Flyers Ground Hawks 2-0

DAYTON (OH) -- Dayton scored two second half goals to overcome an otherwise up-and-down afternoon, downing the St. Joseph's Hawks 2-0 at Baujan Field. Dayton climbs back to .500 on the season once again at 5-5-3 (1-1-2), while the Hawks fall to 1-10-0 (0-3-0).

With the Hawks fielding a relatively weak side, fans were curious to see how the Flyers approached the match after a lackluster performance on Friday evening against Temple. Over the first 10 minutes, UD had more possession in the offensive half of the field and put SJU in a defensive posture.

The Flyers tried to pay down the sidelines and use target players around midfield to serve the ball to, hoping they could one-touch flicks down the touch line to overlapping teammates. For the most part, nothing materialized from it. UD had plenty of space at times to show patience and work the ball inside to the midfield and open up their passing options, but elected to stay near the sideline and get pinched outward as a result.

Those one-touch flicks never found teammates in stride and were easily turned away by a Hawk team that didn't showcase a lot of talent. SJU compensated by battling for loose balls and keeping the Flyers impatient enough to serve up a weak pass or ill-timed long ball that ultimately bogged down the offense.

Dayton had scoring chances. At times, they generated very good momentum as they approached the box. Once UD reached the box however, things fell apart too easily and the play degenerated into a lot of one-on-two or one-on-three attacking. Still, the Flyers also threw enough balls into the box to be rewarded for their overall control of the match. The Hawks did just enough to maintain a clean sheet in the first 45 minutes. They also had some help from the goalpost as UD hit the woodwork mid-way through the half.

UD out-shot SJU 9-2 in the first half while corner kicks were two a piece.

The second half start was just what the doctor ordered. While generating excellent goal-scoring chances in the field of play remained difficult, freshman Marlon Duran took advantage of a free kick from 22 yards out that bent over the wall and into the right corner of the net for the 1-0 Dayton lead in the 49th minute. Duran's strike was first-class and made up for a lot of missed chances by the Flyers up to that point.

Over the last 25 minutes, both sides battled back and forth as the soccer became more physical. Late tackles and some poorly-timed fouls forced the referee to hand out a few yellow cards -- most of them well-deserved. While Dayton continued to look like the better team however, the run of play was not dominating for long stretches. Instead, UD controlled things on counter-attacks by getting players forward. Forwards did a better job of shielding the ball and looking to provide service to others, but UD struggled to use the width of the field when they had opportunities to switch the ball weak-side. Some passes came up short, while others were never served at all. To UD's credit however, they made a stronger commitment to work the ball on the ground in the second half and when they did, their level of play reflected it.

The Hawks had a couple chances to tie the match in the second half, but Tyler Picard and his defensive line were up to the challenge on those infrequent occasions when SJU looked dangerous. As the half continued however, it was apparent that SJU's one-win season thus far was an accurate reflection of their talent -- or lack thereof. Hawk attacking players were inept most of the afternoon and no one on their team demonstrated an ability to stand out with a 'wow' moment. With only hustle and crossed fingers to rely on, they kept the match 1-0 as long as they could.

SJU went a man down in the 62nd minute after Giacomo Dilisi earned consecutive yellow cards just seconds apart. Dayton added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute when Michael Deyhle cleaned up a Nate Dombrowski cross to the far left post. Hawk goalkeeper Michael Moulton stopped the initial cross but the ball squirted out of his hands and Deyhle was there to knock it in the net.

The last 15 minutes were chippy. SJU went down two men just two minutes after Deyhle's goal and the Flyers dominated the latter parts of the match with all kinds of space to roam. The Hawks almost cashed in with a goal of their own despite the two-man disadvantage, but a long blast from outside the box hit the crossbar. Dayton should have knocked a couple more goals in when up two men; they had plenty of great chances but were a half-step late.

UD out-shot SJU 25-4 and won the battle of the corner kicks 4-2. The shot discrepancy was -- in part -- a result of the 11 vs. 9 over the last 15 minutes.

Overall, the Hawks looked putrid. Like most D-I men's soccer teams, they demonstrate plenty of effort. The better soccer teams escape the parity conundrum with teamwork, better tactics, and a couple marquee players capable of changing the match. They had none of these latter skill sets and Dayton did just enough to earn the result. Dayton did not play especially well and getting so many new faces to gel as a team remains a work-in-progress. There is a lot of individual talent on the field at times, but staying organized and becoming greater than the sum of the parts is a larger step UD has yet to take.

The Flyers finish the weekend 1-1 and remain at home next weekend for matches against Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. UD will look to win consecutive matches for the first time in 2010.
