6’9” SF David N’Guessan (Mt. Zion Prep)

N’Guessan’s versatility and long-term potential at 6’9” are attractive and coaches are taking notice. He left the summer with a handful of offers, but N’Guessan’s recruitment has now been taken another level. Virginia Tech, Washington State, VCU, and DePaul have all offered him over the last 2 months. N’Guessan has capable perimeter skill with an effective outside shot and the ability to slash from the wing. Although he needs to add weight, N’Guessan isn’t weak or soft and has the touch to score in the post against bigger forwards. Defensively, he is active inside and uses quick leaping ability to protect the rim and rebound, where he can then handle himself in transition. It may take him some time, but the level of recruitment that N’Guessan is receiving is warranted.

Sounds like a scouting report on Obi from 3 years ago. Hope N’Guessan is paying attention to how Obi has developed.

Sounds like his game would work well in our system, but the heart ailment would give me flashbacks to Big Steve and Chris Daniels (R.I.P. to both of our gentle giants).

Enjoyed watching David N'Guessan's you tube videos. Agree what someone said before that he reminds me of a young Obi Toppin. When he gets a rebound he immediately starts to dribble the ball upcourt. However he looks to pass ahead to a guard whereas Obi can take it 94 ft. He has all the tools to be molded into the type of player that fits our system.

His older brother, Lucas is 7'0" 230lbs. averaging 7.9ppg and 5.3 rebounds for East Tennessee State University. He transferred to ETSU from Oklahoma State. ETSU is in first place in the Southern Conference with a 17-3 record. At 6'9" David needs to put on weight but our strength and conditioning coach can help him bulk up.

If we could get either Seth Towns from Harvard for two years or David N'Guessan as a true freshman it would be great! We need to get them to visit first as we have had pretty good luck lately.

Head coaches from Dayton, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech along with an assistant from St Joe’s is on hand for 2020 Mt Zion forward David N’Guessan

He saw UD vs. St. Joe's in Philly and has said he would like to visit Dayton.

Late bloomer Eric Gaines emerging as high major prospect

After his strong senior season, Gaines now ranks No. 79 overall in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and No. 81 in the Top247.

“It’s good, my recruitment is open,” Gaines said. “I’m just waiting on the right school to pitch me and I will verbally commit.”

Gaines, who cites Duke as his dream school, has taken official visits to Georgia State, Dayton and St. Louis. At this point, Gaines is focused on closing out his senior season and has yet to schedule any other official visits.

Should we assume that seeing as UD has had a visit, that our pitch was not from the "right" school? And if the "right" school doesn't offer will we be in the mix.

could be wrong here,
but that is what I am reading also...

Go Flyers!

they don't want to come here,
we don't need them
unless 100% team oriented...

These are levels of recruits that our conference really holds us back. X has a top 15 recruiting class next year; i'd say no A10 team has had a top 15 class since maybe nelson/west at SJU?

Not the end all be all, but it's easier to be good year in and year out getting top 150 players.

Was that class top 15? Neither Nelson nor West were top 100 recruits. Both were obviously overlooked and great together, but were they a top 15 class coming in? I looked, but couldn't find.

Per ESPN VCU was #14 class in 2014

Which is the only A-10 top 25 class I see going back to 2007

I have no idea where UD is with him or if he's the board

I got the impression he was hoping for his stock to rise and a power conference offer in the spring. Does the success this season change the way he feels about UD?

Seems like he is holding out for a good P5 program. I have a hard time thinking we'd say no thanks to a Top 80 kid...

I’m sure Belmont’s Shawn Phillips (2022?) is on our radar, but are we on his? I see he’s already mingled with the likes of Calipari and Huggins. Pipe dream, I assume?

My memory is hazy, for some reason I thought they were both highly regarded coming out of HS. Probably wasn't a top recruiting class, but it was the only thing that came to mind.

No idea, both could have been top 125, all I can find are a top 100 list, no team rankings or anything like that. Certainly in the end, that ended up being one of the 15 best recruiting classes in the nation based upon collegiate success, just not sure anyone realized it heading in.

Any news on possible recruits?

With a possible player of the year, coach of the year, 12 game winning streak, Number 6 ranking, 14 game sell-out, rebid fanbase...has anyone have any news lately on the recruiting front? What recruits have been to our home games?

I second this request.

I would be interested in a thread that is dedicated to, “Who sat behind the Dayton bench tonight?”

This might sound easy to a novice, but for the throw to bounce where it does, and for Mo to time his steps and jump to grab the ball at it's apex, and then to keep your balance and smash the ball thru the rim, all in 1 continuous motion, is anything but easy.

I also have the luxury of perspective and can honestly say that 3 years ago, after a game with Kett Jr High, I left the gym telling friends he's not athletic enough for UD.

Prove me wrong, Mo!!!!
Bump.

Have we heard anything more about Njie from Centerville? There was talk a couple of years ago, but later reports are non-existent. Does anyone know what the deal is?

