Well he only had 1 the game before as well (in less min to be fair). I get that getting out on the break is what he excels at and something the Knicks (or any team) could/should take advantage of, but I would think you would stumble into a few rebounds if nothing else. Not every possession is a chance to get out and run, some of them need to be about gaining control of the ball.
Anyhoo, putting up decent offensive numbers is probably his best bet to work his way out of NY next offseason into a situation where he can play more min. Add 5 more rebounds to that stat line and I'll call it a monster performance, but for the time being, its an excellent offensive showing. I'm hoping for a few more showings like he had at the end of last season when given the chance.

He's at 32 just under 4 minutes to go.
Surprisingly, he's not the Knicks' leading scorer. They have 3 players with 25+.
IQ with 36
Obi with 32
Quentin Grimes with 27

3 Knicks players scored 30pts. First time for the Knicks since 1979.

Guess we should call Obi - Mr. April. His numbers for April this year and last year are All-star worthy.

That was kind of slick.
Back to the rebounding discussion from the other day, again he was low on rebounds, but some poster on a knicks message board made an observation/comment. I didn't watch the game (or really much of an Knicks games this season) so I can't really verify how much truth to this, but the poster commented that it was Obi's job to get out on the break and pull the oppossing PF away from the hoop on those shots. The combinaiton of Obi's speed down the court and the Knicks guards rebounding abilities made this a solid strategy.
And I guess that can make some sense, anyhoo nice to see Obi put up another huge offensive night. Why does it take Randle sitting out to allow Obi's offensive numbers per min to explode? Just a matter of having more time to get into the flow, or do things run that much different when Randle isn't playing (at all, not just the 12 min Obi was getting a night)?

Obi could have done this all year long if he was utilized properly and not parked in the corner and on a minute count. He will start and be an impact player if he is traded to a team where the coach lets him play.

These opposing April lineups are generally weaker lineups. Randle is better than Obi, but Obi can start in the league. I'm sure the Knicks have a weakness somewhere. They should trade Obi to fill that weakness.

Better? I'd say different, but not necessarily better, at least in terms of their length of service in the league. Also, you would have to wonder if Randle would be better had Obi say, landed on a different team and been starting since day 1. Imagine him with 3 years of starting experience.
Obi has weaknesses for sure, but he has superior athletic ability compared to most players his size.

If Obi has more than 4-5 rebounds in a game he's being used improperly. Last thing I want is him crashing the glass if he's more than a step away from the paint. His mission is to put the fear of God in the opposition on every missed shot by not rotating back fast enough.
Thibs has to cater to Obi's biggest strength and let him do what he does best.

The Knicks are the wrong team for Obi. The way that he is used there is a crime against basketball. Obi needs a "showtime" kind of running team that shares the ball. Does that exist in the NBA anymore? I really don't know anymore, as I have only watched some of the Knicks games to see Obi in the last few years. Other than that, I have not watched since the 90's. The NBA really sucks.

Obi is doing everything within his control. He is taking advantage of the opportunities that come to him to showcase his skill sets. He has worked hard to improve his 3-point shooting and it’s laying off. I’m confident he will do the same with other parts of his game. Hopefully that attracts teams wanting his services and a trade can facilitate. I would be surprised if Obi doesn’t love the Knick’s organization and his teammates. That’s been his MO every step of the way in his career. But Heaven help him, it’s past time to find a new address and advance his career. The guy can play at this level.

Gawd I hope Obi goes back to the bench for the playoffs, gets less than 5 minutes per game in the playoffs, and leaves in the offseason. It seems like the worst thing that could happen is for him to have some great postseason getting 20 minutes per game, helping the Knicks advance beyond expectations, and accidentally saving himself in NY and maybe savings Thibs' job.
Better to have a first round embarrassing flameout and GTFO of that situation.

