Butler

The Flyers travel to Indianapolis this week to take on the Butler Bulldogs in the Butler Bowl. The Bulldogs are coming off a win against Davidson on the road by a score of 20-17. Butler runs a spread offense with a single side car running back. They utilize a two-prong attack at the QB position. The starter is R-So Will Marty, who hails from Wyoming OH, who appears to be more of a throwing QB (he does not have a lot of rushing yards). Their other QB is R-Sr Malcolm Weaver who rushed for 110 yd against Davidson and was the Bulldogs leading rusher in that contest. Interestingly, Weaver is also leading them in passing for the year with 157 yd/gm average. Through the air combined, they have averaged 225 yd per game. They throw the ball about 1.5 times more per game than running. The top two Bulldog receivers are Pace Temple and Danny Cotter averaging 93 and 53 yd/gm, respectively. At the RB position, they are led by R-Jr Duvante Lane who is averaging 52 yd/gm. The QB Weaver is the second leading rusher at 49 yd/gm. Their leading tackler on defense is LB Ethan Brunhofer with 52 total tackles on the year. Right behind him on the stops chart are fellow LBs David Starkey and Sean Horan, both with 49 hits on the year. Also of note on the defensive side is DT Jordan Ransone who leads the team with sacks 5.5 for the year. Overall, their defense yields 409 yd of total offense per game.

On offense, we will need to continue our good mix of pass and run to be successful this Saturday. Hopefully we will have some of our running backs return to action this week. We really have been hit by the injury bug at that position. We have definitely been playing at a different level offensively since the San Diego game earlier in the year. On defense, our task is going to be to contain their dual threat QB Weaver when he is in the game. Good running QBs present a challenge to any defense, we see that every week with opposing defenses and our QB Jeske. I would like to see us not give up a 70 plus yard play this week. Our communications needs to get better to avoid these big plays.

We have been clicking on all cylinders the last couple of weeks. The Flyers need to continue this consistent play on the road at Butler this week. I believe if we play this week the way we have the past couple of weeks, we will be successful in the Butler Bowl. Go Dayton Flyers!

Dayton Game Notes

The game notes for Butler have been posted on the website at link below. Our best RB, Tucker Yinger, is not even listed on the depth chart. I assume he is out from the injury he sustained in the Jacksonville game. Hopefully he is back soon.

In the "what if " dept. Flyers still have a shot at a co-championship. although a trip to the playoffs is a real stretch. SDU plays Marist at Marist next week. should Marist win and we can beat Marist and form holds for the other games, we would be co-champs. Hard to do but possible. In all reality SDU probably will go undefeated, as we had our shot at them early and came up short. That loss kind of took the excitement of a possible second trip to the playoff away. Would have liked to play SDU much later in the season, and keep the interest up, also we are healther now, but that didn't happen. At least next year we get them at home.

Don't underestimate the Red Foxes. They are hitting their stride and it's never easy traveling across the country. Marist played a tough OOC schedule which has prepared them for this PFL run. Have to agree, wish Flyers had USD later in season. Flyers playing well and that final game of season in Poighkeepsie could be a classic!! Go Flyers

Keep in mind San Diego plays Campbell and Davidson two teams Dayton does not and USD doesn't play Jacksonville and Morehead State. If USD, Marist, UD tie at 7-1 and I'm reading the tie breaker correctly we'd end up at #6, which is below, what I don't know is if combined record of PFL teams defeated means PFL record of those teams or overall.:

"If the teams are still tied, then the PFL “Strength of Victory” (combined record of PFL teams defeated) shall be used to break the tie and declare the AQ"

If it is PFL record and the items below happen, I think USD would be eliminated because combined W-L of teams defeated would leave UD and Marist with a better record than USD, therefore it would revert back to head to head tiebreaker and UD beats Marist.

1) Dayton Wins Out
2) Marist beats San Diego
3) Dayton beat Marist
4) Jacksonville finishes 5-2 in league
5) Campbell only wins 1 more league game; vs Davidson. Which means MSU beats Campbell
6) Davidson doesn't win a game

This is all rough estimate and the assumption they are referring to PFL record of opponents and not overall. At the end of the day the Flyers need to worry about themselves, if they win out and don't get in a 9-2 record isn't anything to be ashamed of.

Go Flyers!

Tiebreaker rules for 3 or more teams:

When three or more teams are tied:

1)If at any point a tie is broken using the multiple-team tiebreaker procedures and only two teams remain tied, the remaining teams shall revert to the two-team tiebreaker procedures.

2)If the tied teams all played one another, the team with the best cumulative record involving games with the tied teams shall be declared the AQ. For example, if a team is 2-0 against two other tied teams, that team shall be declared champion.

3)If the tied teams all played one another and have identical records against the other tied teams, then each team’s record against all common opponents in the league shall be used to determine the AQ. If teams are still tied, then each team’s record against the next highest common opponent in the league standings shall be used to determine the AQ.

4)If the tied teams did not play each other, but one team played and defeated all the other teams involved in the tie, that team is the AQ.

5)If the tied teams did not play each other, then each team’s record against all common league opponents shall be used to determine the champion. If teams are still tied and did not play each other, then each team’s record against the next highest common opponent in the league standings shall be used to determine the AQ.

6)If the teams are still tied, then the PFL “Strength of Victory” (combined record of PFL teams defeated) shall be used to break the tie and declare the AQ;

7)If the teams are still tied, then the PFL “Strength of Schedule” (combined record of PFL teams played) shall be used to break the tie and declare the AQ;

8)If the teams are still tied, the AQ shall be drawn by lot as the final tiebreaker.

It's interesting to me how teams take on an identity. Last year the team was a second half team with numerous 2nd half comebacks. This year, we seem to be playing well in the first half and floundering, particularly in the third quarter.

We were whoopin Butler handily in the first half (i was somewhat surprised by that) but in the second half (was that the first first half or the second first half? -- what cluster the ambulance fiasco was. Next thing you know, we'll have a game called because of weather). Three and outs on offense.... Long sustained drives by Butler.... If there is a silver lining on Butler's long drives is that it took a lot of time off the clock. We need to figure this out or it may come back to haunt us in one of our last three games.

I am always confused why we don't warm up prior to the start of the second half. We just trot out of the locker room and stand on the sideline. Warming up prior to the start of the second half gets the team together and an opportunity for the coaches or captains to get a motivational message to the whole team.

Love our Flyers!!

I had 4 things going on last Saturday, so couldn't listen to the game much. I tuned in for the last 5 mins and was thrilled to hear that we won. Too bad we lost to SDU. I HATE losing to them anytime, especially when we could've won the league. Coulda, woulda, shoulda.
Looking forward to the last 2 home games. Blankets are in the van
