Covid-19 to impact Obi & other top draft pick's contract deals?

I seen that the NBA and the Players Association reached an agreement to withhold 25 percent of players' paychecks beginning May 15 as the league weighs when or if it can resume the 2019-20 season.

How badly or if at all do you think the Covid-19 situation will impact Obi's payday as a top draft pick?

If he does not want it I'll gladly take his payday even with the 25% decrease...heck I'll take the 25% decrease.

NFL players get signing bonuses. Is that the norm in the NBA?

The NBA has a pay scale for rookies, so they are locked into a pay range based upon where they are drafted. Lets say he's drafted 5th overall, Obi would reason to make $4 mil a year, knock off 25% of that and it would be $3 mil in season 1, then $4 mil guaranteed in season 2 and team options @ $4 mil in seasons 3 & 4.

I'm not sure if there is a signing bonus involved or not, doesn't seem like it based upon what I read.

I think the NFL does signing bonuses because that unlike MLB and I believe NBA that is the only part of NFL contracts that is guaranteed.

I would think this would not affect Obi as he is not part of the 2019-2020 season.

good point, unless next season ends up getting shortened as well. They are already talking about a Dec start date next year, could lead to a shortened season next year as well, or perhaps they'll just push the dates of the season and always start in December moving forward.

Somewhere I read that they have had talks, even pre Covid, about not starting the season until December every year to shorten the time period that the NBA is going head to head with MLB Playoffs, NFL and college football.

No NBA signing bonuses for rookies because all money is guaranteed. Here's the breakdown for guaranteed salaries & amount of team option for year 3 for the Top 10 picks for the 2019-2020. Rookie salary scale is based on a percentage of the salary cap, which is based on a percentage of league revenue. I have no idea how COVID will affect next year's cap.

Guaranteed (Yr 1 + Yr 2); Total including Yr 3 team option (all $ in millions)
1. $20.0; $30.7
2. $17.9; $27.5
3. $16.0; $24.7
4. $14.5; $22.3
5. $13.1; $20.2
6. $11.9; $18.3
7. $10.9; $16.7
8. $10.0; $15.3
9. $9.1; $14.1
10. $8.7; $13.4

I've seen Obi from going anywhere from 1 to 8 in mock drafts. $15.3m at #8 is nice, but #1 pick is double that.