Have not heard anything lately. Not sure his stock has gone up. Might have gone down. He has had an injury this season, so playing time has been reduced lately.

He is a good defensive player, but his offensive skills and coordination are very weak.

His brother actually looks to be a much better prospect.

Thanks. Since I live in the immediate Dayton area and hadn’t heard much, I wondered if he had possibly peaked a year or 2 ago. I went to a few recruiting sites last night (after noting, again, that we’re probably losing all of our starting frontcourt after this season), and saw no LOI and medium/cool interest from every program that was hot on his tail 2 years ago. He might do well to get a year of prep school, or to go to a low-major, at this rate. Sorry to see the lack of development.

FWIW, I’ve heard that UD pulled the offer for Njie. Mo is a bit of a project and is currently sidelined with a stress fracture.

My only concern is, when a shot misses (and at least 40% of them will), who gets the rebound? Need at least a little more beef than Mo to replace Sarge, Chip, and Obi 1.

At this point in his development, Zimi provides length but not beef. And unless you’re referring to a different “Jordy”, the one we have is already playing, so the only addition is more minutes (if he can stay out of foul trouble). Plus, Jordy and Mo play the same position.

I’ve noticed UD has left Chase on the roster. If he can get healthy, I think this might be a possibility. I don’t think it’s an oversight.

By all accounts, he was a very good addition to the program. He simply had health issues that required him to leave the program this year. If he’s able to regain his health? Welcome back!

From what I've heard, Zimi is Obi 2.0. In terms of athleticism, shot, and attitude.

We are not a great rebounding team because we don't necessarily emphasize it - at least not every game.

Probably correct. I just don't think we have the size and bench, though, to become as great a rebounding team as they'd like to be. Maybe there's that emphasis or, rather, lack of you mention. They'd be asking Obi to take far more chances with aggressive play.

Having one other player on your bench that is bigger than an actual guard is also the issue. This is more mandated I believe.

I won't say it reminds me of the miracle team 4 years ago with 7 schollie players with one being a 6'6" former walk-on center. I truly believe Archie had that team get back on defense immediately to avoid foul trouble.IIRC, that entire year was so remarkable that I believe there wasn't more than 1-2 games at most they were in any kind of serious foul trouble..

Every team is deficient in something. Look at St. Louis. They are amazing at rebounding but can't throw the ball in the ocean. Heck, it is hard to find just a player that can shoot and rebound.

Last year we were getting feedback out of practice reporting on the transfer players. This year so much going right on the court in games it’s been a little overlooked. Anyone have any info on how our redshirt guys are doing in practice?

Rebounding in 20/21

Let's remember that we have a chiseled Sissoko available next year, after one year of learning the ropes. Based upon size alone, I would expect him to see playing time so that he can assert himself on the boards, if nothing else.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think it was Jalin Billingsley from Lutheran East (Cleveland).

Jaylin Galloway, not Billingsley. Galloway is a 2021 recruit from The Skill Factory Prep in Atlanta.

Lightbulb Are our rebounding numbers bad?

Originally Posted by John C. View Post

UD currently #203 in rebounds per game (35.08/game, 842 total). That sounds bad.
UNC is #1 (43.38/game, 1041 total)
SLU is #17 (40.00/game, 960 total)

Flip the coin.
UD is #1 in FG% (52.3%)
UNC is #306 (41.0%)
SLU is #182 (43.7%)

UD has missed 653 shots and grabbed 196 offensive rebounds (30%)
UNC has 894 and 340 (38%)
SLU has 804 and 320 (39.8%)

So SLU has 118 more rebounds than UD, but has had 151 more opportunities on the offensive end alone. UNC leads UD by 199 rebounds with a whopping 241 more missed shots.
Nearly 33% of SLU's rebounds come from missed shots while UD only grabs roughly 23%. This doesn't account for the number of opportunities on missed free throws where SLU has missed a mind boggling 231 times (UD-119, UNC-159).

I believe that UD would be a better rebounding team if they didn't think that every shot was going in the basket (which it does better than everyone else). If you look at what percentage of total rebounds are defensive, UD comes in at 77% compared to 67% for SLU and UNC.
It's easy for individuals to practice shooting. It's hard to practice rebounding. Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. Ultimately, the winner of the game is determined by who scores the most points.

Footnote: SLU and UNC both have better rebound margins than UD, but UD gives up 3 fewer rebounds per game than either of them.

we NEED to have a separate thread

as far as recruits...

if that could be done would be awesome...

Not to be Debbie Downer, but that claim is going to have to prove itself before I believe it. Those are some Titanic sized shoes to fill! I'd be happy if he turns into a senior year DMO style player in his first couple years.

On the bright side, it looks like all our kids coming in next year can grab the ball, going by their averages this year. I get it, they are mostly guards, but every bit helps.

I'm hoping Jordy continues to come along - quickly! I also hope Mouleye is as much of a brute as he appears to be.

