The A-10 season begins with Duquesne vs. Xavier and Dayton vs. Cal Poly will get underway not long after. Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham, George Mason, and SLU all will get 2 matches in on the first day. Davidson on the other hand, won't even play their first match until early Saturday. Every team in the A-10 is playing on ROAD/NEUTRAL matches all weekend, but La Salle stayed fairly close to home with their matches still taking place in eastern Pennsylvania. 3 teams start on the road in the SEC. George Mason will be hosted by Georgia, VCU will be hosted by Texas A&M, and GW will be hosted by Tennessee. On Tuesday, we get 3 A-10 home matches!

There are plenty of interesting matches this weekend. I will obviously be very interested to see if Dayton can get wins against Cal Poly and/or Northern Illinois. Both of Dayton's Friday matches are huge chances to impress while Dayton is receiving votes. Some of the other matches I think could be exciting are VCU vs. Texas St., GW vs. Wofford, La Salle @ Bucknell, Duquesne @ Bowling Green, and Fordahm @ New Orleans. The matches on Saturday don't jump out as me as much, but Rhode Island vs. Valpo, VCU vs. Sam Houston St., SLU vs. UTRGV, and Davidson vs. Loyola Md. look like some of my favorites.

What are everyone's thoughts as we are only about 2 days away from college volleyball?

NIU just posted a write-up for the weekend tournament. There will be video for the 3 NIU mathces, but only stats for the other matches. Their video is considered "Premium Content". It looks like you can pay $6.95 for a 24 pass.

If you're planning to travel to the NIU event, Friday is move in day for their students so check the VB write up. It tells you where to park.

I also found it interesting NIU holds an 8-1 record against Dayton but it is from the distant past. Last time we played was 1998. Not a lot of teams hold a winning percentage against Dayton like 8-1.

Tomorrow is a monster day for this year. Two wins and we are off to a great start. Two losses and it could be a bummer. Poly and NIU are both quality programs. Worried a bit about injuries.

We could easily win or lose both matches. But can we win both w/o Petey?

If Peterson is out today...it's our deepest position experience-wise. Here's how it plays out for the OHs. Sloan playing 6 rotations. Bruns playing OH2 for the front row 3 rotations. Maggie coming in to serve and play DS for the backrow 3 rotations. All of those players have a year or more of doing that.

Brooke plays Rightside OH. I do not know her backrow skills, but she played 6 rotations in high school and has been working at setter over the spring and summer so she's had some time in the backrow.

If healthy, Peterson will be a candidate for A10 POY. So her absence will be felt. But experience and depth-wise, if Hubacek is out, it impacts this first. Weekend more. Albarran will play DS and she got some experience last year in that role. She could sub in for Brooke if needed. Otherwise she subs in for one of the MBs. If we need two DSs for RS and MB and Hubacek is also out, we probably go with one of the two freshmen setters as DS. Both have good backrow player reputations, but no experience at the D1 level.

Weve got hitters I'm comfortable with at the net. It's the backrow rotations that I'm worried about if both Jamie and Laura are out.

Weaver is also listed on roster -- and she is NOT going to play per NCAA rules.

The majority of Week 1 is over here are some of my thoughts:

DAYTON and VCU:
Both teams were able to get a couple of decent wins. Dayton got a road win against NIU and a neutral win against High Point. VCU got a win against Sam Houston State (last years Southland Conf. tourney runner-up) and swept Texas State (Sun Belt semi-finalist). VCU's first two sets against Texas State were close 25-23 and 30-28, before the rams finished the 3rd quickly 25-12. Dayton and VCU both lost to a strong opponent (Cal Poly and Texas A&M) respectively, but their wins make them look like A-10 front runners.

SAINT LOUIS:

The Billikens struggled losing every match of the weekend. Losses to #10 BYU and #21 Ohio State were kind of expected given the loss of Danielle Rygelski. Apparently UTRGV is no slouch either. Winning a set against a ranked Ohio State team is encouraging and they took one of the sets against BYU beyond 25. Senior Lauren Levernz led the Billikens hitting 0.369 for the weekend with 1 SB and 6 BA. Freshman OH Maya Taylor played in the 2nd and 3rd matches and recorded a hitting percentage of 0.237. Saint Louis's serve was not a factor, they only earned 4 service aces over the weekend. It was a rough start, but if SLU can win a set from Ohio State they are probably still a big threat to win the conference.

