Richmond Game Thread

The Spiders style is similar to St. Joseph's - very strong defensively and will try to control the tempo. They have an issue with rebounding - one young lady is 6'4 otherwise no one over 6'1. Hard to compare scores - they did lose twice to VCU whom the Flyers just dominated. But they also beat St. Joseph's (in December) by 18. Janelle Hubbard is their stud player averaging about 15 a game. Please if you can come out - would be nice to see more than 2000 people even on a cold evening.

Austria with a career high of 24 on 9-12 shooting, and Grant with 9 pts and 14 boards, as ladies win 55-39. Very sloppy game, as we had 18 turnovers, and no one showed up but the two seniors and Layfield at times.

I hope we were looking toward Sunday, because that was not good.

jenna has a strained knee, out for three weeks

1st quarter was really ugly in particular

Kelley saved the team tonight, without her this could have been one ugly ugly loss.

Richmond is quick on defense and they challenged every pass to Kelley in particular, they wanted the ball out of her hands. But.I thought they limited good looks. They didn't fear that UD was going to drive past them very much and convert. And UD wasn't shooting the ball well either.

I like the way that Lauren shoots the ball but she has a very long way to go before being a starting point guard. But, this game time should really help her improve enough so that they can rest Jenna some during the A10 tournament

Glad I went because it was great to see Kelley play one of her best and last games

Id say all but 3 TOs were completely unforced too. Passing into double teams where teammates are nowhere near "open", getting pick-pocketed, avoidable charges, telegraphed passes to others. We do nothing else but protect the rock and this is probably a 30pt beatdown.

That said our defense was pretty good tonight. Richmond didnt make many Js until late. They had a few rim out which helped, but I thought our perimeter D was pretty good.

Considering we have no PG on the court, its not about style points right now so much as weathering this adversity and finding ways to keep stacking Ws.

Blais on the sidelines -- it might just be my eyes she appears to have put on 5-10lb. Still underweight, but not that emaciated look anymore.

Kelley was masterful again tonight. Almost singlehandedly won this game for us. SGA was steady.

While almost everyone else struggled, it seemed that when we built a lead and inserted subs like Macioce's, Scafe, Dennis and Andi C, that they played like it was garbage time and just fired up shots.

Austria (1098) one point shy of cracking the top 20 in career scoring.

Our shutdown defense on Hubbard (1-13, 3 pts) really stymied their offense -- Richmond coach had no answer.

Kelly was the epitome of what a senior should be late in the season - 24 points, 1 turnover, in 30 minutes of solid play. She will be sorely missed next year. But let's celebrate this year! Another game, another win.

Need to hang on until Jenna returns. Glad to see her walking around the bench area not on crutches or limping noticeably. Any more news on her knee?

The lineup that started the 4th quarter was one that I said to the fan next to me - That is one strange lineup - Scaife, Cvitkovic, Macioce, Harris, Cannatelli. Score went from 43-27 to 43-33 in two trips up and down the floor. Shauna subbed immediately.

I think shauna realizes that she needs more depth for the A10 tournament but whenever she gives other players playing time they fail to earn more.

My son, who is 36, contracted the same illness at about the same time. He lost 25% of his weight and has most of it back. He is a very active in shape guy, and does most of his stuff on a pretty big estate. He had to give up racing (a hobby) last year. This week he said he was feeling pretty good on a new medication he started two weeks ago, and he only has to go to the bathroom about three times a day now. He has pretty much worked full time through all of it at his executive job.

Bottom line, it is a slow way back to full throttle, and much depends on whether any medication is working 100% for Blais, and that she is fully dedicated to changing to the right diet. It takes a couple of years to see what medication works, if any. There are only like three to try, and if none work, then taking out the colon is the usual solution.

I hope Blais' medication is working and we see her in the Fall as an effective player.

Thought SGA played well. Hit the boards and made a couple of jumpers. We didn't feed the post real well so not a lot of chances for post up buckets.

Layfield with another good game. Double digit rebounds and a surprising 2-4 from trey. IMHOP, she is the most pleasant surprise of the season.

When Harris, SGA, and Layfield hit the boards - good things happen. We out-boarded the Spiders 45-29.

Scaife needs to get stronger but real potential. She may be the one player on the team with an honest-to-goodness jump shot which allows her to rise up and get off her shot over the defender. Not a lot of ladies have true jump shots - mostly just push shots from the floor.

Neither Cannatelli or Austria are natural point guards. Both are much better used as shooting guards. Given the injury to Burdette, however, little choice.

18 turnovers last night - 5 by Scaife and 4 by Wilmoth and Layfield. Still too many.

As noted above, we did not feed the post real well. Part of that is poor passing angles by the guards, but also just as much not strong position down low. The bigs gotta want the ball and play really strong to get it.

What we rally miss with Burdette out - besides the leadership - is the ability to get to the rim. Cannatelli is not quick enough and Austria is careful to protect her knees.

Speaking of Austria - outstanding game. Came up big late - both ends of the floor. Understandably, she still plays a bit careful due to her knee injuries. It affects her most when she tries to elevate around the rim. She doesn't get a lot of push off the floor, but I'll take the Austria I saw last night every night and twice on Sunday against GDub.

Team defense was pretty good - Spiders shot only 25%.

Good to see Blais on the bench and smiling - Ward as well.

Coach Ard on crutches. Perhaps injured trying to relive her college days?

Props to Shauna as well. First few games of the season were ugly but she was just trying to grab the reins on short notice. We replay a few of those early games - Quinnipiac and La Salle come to mind - and they would be different today. Thought the turning point was the TAMU game.

Monster game Sunday. If we don't turn it over excessively and continue to play good defense, I think we have a solid chance.

Shauna will get serious consideration for A-10 Coach of the Year along with Cindy Griffin of St. Joe and Jeff Williams of La Salle. Those would be my top three candidates with four games left.

St Joe with a losing record, not ever gonna happen. Lasalle at 8-4, vs UD at 11-1, it's a long shot. Coach of the year is SG's to lose, or win if you prefer.

Lets not forget UD was picked 2nd in the league behind SLU. Maybe unrealistic. Maybe not. The A10 is definitely down this year. We've had injuries. Awful start. Climbing our way out. Our last stretch here is ugly. Without no PG, it's going to take the best basketball of the season to hold on to first place. Others probably have a better path to it despite being a cpl games back given their respective pods and venues.

Right now its not about style points.

Agree with all of the comments above. Layfield has become a good all around player, she hit some big threes

kelley has mastered the little pull up jumper, she looks very comfortable taking that shot and I expect her to make every one of them.

Hope that Sasha can provide some more offense in the next game. She just missed a few shots I would normally expect her to make

The defense was good but there were 3-4 times that Richmond made some really nice cuts/feeds for easy buckets, good enough for me to say to myself "that was sweet". Thankfully there weren't enough to keep the game close. If our defense had been mediocre they probably would have had many more easy buckets.