Let's also remember that kids picked up in the off-season after re-opening due to coaching carousel crap are eligible. Maybe we can pull a 4/5 frosh that can contribute?

Remember the two-bit coach nobody wanted, Neil Sullivan was raked over the coals for "settling for the nostalgia choice", the guy that was let go by Bama, couldn't coach offense, and was filling a coaching vacancy a much more talented, experienced, and respected Xs and Os guy could have filled?

Yeah, thats the guy that has us 22-2 and #6 in the country just three years removed from the Messiah going to Indiana and -- apparently to the delight of many -- recruiting guys with size and skill sets that meet the approval of almost everyone.

I cant help but find joy in some Flyer fans lapping up the direction of the program in spite of their disapproval of the coach. It must be killing them! Not directing this at anyone in particular -- just the peanut gallery that has pulled a complete Homer Simpson-Bush Disappearance.

I remember all the gripping 2 summers ago and that we didn't have any bigs and AG didn't seem to realize that elephant was in the room. Meanwhile, less than 2 year later we have a top 3 player in all of D1 and yes, he is a big and no we didn't need more size.

This past year, shooting, and more specifically 3 point shooting was going to be a huge issue and once again, how could AG be so out of touch to let a can't lose phenom like McNeil get away?

Sooner or later people will stop thinking they are more aware of this team's reality and the talent he has and is bringing in and more and more people will begin to trust that he knows what he is doing.

The heck with having to prove anything at this point. Enjoy the ride and appreciate what has been accomplished as it is a whole lot of fun and excitement.

Zimi looks to have a body comparable to Mikesell right now plus 5-10 pounds. That's a pretty great frame for a Freshman. If he can learn to use his body half as good as Trey and have Mikesell's height with an inkling of Obi's athleticism and or attitude, I'm really looking forward to seeing him on the court.

Blakney is another I'm looking forward to. Total effort guy, with legit hops and competitiveness. May be a mini Trey with a little more height.

Let's enjoy this year and think about next when this one wraps up

I really like his pull-up jumper. You don't see much of that at the college level anymore. Also, he is much more athletic than his body frame would indicate. After watching the video, he reminded me of a poor-man's Luke Kennard.

From that short clip, athletically he is on Luke's level or better. Of course this is without seeing much defense.

I like Luke's game (he seems to have a bit of natural dog in him). If he has an opportunity to flush it, he flushes it. Personally, I love that aggressiveness. It reminds me of Kyle Davis

Stumbled upon this...anybody have any idea how these rankings are calculated? Looks like a detailed numerical way of ranking recruits.

I'm partial but I like Jalen Crutcher the best and think that Dwayne Cohill and Moulaye Sissoko are going to be a great assets to our Flyers next season!

He is much more athletic than I thought he would be. He seems to have a good handle and a pretty smooth stroke.

Having watched Luke Kennard multiple times, I can see some resemblance (not suggesting LF is at his LK’s level).

He needs to get stronger and probably needs to improve his defense-not a slam on him, most FR do-but I think he is going to have a good career.

Kostas was not a Grant recruit. He was a redshirt when Grant arrived on campus.

Clearly, Crutcher was lightly recruited.

Jordan Davis was an Archie recruit who recommitted to UD after AG was named HC.

That’s an anomaly. They happen. Ranking are very important. The top schools stay top schools by consistently getting highly rated recruits.

I think once you get outside the top 100-150 players there's a lot of variance. It's easy to identify the guys like a Zion Williamson but saying this guy is 234th in the country vs 348th is a crap shoot

I’d argue that once outside the top 50 there’s a lot of variance. What you can’t gauge from “Star” ratings is how a kid will develop and fit in your system. This is where real scouting takes place. Just so happens that today’s DDN had an article about Neil Sullivan and he stated “they trust their eyes. They don’t get caught up in stars and this and that.”

That is so true. A former UD assistant told just that years ago. The other wild card is development. No one knows how a player will develop when they are outside the top 50. Obi and Jalen are great examples.

The reality of recruiting at Dayton no matter the coach is landing an occasional 4 star with mostly 3 & 2 stars out of high school.

UK, Kansas and the top of the power 5 recruiting is about pure salesmanship on the elite.

Dayton recruiting is about being able to ID the 3 star who's gonna be Scoochie Smith, Jalen Crutcher or Chris Johnson. Being able to nail evaluations and project guys out is the name of the game

Not sure what you mean, but if you look at all those high ranking Alabama player rankings you’ll notice that between the years 2009 and 2017 Alabama went to ONE NCAA tourney while UD went to FIVE with all those low star players. I think this proves my point.

I don’t know where we stand with 6-9 David N’Guessan, but he was at tonight’s VCU game on an official visit with the Rams. Would be nice if after witnessing the game, he gave Dayton a visit.

New video on Luke Frazier. I am liking this kid more and more! Every time I watch a video, he is doing more things. Love his pull-up jumper, switching hands to finish, and his ball-handling skills.
