BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Time to search the intrawebs for some interesting items to share:

-- The Detroit News has just recently added a recruiting column by a dude named Sam Webb to their sports section. Here's the latest installment, on a prime-time kid from Ft. Wayne that both UM and MSU are after:

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll...15/1004/SPORTS

The Assistant Sports Editor at the Detroit News is none other than UD grad Phil Laciura. The addition of the recruiting blog is in response to one that the Freep launched last winter called "The U" penned by Vince Ellis. I sat next to Vince at the Michigan HS All Star game and he seemed like a pretty good guy. I had to laugh when he leaned over to me in the midst of the 176-170 playground pick-up game and asked "You aren't keeping score of this, are you?"

-- I've told this story before in this space, but it bears repeating. When I was working at WVUD in the early '70s, the late Steve Weisburg was the "Sports Editor" which basically meant he was the one who got stuck interviewing peripatetic UD Football Coach Ron Marciniak for his weekly coaches show. Anyway, one day Weisberg and I were shooting the breeze in the 'VUD office up on the 2nd floor of KU and Laciura (who was Sports Editor for the Flyer News) came in, all excited and out of breath. He tells Weisberg and me "You gotta come down to the Fieldhouse and see this freshman kid play in the open gym. He's jumping over and blowing by (then senior) Donald Smith." Having watched just about every game that Smitty played, I found this hard to believe, so Steve and I followed Phil down to the FH and sure enuf, Johnny Davis was, indeed, jumping over and blowing by Donald Smith.

-- So how about it, eh DDN -- ain't it about time that you joined the crowd and added a recruiting column? Even the Flint Journal has one, for cryin' out loud! It doesn't have to be exclusively about the Flyers, or just basketball, either -- OSU, WSU, Miami, UC, X and UK all make more than enuf noise in a variety of sports to help fill the column. Hell, I'll even write it for ya.

-- Okay, so Mariah Carey threw out the first pitch at a Japanese League baseball game the other day. Here's the video:

Do you think she even practiced pitching? It musta been those high heeled sneakers that she was rockin' that threw her off, I guess.

-- From the Sports Illustrated vault comes the "22 Most Bizarre SI Covers" in honor the the 'Bizarro Baseball' cover that festoons this week's edition:

Linky goodness: http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.c...x.htm?bcnn=yes

-- The cover is a takeoff on the "Bizarro World" that Superman used to find himself in on occasion in the old DC Comics. It was basically a parallel universe where everything was all f*cked up. I never really got into "BW" -- me, I was more of a Mr. Mxyzptlk man myself:

Funny, he doesn't look Polish, does he?

-- The prices on my dream car keep going up. The owner of this 1951 Hudson Hornet convertible is asking six figures:

'Fraid it's gonna have to stay just that -- a dream.

-- Bert Blyleven's t-shirt kinda says it all, doesn't it:

-- Former Bush White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan may not be a very popular guy around the WH these days, but he sure is at Fark.com. Check out this thread:

A few of my favorite comments:

"If my Grandma had wheels, she'd be a firetruck."

"Hey a**hole, why didn't you say anything 5 years ago?"

"Don't impeach; indict."

"At least we tried to impeach Bill Clinton for all the right reasons."

"This is news only to the willfully ignorant and the willfully ignorant will continue to be willfully ignorant."

"I noticed 'He's not telling the truth' was mysteriously absent from the official White House press release."

-- Hey, they figured out what the purpose of Stonehenge is: it's a bus stop for aliens. I keed. Here's a link to the article that will 'splain it for ya:

-- Finally, in memory of the late Harvey Korman, I give you the "Pledge to Hedley Lamarr" scene from "Blazing Saddles":

That's it "From the Swamp."
