring trades (which will probably happen, but who can project those), he’d most likely wind up in Phoenix, Minnesota, Sacramento, Indianapolis, or Memphis. Whether any of those teams needs a 3/4 with the skill sets that Tou has to offer (decent shooter, good defender, good rebounder), I don’t know.

In case you're still trying to make the point that Camara was / is an NBA player who should have carried us to the post-season last year (along with the other 2-3 NBA players on our roster), it's actually the opposite point. These are the guys coming out next year who will be competing for Camara's position next year, and if he doesn't get consistently better, these are the guys who will displace him. Along with an entirely new crop of younger players he'll be competing against.
Camara is a superior athlete that has things you can't teach. I hope he improves his passing, ball handling, and shooting, and someday becomes an NBA regular.
The guy who was on our roster was not an NBA regular. That player doesn't exist yet.

I'd love to see Toumani get drafted. I have to believe even if he doesn't, some team will sign him and at least have him play in summer league, where he could subsequently earn a contract.

Would be interested to learn what is lacking in his game. The biggest thing I saw was ball handling. Beast on defense and the boards. Among the best defenders ever to wear the uniform. 3 point shooting improved. Good quickness.
His turnovers especially while dribbling and finishing around the rim were his biggest weaknesses.

He's total class act. I'm really rooting for him to make it to the NBA; I think he's not yet peaked.

Toumani worked out for the Hornets most recently, interview excerpt:
"When I was at Georgia, I really didn't have this identity. I really didn't know who I was or I didn't really know what I was good at. Going to Dayton, I got to change my environment and really understand who I am as a person."
Tomorrow for the Hawks.

The dreaded “Dayton University” appellation. But good press for Camara.

Pacers had Toumani back for another work out yesterday. The other team that had him twice was the Celtics. (They have the 35th pick). He's had 17 workouts.
Two more days...Go Toumani!

I checked out 6 updated mock drafts this morning and Camara was listed in 5 of them going anywhere from 36 - 60.

Camara was a unique talent at UD. One of the best defenders and rebounders to ever play for the Flyers. Especially defense. He could guard all positions on the court and was very physical in his presence.
His 3 point shooting improved as he played. He showed leadership.
We may never know the injuries that he played through as he and staff never discussed them.
I am rooting for Camara to be drafted and play in the NBA I hope he has a very successful pro career.

When Camara is drafted and interviewed; I expect him to conduct himself well in the interview. I look for him to act mature and professional. I look for him to “act like he has been interviewed before”.
This would be opposite to what we’ve seen on these interview shows in the past with draftees.
Actually, I’m not sure that he will be drafted high enough in order to be on that draft show. If I remember, they only show interviews of the first 20 or so, that are drafted.
The draft is Thursday, 06/22 at 8pm (EST) ABC/ESPN.

It's been reported that the Pacers are also interested in Obi. Wouldn't be cool if these two end up on the same team?
What's the over-under on the number of times UD would be mentioned in a game involving said team?

I’m thinking the over/under on such a game would be at least 15. And if the Pacers would pick up both Obi and Tou, I might actually pay for some NBA tickets in Indy.

John Hollinger of the Athletic had Camara ranked 45th. It is a pay site so I have only copied a small portion of the write up. This is a ranking not a mock. He put players in Tiers. Camara's Tier:
TIER XI: My favorite deep cuts
45. Toumani Camara, 23, 6-7 senior PF, Dayton
One of my favorite sleepers... progressing from a low-skill, undersized athletic five to a quasi-believable stretch four. ...very effective finishing in the paint his entire career His foul shooting is a worrying negative indicator... but stroke better from where it was as a freshman.
...isn’t an elite leaper... he still fills the stat sheet. His rebound rate was monstrous for a four... his 2.6 steals per 100 possessions was one of the best marks by a frontcourt player. ...as a switchable four who can hold his own defensively, his offense doesn’t need to be gangbusters to get on an NBA floor.
**************
Overall, the write up in its entirety is very positive. As a footnote, the other Toppin was listed in the same tier at #52.

I’m excited for Toumani Camara. I think he will get drafted. A Dayton player getting drafted is great. Benefits: for the player’s career, men’s basketball program, for overall university recognition in the marketplace, for fan appeal to be rooting for a winning successful program from player through staff and administration and future recruiting.

Even after the trades, at this point, the Pacers have the 55th pick, and they’ve worked-out Camara twice. I have a good feeling about this. I know a lot can change over the next 3-4 hours, but I still have a good feeling…

I think Camara gets drafted by Indiana and in a strange twist of fate, Obi also goes to Indiana in a draft pick for trade with the Knicks
