Johnny Davis Interview
Johnny Davis was interviewed on Cavs.com and was asked about, among other things, his time at Dayton.
In Dayton, the Flyers are not THE team, they’re OUR team. There’s a big different in those two words. If you don’t live down there, you don’t quite understand it.
When you come down I-75 and see that arena all lit up, you’re like: ‘Wow! This is Dayton, Ohio!’
And I think if the Tournament hadn’t been cancelled, I thought something special was brewing for the Flyers this year.

Boy, did he hit the nail on the head. It is just different. UD is Dayton and Dayton is UD. It is a part of all of us. I have been gone for 45 years but it still a big part of me. Dayton will always be my home and UD is the heart of all of that.

My rear end may be in NJ but my heart is, and always will be in Dayton, Ohio.

I’ve been following The Flyers since 1966 and I think Johnny was the most exciting player I have seen in a Flyer uniform!!

Somewhere in the stuff that got cleaned out of my childhood home is an autograph from Johnny Davis, that my mom got for me when she taught him in 1973-74. By all accounts, a great guy and a class act. We were blessed to have him as a Flyer.

He played in the era of no dunks. His most exciting play. and memory for me. is when he got a breakaway and would go up above the rim with two hands and drop the ball down through the cylinder.

I still remember a photo of Johnny D — cover of media guide??? — way above the rim blocking a shot by Clemson 7-footer Tree Rollins. He had hops and quicks in equal parts.

The only time I saw Johnny in person was his, I think third game . . . in the Garden, December of '73, first game of a triple-header against LIU . . . 12 noon start time. I think we had just lost a heartbreaker to Michigan a few days before. LIU jumps to a 9-0 lead, a guy steals the ball from Smitty . . . easy lay-up, Davis comes from behind and stuffs him. That got our guys going. What a season that turned out to be.

While this is a Bill Walton highlight video from the Trailblazers championship finals vs Philly, there are a ton of Johnny Davis plays as well. Especially in the clincher where JD makes several layups and even sets a screen for Walton to take and make a midrange jumper:
