With the Matos transfer there are now as many as three spots open on the 21 roster. I would like to see two of those spots go to sit-out transfers to prepare for '22 which right now looks like
Cohill (senior)
Frazier (soph)
Blakney
Sissoko
Nwokeji
Brea
Transfers Griffin and O'Connell would fit nicely into that roster.

Not just sit-out transfers, but preferably Juniors-to-be. I know that “class balance” isn’t the end-all/be-all, but it would be nice to have the right 2 Seniors ahead of this coming year’s Freshman class. Then, there’d be less pressure to hit another grand slam with the Freshman class of 2021-22.
Edit: And the more I read about Griffin, the more I think he’d be a great fit for us, and vice versa.

I would say you want them for at least two years if they are sitting out one.
You are committing a lot of time - one year of training - so you want a good two years or more from that investment.
Grad Transfers are more about reliable backups that add experience. Not sure if Grad Transfers are as desirable for our program. While our offense is a thing of beauty - I would have to believe any Grad Transfer or first year player will have a tough times adding to that beauty.

Stony Brook big man Jeff Otchere is expected to graduate and transfer, sources told ESPN. Should be in the portal this week.
2019 America East Defensive Player of the Year. Averaged 1.5 blocks and 5.4 rebounds in just 17.1 minutes this season.
I believe UD kicked the tires on him out of JUCO

Illinois transfer Alan Griffin taking time with process
“I’m shortening my list by what they are saying and looking over stuff, and doing my research,” he added. “I’m taking my time with it.”
While a host of transfers have already made their college decisions, Griffin, a native of New York, said he’s not rushing the process.
“With all this stuff going on I’m going to wait,” Griffin said. “I’m not trying to rush, I’m going to take my time with this. It could be two week from now, it could be next week or it could be a month. I’m just really taking my time and really picking out the schools and which one fits my plan and whichever school that can help me achiever the goal.”

I like to look at free throw percentages. Brandon Johnson shot 73.8% from the free throw line this past season. This would have ranked fourth on our team behind only Crutcher, Watson and Cohill. Chatman would have been a close fifth at 71.8% and Obi was at 70.2%. Some will say that free throw percentage doesn't mean didilly squat but I think it can win a lot of close games!
In his third last game in a win against Eastern Michigan Johnson was high point man with 20 points and 12 rebounds going 4-11 from the field but 12-14 from the free throw line!

So far, according to 247 Sports, there are a total of 231 players who have entered their names to the 2019-2020 transfer portal. There are 123 guards (124 if you count Jhery Matos as colleges have two days to add a player to the list after he announces), 93 forwards and 15 centers.
Last season there was over 500! I wonder if the list goes that high again this year?

According to Jeff Goodman, who updates his list daily, there are over 500 in the portal and 125 grad transfers. Also, I want to say last year was closer to 700 than 500.

Grad transfer Brandon Johnson a hot commodity
"I’m doing my own homework and research on schools," said Johnson. "I’m figuring who is coming in and who is coming out and seeing who I’m replacing. I’m also asking AAU coaches with relationships that know the coaches recruiting me to see if they are a good coach and if they have a good past with grad transfers."
Johnson hasn't set anything in concrete yet, but he does have a good idea of how he'll approach the process of picking a school and what will be important to him.
“I would probably say I’m petty much open," said Johnson. "I'm hearing everybody out and seeing who is interested. By maybe Saturday or Sunday this weekend I’m going to narrow it down to like 10 tams and then in the next week or so get it down to my top three.”

The Flyers are definitely in the hunt. Last week, Alan Griffin surprised many with his decision to leave Illinois after two productive seasons. He is the perfect versatile, multi-positional wing that any program would love to have.
Dayton will not have it easy whenever it comes to landing his commitment, though. Arizona, Iowa State, Miami, Syracuse and Texas make up the remainder of his list, though there is a chance that he could add to it before he makes his decision. The Flyers are one of the few that have a strong chance but also keep an eye on Miami, who could be the dark horse among the pack.

