Against St. Joes's the Davidson guards were horrible. It shows that on any given night the players might have their A or D game. More often, the A games seem to be at home and the D games are on the road.

Our guards better bring their best D, and Cunningham and Obi must/should dominate and score 40+ points. Grady is a tough matchup with his size, driving and shooting.

And Jon Axel Gudmundsson has some serious range.

It wasn’t just the Davidson guards scoring. Davidson shut down SBU in the 2nd half. Bonnie’s could not miss in the first half but couldn’t hit the broad side of the barn in the 2nd half. Davidson packed it in with a zone. I would expect to see the same thing against the Flyers.

When we play Davidson, it’s going to be a real battle of Inside (us) vs. Outside (them). It’ll be interesting to see if AG takes the “best defense is a good offense” strategy, and forces them to stop our strength (Josh, Obi, Ryan), or if he takes the “defense wins championships” strategy, and focuses on stopping Gudmundsson and Grady. If it’s the latter, then Davis and Cohill will need to drink their OJ and take their vitamins, because I can’t see anyone else successfully throttling Davidson’s wings.
And that will be a game that could highlight the loss of Jhery. If we had him available, he’d provide the ideal combination of length and agility to contain Grady.

To me Gudmundson is the bigger concern. I’m okay with Davis/Cohill on Grady but Crutcher on Gudmundson scares me.

Good news is Rhode Island thumps St Louis this afternoon. Bad news is we have to play at St Louis and Rhode Island this week.

I agree. My point was, I agree that Davis and Cohill should keep Grady from going off, but I’d love to throw Matos in the mix, so we could have 3 defenders to take turns guarding 2 scorers. As it is, Grady and Gudmundsson average 37 and 36 minutes per game, respectively, and I can’t see anyone else on our active roster successfully defending either of these guys. So, to defend against those 2, our 3 smallest scholarship players could get as little as 20 minutes off, combined. That’s a concern.

If they finish this season below .500, it’ll be the first time that’s happened since the 1995-96 season. To put that in perspective:
-Travis Steele was in 8th Grade.
-Edwin Young and Mark Ashman were All-State players as seniors in high school. And
-None of the players on our current roster were alive.
Yes, Dr. Schadenfreude is a friend of mine. No, I’m not sorry.

Looks like the Sooners are gaining steam. Ouch. So much for that being a “really good loss”. It’s rapidly coming down into the ranks of “decent”. And, given when it happened, with our relative youth and short bench, rather understandable.

Maybe it’s good that we played Richmond when we did. In the last couple of weeks, they’ve knocked-off both SLU & GM, 2 teams in the upper half of the A10 standings.
Also, it looks like we may have beaten Duquesne twice, with that loss to St. Bonnie on their home court.
Finally, Fordham smokes UMass by 18 in Amherst? To paraphrase Yogi Berra, 1 word: youneverknow.

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching ST Joes take it to STL. 2:58 left and the score is 82 - 59. StL will be 6-5 in the A10.
Final 91-61 Martelli's father died Wednesday and his team played great for him.

Flyers beat Joes but lost to SLU. Granted Joes was at home and SLU on the road. A10 tourney will be scrap shoot for everyone.

Final 91-61 Martelli's father died Wednesday and his team played great for him.

St L coach has to banging his head, and his dog's head, against the wall. They lose four straight, get sky high and easily handle UD, and then fall real flat last night. Hopefully, he is also looking in the mirror. Problem is he recruited a bunch of physical athletes who are marginal basketball players.

At halftime of the Saint Joe's vs Saint Louis game, the coverage crew gushed over Obi Toppin, calling him a high NBA prospect.

Actually SLU did not play a whole lot different than they did against Dayton. Hit the offensive boards. Played scrappy.
St Joes just shot the ball like we should have.

So Richmond has won 3 of 4 (2 of “blowout” style), with wins over SLU on the road and George Mason at home and their loss being at home to LaSalle. Schizophrenia?!?!

Xavier loses their 6th straight game.
Simply put, they chocked. They did nothing right the last 5 minutes of the game.
Wright State would have no problem beating that team. Handily.

And what seems to me to be almost inconceivable is that 8 of the 10 teams in the Big East are still below .500 in the conference. The 3rd Place team is 5-6 in conference play. Unless something changes fast, the Big East could get anywhere from 2 to 7 NCAA bids, depending on how other tumblers fall. That’s the definition of parity.

It’s an absolute joke that a team with a 4-8 conference record going into the OSU game was still considered to be in the mix for an at-large bid. Unfortunately, P5 schools have the luxury of losing multiple games and making the tournament. Total bullsh#t!

Watched that game. Began to think, the Dayton team from yesterday would have crushed both of those teams. But it's all about matchups.

I've been saying it for a few years now that wins and losses for P5 schools are becoming less and less important than efficiency and other advanced stays.

As Archie (aka Hue Jackson) stated: "We need to keep getting better." It appears to me that despite that anomaly at MSU, they keep getting worse.

In another game of note yesterday, USF won their 5th straight game (they had only won 4 conference games in the last two years combined). They play UCF Wednesday night to potentially move into a bye spot for the AAC tournament. BG has things trending in the right direction down there.

As I posted on here a few weeks ago, DePaul is steadily improving...IMO, not surprising that they were able to win somewhere where we have not been able to win in a long time...they are kenpom #97, x is kenpom #112.
Kind of makes me wonder why Purnell did not do better there. They are doing better now that he is gone.

I saw an article the other day about the amazing turnaround by USF this season.
Contrary to popular belief, BG has some good coaching capabilities. He did a couple of things well. Is he perfect? No. Could he have done a better job at UD? Yes.
I’m glad he is having success in Tampa.