April games don't always mean anything, especially against bad teams or teams resting starters for the playoffs. But, there was literally no comparison to the Knicks offense the other night vs when Brunson and Randle play It's like two completely different teams. Brunson or Randle is going to likely go 1:1 against their defender, leaving the rest of the offense to be mostly static. I'm not knocking it, the Knicks have exceeded expectations this year. But it's not a recipe for long-term winning. I can see why the Knicks wanted Brunson. When Randle gets shut down in the playoffs, like he has the past couple years, the Knicks needed another option who could play their style of offense, hence, Brunson.
I don't know if the Obi/Grimes/Quickley trio would hold up in playoffs. You need someone reliable you can absolutely go to in a must-score possession. But since the Knicks are hell bent on playing this way, the only option is for Obi to get traded. He will never thrive there so long as Randle is on the team, and there's little chance of Randle being traded. Thibs may have been glad to win the other day, but it's not the way he wants to play. He was simply forced to by Randle being out and sitting Brunson to rest his hand.
Obi's best bet is to get traded somewhere he can play 25+ minutes per game and get out in open space. As much as I hate the Warriors, he would thrive on that team. I'm sure there are others as well. And Obi is the best teammate because he doesn't demand a number of touches. He's the ultimate team player.

All the Knicks starters had a good +/-. It was the bench that was terrible.

Looking like Obi may be getting the start in game 1 on Saturday in Cleveland.
Randle only participated in non-contact drills on Thursday.

If true, then we'll finally get a chance to see how Obi plays in a pressure situation. If he plays well, he will only help his cause for next year and beyond.

Knowing Thibs, he'll push Randle as far as he can go, regardless of Obi. If Randle starts, he'll still probably play 32+ minutes.

I find the Randle injury intriguing. Thibs’ MO has been he pushes or just simply plays his players too hard/too much heading into the playoffs and they run out of gas. Randles injury sorta came at the right time. When he is ready to go, he will be rested. But like TXFlyerFan said above…will Thibs still screw it up, mismanage this and play him too much or too early before he is recovered?

Obi scores 9 in 12 minutes of game play. Snags 4 rebounds as well. Randle, as expected, played 34 minutes. Cavaliers gave up 17 offensive rebounds, and that, more than anything, led to their ultimate loss. That, and Eric Mobley couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Good grief Knicks. Passing to a teammate does not have to be only when you are in trouble.

Thibs also nearly got Randle killed by refusing to take him out of the game with it out of hand with 2 minutes left. He's really becoming the caricature of himself that everybody says he is.

The foul on Obi was BS. The Cavs player got it by his own player’s elbow. Obi’s elbow never got higher than his name on the jersey.

I don't think Obi had a good game, even with his 7 points. He was very lucky Osman missed all those threes he was trying to close out on. I get he was trying to help in the paint, but his defense was a little lax. He was not very aggressive either, although it's difficult to get into the flow of the game with a 6 minute stint and then sit for 1.5 quarters plus the half. They said last night that 68% of Obi's shots have been 3s. That is a crime and solely on Thibs for sticking him in the corner. Then, the Randle incident late in the game. Well, Thibs is a ridiculous coach and it shows. He tried to say Randle talked him into staying to work on his conditioning. Randle's conditioning is fine. Randle's problem is he always underperforms in the playoffs, as does Barrett.

I wonder how much the poll would have changed if (a) players had been allowed to vote for their own coaches, and/or (b) those conducting the poll had asked more than 55 players league-wide.

I doubt voting for your own coach would have changed much. I don’t think anyone would have in that they would not want it getting back to their coach if they said it. My guess is the pollsters took it off the table to ensure confidentiality and an honest answer.
The 55 players is a big enough sample statistically but we don’t know a lot about make up - veterans, guys in the league 3 years or less, how many played for the coach they voted for in the past etc. The thing that stood out was it wasn’t a close call. So maybe it would have narrowed the margin some but it also could have widened it if more players were asked.

Thibs the worst coach and Randle the 3rd most overrated player. What a wonderful situation for Obi.

Had the game on. Watched as I worked on some other things…so didn’t see everything. But I did see Randle miss 3 of those corner 3 shots as he hung out in the corner. Obi hit his one attempt. To Randle’s credit…he is passing the ball these days. That was not the case the last 2 years.
And, Brunson just doesn’t miss shots in the paint. He drives and puts up those floaters like nobody’s business. And if that gets shut down he just steps back on a jumper. Money every time. He is one heck of a point guard. Give credit to ownership/management for bringing him in. And as much as I am not a fan of Thibs, I believe it was long time family/personal ties that got him to NYC.

