It was an historic day yesterday not just because of weather or collegiate signings, but for the first time, an All-World U19 (Junior) football team beat the best of the USA high schoolers, most of whom had long committed to college programs. Many of the World Team play on Club Teams back home (no HS varsity, JV, Junior High, 7-8th grade, CYO, Pop Warner)
The game in Austin, TX started about 6pm so Europe could see it about midnight. It was televised by CBSports. Europlayers website noted early on that it was the first time a World team ever had the lead in a game. After extending the lead, the US boys made a furious comeback but were just short with the World winning 35-29. Last year it was USA 21-14 and in 2009 it was USA 19-0. (see a trend?)
This is not to say that football outside America is better, only that it is growing & improving. I think the three Flyers who signed in Europe will spread what they learned in the Dayton football program as will others who signed to play & help coach the junior teams. New history is always happening, just wait for tomorrow!
And if you want to read about the game from a slightly different perspective than CBS or ESPN, here's one:
