He was the coach when Dayton made the difficult decision to go D-3. He wasn’t thrilled about it and left soon thereafter, but he was never a head coach again. Little known fact: He almost had Joe Klecko ready to play for the Flyers. But after the D-3 decision, Klecko wound up at Temple and became an All-American defensive lineman. He and Mark Gastineau formed the New York Sack Exchange for the Jets in the early ‘80s.

That's so true Fly (about Klecko) . . . he attended the Marianist-run Chester St. James High School, near the Widener campus . . . the folks at Temple claimed Dayton unfairly was recruiting Klecko (whatever that means). One of Marciniak's top players was a McVay recruit, a great fellow named Kelvin Kirk that I taught for a few weeks when I was a sub teacher at Dunbar. He was one of the last ever Flyers drafted by the Steelers in '76. Kelvin, who passed a few years ago, was a long-time star with several teams in the CFL and at the time of his death was the art director for the Toronto Globe & Mail.

Didn’t know Kelvin landed at the Globe & Mail. Great newspaper, and I bet the staff there loved him.

Fly, I misspoke . . . he was art director with the Ottawa Citizen, not the G&M.

Ron Marciniam taped a 5 minute coaches show on WVUD with the late a Steve Weisberg. If you look up the word “enthusiastic” in the dictionary there is a pic of Ron there.
RIP coach.