Dayton is in Alan Griffin's list of his final six with Miami, Syracuse, ArizonaSt, Texas and Iowa St. I hope he comes to Dayton. In 28 games and 18.1 minutes per game he made 31 out of 36 free throws for 86.1%. He would be a beast coming from the Big !0 to the A-10 and probably would get to the line much more frequently. One thing certain, AG would have to be sure he fit our culture as he did have that one incident where he was ejected in a game against Purdue for stepping on the chest of a player while he was laying on the floor under the basket. Is his status sit one year and play two years? He would fit right in as Crutcher and Chatman will both be graduating.

This could be a huge factor. Cohill is the only other guard on the roster at the moment so he would easily slide into the starting 5.
I'm still a little concerned about the lack of interest in PGs the staff seems to have. I understand it is less of a big deal the way AG runs his offense (often times wings/bigs bring the ball up the court), but going from two starting PGs to just one on the whole roster seems like a big gap. And let's face it Cohill is really more of a combo-guard.
EDIT: Also interesting that Griffin is from Ossining, NY...

It appears the staff has been recruiting PGs pretty aggressively. I think the lack of results can be tied directly to Crutcher playing 31.2 minutes per game as a freshman, then Chatman jumping on board. Hard to blame a high school player for not wanting to be third in the rotation.
I expect a home run at the PG position in the next recruiting/transfer cycle. The Scoochie/Crutcher spot will be appealing.

Interesting landing spot, but they appear to have playing time available with four-year starting PG Darrell Brown graduating. The program's in pretty good shape too, having won the MVC tournament the past two years.

@GoodmanHoops
Drake sophomore big man Liam Robbins announces he is transferring. Averaged 14.1 points, 7.1 boards and 2.9 blocks per game this past season.
Should be a long line of high-major suitors.
12 points and a board against UD. If UD's interested it probably can't hurt he's seen the Arena firsthand

7’0” and 235. Would make for a great “twin tower” combination with Mo and possibly Shawn Phillips. I’m thinking he has P5 dreams, though (maybe of following Garza at Iowa).

Why would he want to follow someone who was not even good enough to win the Naismith?

Darweshi Hunter might be a name to keep an eye on. Freshman who just transferred from Central State. 6'5 guard out of Cincinnati
First team DII All American as a freshman. Scored 35 on Wright State in exhibition and put 19 & 11 on Savannah State
Averaged 20.7 a game with 6.1 boards while shooting 51% from the field.
Just picked up Wright State and St. Bonaventure offers

Very interesting point on this player...two questions:
1. Would he be able to play in the 20/21 season?
2. As I have posted for years, I see a lot of very good D-2 players out there. Why don't more D-1 coaches give them an opportunity to move up to D-1?

In addition, he scored 17 points and nabbed 13 rebounds against Miami in a lopsided loss to the Red Hawks. I think this kid has flown under the radar screen. This is a great find, OSU Flyer.

He'd be a sit one play 3. That is unless UD petitioned for immediate eligibility or the transfer rule changed.
The D2 conference Central State plays isn't the strongest but he's put legit numbers against D1 opponents.
He played high school ball at Princeton in Cincinnati there's a chance he's been to campus for a camp or played at the Arena so he could have some familiarity with the facilities. With no campus visits for the foreseeable future potentially having seen the facilities is a leg up
The facilities I think are real selling point for UD and this shutdown takes that card off the table. The virtual stuff helps but seeing the Arena, Donohor Center, practice facility and campus in person is valuable.
Not sure how big this guys profile gets but coming from D2 could keep him under the radar

Hunter is originally from Phoenix, Arizona. He spent his first year of high school in that city but moved to Cincinnati for his Sophomore year. Hunter would spend the next three years at nearby Princeton High School in the Sharonsville area of Cincinnati. There he found his real niche, scoring the basketball. He became a 1,000-point scorer and made the All-Ohio team during his senior season.
Out of High School, Hunter was getting D1 interest. Some Patriot League schools were scouting him, and he even got an offer from Central Connecticut State. He decided to stay local though, and attend Central State in Wilberforce. There he was named a member of the All-SIAC First Team, SIAC Freshman of the Year, and a BoxToRow.com D2 All American. Hunter finished 2020 leading the conference in scoring with 20.7 PPG. He also led the team with 6.1 RPG, while shooting 51% from the field.
Hunter’s film shows that he is a catch and shoot, three-point shooter. But when there is an open lane, he loves to go up for an alley-oop or dunk.