New York now lead the series 3-1. Obi in at crunch time of the 4th quarter. The ball just moves better with him in. Played 20 min 5 points, 8 rebounds and 1 assist, +11. Post game credited Thibs with benching Randle. Took Obi out with about 40 seconds left. He got a nice ovation.

Very nice all around game for Obi today. Just imagine if his teammates would pass the ball to him a little more. Today Hartenstein set several perfect screens for Obi and he was wide open in the corner for threes. The guards refused to kick it out to him and the one time they did, Hartenstein was called for a moving screen. The announcers even mentioned how Hartenstein had set many perfect screens for Obi to get a pass and shot off. Also, late in the 4th quarter there was a perfect screen Obi set on a pick and roll, but guess what? The guard did not feed him the ball for an easy dunk.

It's too bad Derrick Rose fell out of the rotation. He seemed to find Obi more than the other guards.

Randle looks like he only half-cares when playing for the Knicks. He slow-jogs everywhere. He rarely helps on defense. He never appears to be giving maximum effort. He gives off "Too Cool to Try Hard" vibes.

Step one is to get him time on the court, the trust will come from there. I was super happy to see that Thibbs left him in at the end with the outcome still in the balance. It looked to me like Randle was not right, he was standing around with his hands on his knees alot and I don't think I saw him run up the court once. Not sure if he tweaked something or if he is just the kind of player lets who his whole game go to he!! if he is having a poor shooting performance.
If nothing else Obi showed that he can do what the team needs him to do, (5 offensive boards and 8 total, and he made several hustle plays in the final 7 minutes or so that helped the Knicks keep control). I have never been a Knicks fan but I am rooting hard for them just so Obi can keep playing.

I don't think you are wrong but he is also likely to be All NBA this year so I don't think Obi is going leapfrog him any time soon.

The NYK can eliminate the Cavs with a win tonight. In 6 2Q minutes, Obi went 0-2 but had a rebound, an assist and this steal:

So if you rarely watch the Knicks anymore getting sick of seeing the same old same old from Thibs and Randle, you might want to start paying attention again.
Flipped the game on just in time to see Randle hurt his ankle again with a couple minutes left in the second quarter.
Obi has put up 12 points so far in 8 minutes of the third quarter. This could be the opportunity for Obi we have all been hoping for!

When Obi plays with Mitchell Robinson, I think that is a good combination for the Knicks. Those guys have skills that compliment each other. One excels in the areas that the other is weaker.

And after helping the Knicks expand the lead up to 18, Thibs sits Obi the 4th qtr and the Cavs tried to make a comeback. I think they had it down to 6 late. The real MVP of the entire series may have been Mitchell Robinson. He simply dominated Mobley and Allen. Dude had 11 offensive rebounds yesterday. Cavs, in Rollo's words, were totally sac-less.

If you are referring to discussions you and I have had, I have never said he can only produce in late season meaningless games. What I said was using late season meaningless games to extrapolate what his stats would be if given more playing time (or "starter's minutes" is the term I recall being used), is not good science in my opinion. I have continuously expressly acknowledged that with more minutes his stats would improve.

I don't know how serious Randle's injury is, but considering he re-injured the same ankle that kept him out of the lineup at the end of the season, I think his dependability for the rest of the playoff is very much in doubt. With the game well in hand, it seems prudent to me that Thibs would take Obi out and not risk getting him injured and jeopardizing any chance the Knicks have to continue to advance in the playoffs.

I was annoyed that Obi didn't play in the 4th quarter and hadn't considered this. I was able to convince myself that winning the series gives him at least 4 more opportunities and I agree that while he seemed to be moving well after the game, who knows what Randle's availability will be. You have to think that even if he is healthy enough to play, his minutes will be limited and that Obi would absorb most of those.

Maybe, but he played Josh Hart 42 or 43 minutes and Hart seems to be pretty integral to the Knicks, especially with Grimes out. I think in his heart, he still believes Obi's defense is a greater liability than his offense is a plus. The fact that he left Obi in when Randle was struggling the prior game is the outlier.

