Because that’s when I was in school and Don Donoher. The legend.

The concessions guy who came up with the brilliant idea of adding multiple beer stands with real beer, not just Bud Lite.

But if any of these take away from parking, I am out!

A lot of people seemed opposed to the idea of retiring Obi's jersey, but are now talking about statues for players that did not win NPOY. This is such a weird fan base.

That said, I second Academic Fraud/Hazing Lady.

Is she STILL there every Friday? When I worked at NCR a group of guys and I used to run at lunch in the early 2000’s. We stopped and talked with her one time. I don’t recall the details but she was adamant she got screwed...I seem to recall it was a grade dispute? I thought it was academic fraud?

If they were to do a statue, this would be a great idea. I would make it three generations since I know there are many of those and probaly a few 4 as well.

For Chris and Steve, I hope to see Chris' memorial reinstalled. and a similar one for Steve, in the renovated Arena. I am disappointed it hasn't already been done.

Ok, going out on a limb here, but there probably needs to be a statue of Beth Flach somewhere in the mix. She is responsible for making sure every one of the current day players listed above was on the court in the first place.

Gotta be one of Velvet. All-time leading scorer. Put a whole team on his back to reach the 1983-84 Elite Eight. Passed-up a shot against DePaul so that The Shot could happen. Yeah: gotta have one of Velvet.

By decade?
60s: Don May
70s: Davis or Smith or Paxson?
80s: Velvet
90s: Negele Knight or Ryan Perryman?
00s: Brian Roberts over Chris Wright
10s: Scoochie Smith if it's not too early to give Obi the 20s

Since Knight only played 3 months of the 90s, you gotta give it to Perryman since there's a question. Same would apply to Obi in the 20s but I have a feeling there won't be a question when all is said and done.

I'm Good with Perryman

He was the Boss of the Boards. Best pure rebounder in Dayton history with challenges from
Don May and Roggenburk.

This is a little out there, but ... You know how at the end of warmups, Obi would jump super high for a dunk, and the rest of the guys would jump so they were all in the air and landing at the same time? ... How bout a multi-generational piece -- the centerpiece is Obi midair for a windmill dunk -- but surrounding him, all starting to jump, are Don May, Paxson, Chapman, Negele, Roberts, Scoochie, etc, etc.?

For something like this, you can't punish a player for having a career that straddles a decade boundary. Knight's peak was Spring 1990, and he isn't going to beat out Roosevelt in the 80s in any case. I like Perryman better personally, but Negele is held in pretty high regard by many.

Well, you're not punishing him for straddling the decade, you're "punishing" him because the 7/8th of his career that he played in the 80s comes in at best 2nd to Velvet and if you moved the 90s back 3 months, he still wouldn't compare to Velvet. You want to be most fair, we need to double the categories to add players who crossed decades.

And punishing for when they played is all part of this kind of ranking. Paxson, Smith and Davis are each being punished because they played in the same decade as each other. Finkel because he played in the same decade as May.

Negele played 1/8 of his career in the 90s, I think it's a stretch to say he should be 90s because he wasn't good enough to beat out Velvet for the 80s where he played 87.5 percent of his career.

So let's do a straddle list.
60s-70s George Janky/Ken May/Tom Crosswhite(take your pick).
70s-80s Mike Kanieski,
80s-90s Negele Knight,
90s-2000s Tony Stanley,
2000s-2010s Chris Wright/Johnson(I say Johnson),
2010s-2020s Obi

CW did quite a bit to hype up the program, but Brian Roberts was the man and did things playing positions he wasn't supposed to play.

on the straddle decades list,
good research first of all, know that
took time...

why do I get the idea that Richard
Montague crossed decades with Mike
Kanieski? thought maybe they were
on the same team, poss 79/80 and
80/81, something like that....

remember a game against DePaul
when Montague got a plaque for
1000 pts/500 rebounds, and Mark
Aguirre left the Depaul huddle to
come over and shake his hand,
gave him a hug... crowd appreciated
the gesture...

that would of been a darn fine front line,
with those two...

Montague was a Flyer from 1977-81, so he was a “straddler” just like Kanieski, who was 1 class behind Montague. And they did make for a formidable (if slender) pairing on the front line. A couple of class acts, too, who represented the university and program well.

thanks, I thought my memory was
recalling it right... Kevin Conrad was
a guard... Jack Zimmerman 1 of those
years, not real sure about that, just a
guess there...

Actually, the only research I did was 90s-2000s to get Stanley, the rest was from memory. That's why I didn't mess with 50s-60s, memory doesn't go back that far and I didn't want to research it. But now I did and the best I can come up with is Frank Case or Stan Greenberg. I prefer Greenberg since he was a close friend of my Dad's.

Richard Montague was in one of my classes at UD and almost never missed class. I always remember that.

why do I get the idea that Richard
Montague crossed decades with Mike
Kanieski? thought maybe they were
on the same team, poss 79/80 and
80/81, something like that....

remember a game against DePaul
when Montague got a plaque for
1000 pts/500 rebounds, and Mark
Aguirre left the Depaul huddle to
come over and shake his hand,
gave him a hug... crowd appreciated
the gesture...

that would of been a darn fine front line,
with those two...
I remember Montague joining the team the same year as another highly anticipated freshman forward and thought Kanieski also. But looked back and realized it was Jim Rhoden who I was thinking of not Kanieski. Rhoden averaged 10.6 a game with 5.7 Rebounds and 2.2 assists his freshman year and stood out ahead of Montague. But Rhoden quit and went back to work on the family farm or something. Really puzzling as he would've been a very good player if he'd stayed.

Not sure he’s deserving of a statue, but glad to see some love for Mike Kanieski who is often left out of these discussions.

He is overlooked for sure. But it's not difficult to see why when he had to play 2nd fiddle to two of UD's greatest in Paxson and Velvet.

Gary Roggenburk would fit that catagory

Rhoden stood out in their freshman year,
a bit more than Montague..
in their sophomore year both of them had
virtually identical stats ppg and rebounds...

if Rhoden had been able to stay 1 more year,
we still may be talking about the 1980-81 team
as one of our best.. several of the losses that
year I could see us winning against top teams...
would of been a dominating front line 4sure..

not to mention, an amazing freshman, Roosevelt
Chapman.. fun to ponder

How about Ann Meyers a volleyball/Basketball/softball Star from 71 to 75. In Basketball she was a 3 time all American and led the team to a National championship. She scored 40 points in the national championship game. In volleyball she was an all American also and was a Star in softball.

So immortalize her in bronze and just overlook the whole "surrendered her teaching license last year after she was accused of having an improper sexual relationship with a CJ student in the 1980s" thing?

Former CJ teacher loses license after being accused of sexual misconduct

Yes, she made a mistake. A very bad mistake. But that was d@mned near 40 years ago. When can someone be allowed to stop paying the price for a solitary indiscretion that happened nearly 4 decades earlier? Shouldn’t the 35+ years that she taught math to a generation and a half of high school students count at least a little bit toward atonement?

In my opinion, there's a big difference in forgiving a person for past indiscretions and immortalizing them for admiration.

I would start with statues for Tom Blackburn and Don Donoher. After that let's establish a criteria for players to be included. For example, All-Americans, POY (Obi), leading scorer (Velvet) etc. Let's not include everyone from every decade who has worn a Flyers Uniform. It cheapens the whole thing. Instead of naming individuals for inclusion how about establishing the criteria to be included.

Yes it should count. A lot of other teachers do it for money. Amazing that she did it without compensation.

think the statues would have to begin with
Blackburn and Donoher.

Good suggestions. This way, it wouldn’t be a case of “everyone gets a trophy”.
