At St Louis 2017

Dayton puts its 3-0 Hermann Stadium record on the line Thursday evening at 7pm local time (8pm East). Dayton owns a 9-2-2 overall series record against the Billikens. However, all three of the matches played in St Louis were 1-0 decisions in favor of Dayton.

There is a web stream offered for this game. Your device must be "flash" enabled. For ipads, I recommend downloading the puffin browser before subscribing, because it is flash compatible, while safari seemingly just can't handle the tech.

A completely different Dayton team than we've seen this year will have to take the field and compete, otherwise this could end up a slaughter. Something like the team that showed up vs SJU in last year's A10 final. Saint Louis is a full step and a half above our pay grade right now. Hoping for the best obviously, but I just cannot envision us getting a result. Not with the weaknesses we're trying to hide. I suspect the game stats are going to be uuuuuuugly. Sloo has very speedy forwards that out-run back-line players for unimpeded challenges on the GK -- kind of like how Ashley Campbell out-legged back-line players for balls. If our defensive shape is not perfect, we're in trouble. And we must have Pestell in the lineup. And can Alexis get any meaningful touches in a game like this? That's been the crutch all season -- against suspect defenses. Against the good ones its been a dried up desert.

A very fortunate 1-1 tie with SLU tonight. We scored first but gave up a goal a few minutes later. We looked really gassed and were holding on by our fingertips towards the end of regulation and OT. Johns had a couple big saves to keep it tied. Did not think either side played particularly well. SLU did not seem as good as one would expect given their 11-1-1 record coming into the match. No Pestell again. All that being said, a draw on the road against SLU is a good result.

As predicted by Chris, stats were tilted heavily for the Billikens. It feels good to nonetheless get a result where the Bills came in 11-1-1 overall, and 5-0-1 at home. Despite the stats tipping so heavily in St Louis favor, Dayton managed to grind out a point, which will be critical for tiebreakers and playoff seeding. You might think a point is just a point. However, with half the season gone, this was a critical match.

Look out now. Sunday's opponent St Joe's will be desperate coming in with a 1-3-1 record and lots of hard luck. The Hawks are the only A10 team that have put up any goals on La Salle so far this year, and they play a physical brand of soccer. They also play on kryptonite turf. Expecting a good contest and it's important to set the tone early and settle in for 90 minutes of intense scraps.

heavy rains today made playing a little tougher than normal which might explain why SLU didn't seem to dominate like a 11-1-1 team they are. Gassed as both teams struggled through the thick grass making it slower than normal.

Johns was unbelievable in goal, saved our bacon several times.

Is Pastell injured, couldn't see her on sideline.

Thought we did not play good or smart soccer. Poor passing, players with their heads down kicking blindly into space and giving up needless possession. Poor service in the attack. Not enough possession. Nobody with a big enough foot to clear balls to safety out of the back line and avoid the short pick-off counter.

Still, as suspect as I thought we played, we got the result we wanted. SLU could have easily scored three goals. So like Mason and VCU, we ended up scratching a result out of three matches we were moderately or completely outplayed. For better or worse that's a bright spot.

Sooner or later though we have to start playing well and not just dodging bullets and hanging on with fingertips. As others said, Sloo did not look that impressive. In any other year, the Flyers probably truck them 3-1 based on what I saw. But maybe Sloo was just not on their best game either. Maybe we had something to do with that as well, but they were very sloppy at times too even when we provided little pressure on the ball.

Kellett was driving Golz crazy. He tried her at defense and had to pull her. Tried her at mid and had to pull her. She had so many errant passes and dis-possessions he ran out of spots to hide her. Thought LeRoy had the best play in the central third -- at least she could hold some players off the ball. Collie's name was hardly mentioned. She disappears into the shrubs way too easily and lets the game take place around her instead of being a focal point. Kiehls touches still few and far between. Every moon ball chip we throw forward might as well just be considered a turnover. Thats not service, thats slop.

Merritt deserves praise for filling in for Pestell. She doesnt give us any attacking push from the back or the same speed/recovery, but she does provide a bigger body and more physicality. Nobody can replace Pestell but Merritt has done whats been asked of her the last two matches.

The team is hanging in there and scrapping some points out of matches they are outclassed in. That takes some resolve. I said in the beginning this wouldnt be a style points season. Are we getting better? I just don't know. But, last night was our best result of the season in spite of everything. You are what your record says you are and right now I see us still on the inside looking out as far as an A10 Tourney bid.

The Fieldturf kryptonite looms however at SJU. Its like Dayton starting the match down 1-0. If we get another result (tie/win), I think this 2-game road trip has to be characterized as a complete success. How you look is less important than whether you get points. The look test still bothers me, but 1-0-1 or 0-0-2 would trump that easily.

For some reason too many of our players seem to back off going head to head for loose balls. We did have more fouls but not smart fouls. We are not playing like a mid season team. Too often not on same page. But a tie is better than a L.

St Joe's will define this team going forward, do we concede the turf or conquer it.

When the foul disparity is as large as it was last night, its usually a good indication that the team with the exponentially more fouls is being caught out of position or is late to the ball and having to foul to slow the game down and give them a chance to re-position. Thats pretty much what was happening from my chair.

The same applies to basketball...but don't tell anyone because we all know it's the refs that suck, not the players!
