Red Scare - 2023 TBT
Coaches Gruden and Bonsu are back!
Today they announced the first three players to commit to this year's team:
Mikesell
Baby D
Josh Cunningham

I love being able to see the players from year's past play again. Can't wait.

I have attended every year they have played (except the Covid summer). So much fun.
If you can, donate to help them with expenses. Every little bit helps and it is very much appreciated!

Took the wife and kid last year to Dayton and got to see them myself a few years ago when they were at the Covelli center at Ohio State. It’s a great experience.

Today received this in an email for 1/2 price tickets (until May 7).
Ordering through UD saves the ticketmaster fees per ticket. Parking is added to ticket price so no need to mess with passes.
Prices very reasonable (IMO).
Team bench placement the same as UD games.
Dayton to Host a 2023 TBT Regional and Quarterfinal Game

This was popular and had professional leagues I’m guessing close to a decade ago. I loved watching it. Does the mean Trey won’t be playing in the TBT?

I am very worried about somebody falling, on the way down from jumping on one of the trampolines, and breaking their neck/back as they land, thus ending up with a spinal cord injury and being paralyzed.
This doesn't look safe at all to me.

Per Jablonski's recent column, Trey is 50/50. I'm betting he's out based on possibly having as many as 6 games in Vegas on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this weekend (3 games minimum).

Looks to me like major injuries just waiting to happen. What's next, add blackjacks and clubs?
I remember seeing an exhibition in high school where they used football helmets shoulder pads and big plastic bats.

Imagine that, people doing dangerous things to make a living...my father in law worked in steel mill for 45 years to feed his family and put his kids through college. During the fall you can watch 300 pound men run full speed and hit each other as hard as they can, for money and your entertainment.

It doesn’t take money to motivate daredevils. My brother has had over 90 broken bones. He’s peeled his skull cap back mountain climbing, shattered his shoulder blade motorcycle racing, and partially bounced when his parachute partially collapsed while skydiving. He was paid nothing.

Don't...lol...look up Slamball injuries on youtube...just saying. They're brutal.
That being said...Slamball is great! It's everything a 90s teenager who's into sports could ever want. Actual basketball + bud light daredevils + prison rules defense! Fine Sport Slamball!

Thanks, I forgot that each site has its own unique schedule. Red Scare plays at 8pm this Wednesday.
The two Wichita regionals will have completed their first round games, second round games, sweet 16 games, and elite 8 games before Red Scare has even played their first round game.

I always like the easy readability of Wikipedia pages. The Wikipedia page for the 2023 TBT has not been created yet.

Really wish Trevor Thompson hadn't switched sides to Carmen's Crew, we could really have used him.

This thing was over in the third quarter. Yeah, the Red Scare May the valiant come back and made it interesting, but India rising came out, ready to go. We were flat footed. Attendance tonight was 3261, which ironically is higher than seven of the 15 Atlantic 10 programs attendance average for the 2019–20 season.

Too small. No perimeter D. Forced offense or what resembled an offense.
If they want to advance they need some size and some more youth...size is more important. The officials let them play every year. Big and strong teams win.

My guess would be because he is 137 years old.
PS, don't correct me, it is a "Coming to America" reference.
I am pleasantly surprised nobody is calling for Joey's firing.

Well, Joey has made it into the tournament every year. And a first round loss is better than not playing at all.

If only qualifying for the NCAA tourney were as easy as paying an entry fee.

Moving forward it is. Where are the sharks with unlimited NIL funding?

I think most of the NIL fights are going to be among P5 schools as they have largely been up until now. A kid who wants to make money playing basketball in college probably isn't looking at UD in the first place, so I don't expect our position to change much, but there are lots of moving parts. You still have to play and win the games to make the tourney and all this bluster about the new proposed statute means nothing to me until it is actually passed and upheld in court, (there is that pesky provision in the constitution that says Congress shall make no law interfering in private contracts, and I sense that is going to be an issue, but knowing a law is probably unconstitutional has never stopped congressional virtue signaling before).

Value of non UD players?
From thr stats it looked like the only significant contributors were the ex Flyers. None of the “extras” amounted to a hill of beans.

TBT knocked down ticket prices with a 50% promo in Dayton regional. The worst case scenario handbook for a host institution is seeing their team exit in the first round. Its a lot of work and overhead to host events that most institutions wish not be bothered with. Certainly frustrating to see that overtime not get rewarded to the hosts or hometown fans.

Red Scare lead in rebounding 9-8 at the end of the 1st quarter. They got dominated the rest of the game.
Teams need to be big and deep. Red Scare was neither this year. Pacher is thin and plays on the perimeter. Mikesell is pretty strong, he can't be your primary post player.
CW playing would have helped, but I don't know if he would have been the difference in the win/loss outcome.
Although he finished with 12pts and 8 assists, Scoochie did not play a good 3/4 of a game. He came on late when the game was out of hand. Many bad decisions.
I was impressed with Chatman. He still gets after it on D and he showed more offense.
Baby D is Red Scares all-time leading scorer, yet he only attempted 5 shots. Wasn't aggressive. Deferred to Jordan and Scoochie. Baffling.

I am not a fan of the TBT, mostly because of the style of play.
The style of play allowed is closer to street ball, over the top with too much pushing and grabbing allowed. I like physical play, but it should start with moving your feet on defense instead of delivering body blows. TBT allows too much non basketball physical play instead of playing solid defense using footwork.
The style of play is much more streetball than college or NBA. Not as fun to watch.
I did not see the game Wednesday, but I saw Red Scare play last year and I thought they were outmuscled pretty badly by the Buffalo team.

Not that this matters, because I don't really care and it doesn't effect me.... but 1 million to a just the winner can't be that great motivation anymore for some of these players. In the early years it was big payday for a pickup tournament, now teams are more organized and much better.
Lots of self paid travel, organization, etc etc. Some is subsidized by various sources but still... A 2-3% chance of what 100k at most?

I agree. I was skeptical on this team when I saw the lack of bigs that signed up. Chris wright only signed up for morale and to put butts in the seat. Unless we can get some quality bigs to commit to this we won’t ever win the tbt. Still fun to watch former flyers though.