They were probably referring to this year's team being the NYK "team of the decade" since the Knicks have had one playoff appearance in the last 10 seasons and they lost 4-1 to the Hawks.

“Russian Disinformation Campaign.” I love this line. People don’t realize what this means. So, many years ago, I may have had a close friend who was unwittingly dating a KGB agent. He was in the US. His back story was phenomenal. Totally fabricated. He had newspaper clippings from an event that never occurred in a city that never existed. They knew how to spread disinformation without the benefit of the internet!

Obis defensive reputation has always been at odds with his defensive metrics. Even in the playoffs so far he's Top-10 on defense according to the computers.

I saw most of the last game and was not disappointed with his defense. It's an improving part of his game, IMO. In college he was mismatched with trying to guard the likes of the national champion Kansas center at the time. In the pros, you don't put him on a center. He typically gets a very long 4, like himself. He does have lateral movement issues, but he has become more active on D, IMO. His strength is probably his ability to get steals that turn into breakaway dunks. He moves on offense and defense and disrupts passing lanes with his length. Randle, although he has great strength, tends to stand around as a spectator on defense. Obi helps on defense a lot. He is in motion all of the time. He plays team defense.

I don't watch any NBA because, well, I choose joy.
But it's really not fair to watch a single player. If you do you'll be left with the impression on every possession that he's not a good defender. The offensive players are too good, and the referees whistles too favorable to the offense, to ever think "that guy is a great defender."
The nuance comes in making a guy take a shot just slightly different from the one he wants, and then hope. He loves a 14' pull up from a 45 degree angle, you made him take a 16' pull up from a 35 degree angle, and his % fell just slightly. You rock! But he's still going to get a good shot off.

Obi has definitely played himself into a stronger contract position. And in the Miami series has more chances to shine again . There are some doubts on radio and local sports show about Randle and his ankle. Gosh, if he can't push off, turn quickly or get any lift he's either not playing OR limited to 12 to 15 minutes, as he did in 2 of the games.
Really great opportunity for our man child favorite son Obi here! Let's Go Knicks. Let's go Obadiah!!!

You can watch the last two minutes of the game and you won't miss anything, (unless you are specifically watching to see a guy who plays in the 2nd qtr and later 3rd, early 4th). Agree with your defensive observations. It looks to me like most of the time Obi is playing a zone down low with responsibility to close out to the corner on a shooter. If you just watch him it sometimes looks awkward but I have learned it is because he is constantly looking to adjust his position based on what is going on around him. I am a firm believer that if you like what the metrics say, the metrics are never wrong. So, all hail the best playoff defender in the NBA, (or most efficient or whatever).

Really great opportunity for our man child favorite son Obi here! Let's Go Knicks. Let's go Obadiah!!!

His contract situation is set at least for next year. The Knicks have a team option per the CBA. The following year and going forward from there, he can get whatever the market will give him.

The NYK already picked up Obi's $6.8 million option for next year. He will then be a restricted free agent and the qualifying offer will be $9.170.000.

Yes, there's that. I mean his trade and future contract value. Because his value Dec 1st and now is much different. I suspect many GM'S NOW realize this. Seeing him in a second playoff situation plus end of season performances when Randle was out. There has been more data and eye test performances to realize what we all know about Obi.
The guy's a Winner!

Agree with all. Hopefully it also earns him more trust with Thibbs and therefore more minutes in more scenarios, like playing along with Randle. Eventually the Knicks will have to do something. With the crazy salaries in the NBA I can’t imagine the qualifying offer won’t be exceeded. The Knicks may still have the right to match but you’d think they would rather trade Obi (or Randle) while they can get max value.

Obi is now 4-11 from 3. But the Knicks have only made 6 3s. Obi has 4 of those. People gotta step up and make shots. To be honest Obi’s 3s have kept them in the game. He was on the bench in the 2nd when the Heat made their run to cut it from 12 to 5 before half. In the third it’s just cold shooting by the Knicks. Down 6.

A lot of Obi’s missed 3’s can be attributed to the amount of consecutive minutes he played. Obi played hard on both offense and defense. If Thibs would have rotated his minutes better the outcome for the Knickerbockers would have been much better.