We will see if Grant is on Hunter. He looks to have average hops and average quickness, which is probably what has held him in D2. Would he be on the level of Jalen, Ibi, Rodney, Dwayne or Luke Frazier? I don't see it.

Dwayne has never scored double digits in a game after two seasons in college.
In 3 games against D1 competition Hunter has scored 35, 19 & 17. That's more points than Cohill scored in 18 games of A10 play
He's also had a double double in two of those 3 games

As OSU Flyer stated Hunter has already received offers from Wright State and St. Bonaventure. If you were him would you rather receive an offer from Dayton with all their facilities and recent success or the Raiders and Bonnies?
After watching his you tube videos he could be a diamond in the rough. If AG and his staff are interested they should go after him!

Dwayne plays because of his defensive proclivity, not his ability to score in double digits. For what it's worth I think he's plenty capable of being a scorer and I expect will see more of that as his playing time increases.

I agree with all of this
Maybe Hunter can play, maybe he can't. My point is that there's enough evidence not to write him off

Who are the best Transfers left we have been mentioned with?
Was really hoping to Land Griffin given his Dad and AG were on staff together in OKC.

Very little reason for concern... I'm going to go way out on a limb and guess AG isn't spending a whole lot of time scouring this board for various posters' recruiting insights based solely on 2 minute youtube highlight videos.

That's distinctly a second-tier list. Seems he's looking for playing time at a bigger program, which you'd think we can offer.
He's from the South Side/south suburbs of Chicago. Somebody get Pollard, Kyle Davis and Kevin Dillard on the phone with him.

High-majors reaching out to Rapolas Ivanauskas
A highly thought of recruit coming out of high school, Rapolas Ivanauskas initially decided to commit to Northwestern. After some injury filled years stunted his development, Ivanuaskas made the decision to transfer, and headed to Colgate.
Once at Colgate, the 6-foot-10 forward showed why he was wanted by high-major programs out of high school. As a sophomore Ivanauskas averaged 15.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest, and he followed that up as a junior averaging 13.1 points and 7.6 boards per game.
Now Ivanauskas will be on the move again after entering the transfer portal, and his phone has been very busy.

“I spoke with Coach (Mark) Turgeon from Maryland, Coach (Anthony) Grant at Dayton, Coach (Patrick) Ewing at Georgetown, and Coach (John) Brannen from Cincinnati,” he said. “Those are the four schools whose head coaches I have spoken with.”

I can't speak much to his game, but a soph PG transfer that would sit out next year would be ideal. Potential to start his junior year, while maintaining the ability to sell that same playing time as a possibility to a frosh PG recruit next season (current HS junior)
Decent, 3p% this year, on OK volume (though he played backup minutes, so the rate/min is probably pretty good). Only 46% on 2 pts which tells me he either takes too many mid-ranged jumpers or he needs to add muscle to be more effective attacking the rim (or both). Just a shade shy of a 2-1 a:to ratio, so that isn't too bad.

Some good teams on that list, but for rating the total experience (coaching, community, game day atmosphere, chance at making it at the next level), I think we’re at the top of that list. Hopefully, Brandon Johnson thinks so, too.

There is a marked focus on warm weather schools in his list. Maybe he just likes warm weather.

Average temp in West Virginia is 63.9 degrees. I know that isn't like Tampa, but it sure beats Dayton, Omaha, or South Bend.