RHODE ISLAND and DUQUESNE:
Both RI and DUQ are expected to finish in the top 6, but did not win a set during their opening weekend. The schedules were tough. Xavier, Notre Dame, and New Mexico State have respected programs so some of this was expected. Duquesne looks closer to being competitive since they reached the 22 points in 4 sets over the weekend while Rhode Island only achieved that once. The RI rams look like they are still figuring out their lineup since 14 of their players made it onto the stat sheet. The RI rams also need to work on the serve receive and pass. They had 21 service errors in the 9 sets while Duquesne only had 14. The biggest bright spot from these two teams was Duquesne freshman OH Maria Mosbacher. Maria played all 9 sets and tallied a 0.274 h% against what was clearly strong competition.

GEORGE WASHINGTON:
GW played fairly well in my opinion. I though the Wofford match would be a toss-up and GW came away with a hard fought victory. (28-30 24-26 25-22 25-17 15-5) Wofford won the first two very close sets, but GW picked up momentum and finished leaving no doubts in the 5th. Freshman MH Callie Fauntelroy had a very strong NCAA debut hitting 8/11 with no errors for a h% of 0.727 and 2 BA. Against tougher competition, GW only let one set get out of hand dropping the 2nd to Tennessee 25-9. GW played close to Western Michigan the whole match losing 19-25 26-24 25-23 25-20. I think the Colonials are off to a good start and I expect to see improvement from this team.

DAVIDSON:
The Wildcats had a come from behind win (24-26 25-22 22-25 25-18 15-12) to beat (and in my mind upset) Appalachian State. I thought Davidson lost a lot from last year and would struggle early on, but they are 2-1 to start the season because they also cruised to a 3-0 win over Loyola Md. Setter Mason Rooney provided 62 assists in the first weekend AND 39 kills. Freshman MH Ellie Crosley deserved some consideration for Freshman of the week. Ellie hit 0.372 for the week and also provided 4 solo blocks and 4 block assists. That is a very nice all around game for a freshman middle.

FORDHAM:
Clearly a good weekend for Fordham. They were the only A-10 team to win all of their matches. Fordham won the match against Alcorn State easily and fought hard to get a road win against New Orleans. If you go back to 2015, both Fordham and La Salle lost to New Orleans in the non-con, so this road win is pretty good for the Rams. Sophmore RS Olivia Fairchild and freshman OH Mckenna Lahr were reliable options in the pivotal road match hitting 0.294 and 0.283 respectively. I would imagine having good options on both sides of the net helped to stretch the defense of the privateers. Junior OH Breanna Jones struggled at the net but added 3 services aces.

LA SALLE:
The Explores earned two victories and almost a third despite using two middle hitters with little (Jr. -Maya Barton) or no (Fr. - Reilly Lowe) experience. La Salle starter from last year, Katherine Edgington (102 sets and 0.231 h% in 2016) may be out with an injury given how much success she had last year. La Salle was outhit by Bucknell 0.272 to 0.121, but the Explorers battled on the road and took their first match to 5 sets. Bucknell holds a 7-0 record against La Salle since 2006 but by taking 5 sets on the road it was La Salle's best performance in the 7 matches. Maya Barton settled down in match 2 against Iona to be 6/9 with no errors at the net. Setter Kathryn Wood swung away tallying 7 kills in addition to 33 assists.

GEORGE MASON:
George Mason only has one win at the end of the first weekend, but they played schedules that were relatively more challenging then their peers. I thought the only winnable game in the bunch for GM was against Presbyterian, and they won that fairly easily. GM may be slightly better than I anticipated. Sophmore MH Katrina Santos was good in their match against LIU Br. hitting 0.346 and senior OH Jordan Glass was good in the final match against Presbyterian hitting 0.240. Pihla Jarvenpaa (Fr. OH from Finland) blocked well. Pihla had 4 block assists vs. LIU Br. and 5 block assists against Presbyterian.
