Was at the match today. In a word, we played terrible. I think even the players and staff would own up to it. And I dont understand why because we were in terrific form leading up to the tourney.
We passed the ball as often to the feet of GW players as we did our own. Too many players trying to take on multiple defenders 1v2 and 1v3. Our tempo was slow, our ball movement was slow, our touches were VERY sloppy, and we had some real gaffs that almost cost us. Worst part is our offense was almost non-existent and generated very little in the way of scoring chances other than one nice tip save necessitated by the Colonial GK. But on the other side, GW generated few good chances either. GW had 60/40 possession in this game but offense both ways was at a premium. It was quite boring to watch to be honest and GW did not overly impress with their on-field talent. We should have the goods to dispatch them.
Jonas getting injured in the first half and not re-appearing had little to do with things. We were sloppy and lethargic even while he was out there and he too was largely ineffective. We tried to get too cute and fancy with touches instead of just keeping it simple with fast tempo, wall passes, off-the-ball runs, etc. Everything we did seemed in slow motion. Just switching balls weak-side seemed like a 5-step process. This was my only in-person game all year so I can only judge based on ESPN+ streams to compare it against, but we just didn't play well today and GW deserved to advance. Id say of the three UD olympic sports results today this was by far the most disappointing.
