Some brief takeaways from the weekend:
1. This past weekend was a great "break" for the team. They have been grinding for almost 2 weeks with roughly 12-14 hrs of FB activity each day. After helping students move in on Sat. am, they get to chill before the evening scrimmage, and then blow off a little steam on Sat. night. Sunday is a great day with family and friends, pictures and just one meeting at night.
2. Offense: After a slow start, the offense looked good during the scrimmage. A nice, sustained drive by the starters led to the 1st TD. The next several groups also moved the ball very well with a mix of strong runs and some great passes/catches. One thing is clear, there will be a few true FR in the mix on offense, including R. Skibinski (WR) and S. Prophitt (RB). The only (mild) issue of concern is that the likely starting RB (T.Yinger) sat out the scrimmage. From what I understand, he should be fine for Central St., although they may not need him.
3. Defense: The front seven looked very solid. With the first/second units in the game, it was tough sledding running the ball. As Coach Chamberlain noted, however, there were a number of big plays by the offense. As expected, there are some things to work on at the safety position. The good news is that they have 2 weeks to shore things up before playing a Central State team that doesn't pass the ball very much or very effectively (more on that in a game week post).
4. Special Teams: Tough to tell much in this setting. Willy Will did hit the upright on his first extra point attempt. He's probably only going to miss one of those all year, so it was good to get it out of the way in the scrimmage. With the returning specialists and the focus the coaches place on special teams, this should be a major area of strength.
5. General Team Mood: This seems like a very confident, prepared team. Lots of senior leadership. They seemed loose and together. I think they know they will have a target on their backs, but they're fine with that. It will definitely be a fun ride.
Go Flyers.