BG was not a great coach at UD. But it is now several years later and his second coaching stint. Just like Grant, and most human beings, BG has learned and changed, and may become a great coach.

I'll always appreciate BG for taking a different job which allowed us to hire Archie. BG underachieved greatly here.
UD fans' disdain for Archie will always be a complete mystery to me. BG left UD for a power conference job too

Dayton gave both the first shot at being a head coach.
I think the difference is that BG loved UD and Dayton. When he got the GT offer, he wasn't encouraged to stay (no counter offer is what I have heard).
I do not have disdain for AM, but he was waiting for the chance to go. He got a generous counter offer to stay, he went.
BG became a Dayton guy and I will always wish him well.

I'll take Archie's results over BGs results any day! It was his methods, denials, cover-ups and ethics that I despised. To some, that matters. To others, not so much. I get that. Why others don't get it is troublesome.

This is BG's 2nd gig after leaving UD. My feelings now are a little different than when he first left. In the future I might pull for an Archie coached Tulane team too.

OP gets a lot of credit for the rebuilding job he did at UD (which he should) but even BG won a NCAA tournament game in his career while OP never did and was upset his last four trips losing as a #4, #5, and twice and a #7 seed

And is 1-5 in games decided by 10pts or less in that stretch. Clearly he has no idea what he's doing at the end of games to close contests out. Gets outcoached almost every time. The guy is a moron.

Just because you didn’t like his style of basketball doesn’t make him a bad coach. Yeah his brand looks ugly at times but man he won a lot of games against P5 opponents. His win % was just 4% below Archie. And he also represented the community and program better than any other public figure during his tenure. He recruited well and had us playing strong teams outside the conference (not including early season tournaments).

To think that BG did not have aspirations past UD like Archie is dreaming. Both coaches looked to move up. Archie just had a higher ceiling. Both coaches were very loyal to UD during their tenure.
I never heard a bad word about UD from either.
Archie has a more driven, quirky personality. Don’t confuse that with disloyalty.
BGs record of off court activity was not spotless. There were a number of cover ups during his tenure. Management of off court behaviors was not hidden from senior UD leadership with both coaches.

I think you misread my post. "Not a great coach" does not equal bad coach, just makes him a good coach (an okay coach), not an excellent or great coach. Glad UD had higher aspirations for their coach and teams. Nothing wrong with his style of basketball? No style points in basketball.

I agree here. I could understand universal hatred for JOB, but I would think that BG and AM would both be looked at equally, love them or hate them.

Some very interesting midweek games in the A10 this week, with potential implications for our place in the standings:
-Davidson at Fordham. Which Fordham will show up? The one that whacked UMass in Amherst by 18, or the one that lost to LaSalle at home?
- SLU at GW. Which SLU will show up? The one that stole our lunch money a week ago, or the one that got flattened at Hawk Hill this weekend?
- Duquesne at LaSalle. Duquesne is having a pretty good season, but they’re only 3-3 away from home, and LaSalle is at .500 in conference play.
- Richmond at VCU. The money will be on VCU to win pretty easily, but the Spiders have been playing better lately. Might be more of a contest than many people think it will be.

Richmond vs VCU seems to always be a "throw out the records" game, regardless of where it's played.

3-3 road record is pretty good. The Flyers are 4-2 and I believe have the best road record in conference.

Wow, Virginia must have ticked off the ACC schedulers. To have to play Duke on Sat, and turn right around and go to UNC on Monday is nasty, but they won.
Bet Archie wishes he has Mr. Guy.

They're probably "blowing the curve" on the conference GPA, with Duke going full speed ahead with "1 & Done" players and UNC being, well, UNC. How dare UVA actually have Student-Athletes?

Mack completely choked. The guy had no clue what he was doing when it counted late in the game. Hes the one making $4M a year. Anyone thats blows a 23-pt lead at home with 9 minutes to go does not know what hes doing. They should probably fire him right now and get a new guy in before the season is over and limit the damage.

I was torn between seeing Mack lose or watching Coach K sulk as he walks through the handshake line after a loss...two of my favorite things in life.

Louisville should have hired from within. Would have been much better of with an assistant coach on Pitino's staff. Those guys made the right calls.

One of the themes in the Dayton thread on the RI board was what a mistake it is to hire an assistant in order to keep a recruiting class. Gave me a chuckle.

I'll resume this argument probably over the off-season, I know that you can't wait for that, lol, don't feel like debating it further at the moment.
Suffice it to say that I am not the only one that subscribes to this line of thinking.
Below article is a good summary of the topic, and I think it also applies to VCU and Butler.

VCU has hired guys connected to Shaka on the last two hires but not really hiring within. Jordan for Butler was gone for a number of years before he came back.
Hiring from within works if you've got the right guy. New Mexico promoted Noodles Neal when Alford left and they tanked. Tulsa promoted John Phillips after Buzz Peterson left and he ran the program into the ground. Randy Peele got promoted after Gregg Marshall left Winthrop for Wichita State and tanked.
There's really one hiring strategy that the evidence says doesn't work

I'm flabbergasted that you point to XU at this time. Their record is worse than UD's last year and I remember how much you bashed AG last year. Why are you giving Steele a pass when you wouldn't give the same to AG?
Ironic that one of the returning players for XU who "praised the Steele hiring" was Kaiser Gates. He promptly took his ball and moved on to Europe to play this season...so much for continuity!

Check their schedule. They played an amazingly soft one to get that record. Be surprised if they win more than two more this year.

I am hoping/sensing some sarcasm on the Chris Mack posts.
Yes, last night was an epic meltdown. He was helpless down the stretch and couldn’t come up with answers, using all of his timeouts to stem the bleeding but was to no avail.
Mack is a solid recruiter and really good coach. He’s actually a pretty good dude too. Really down to earth and still hangs with his dudes from high school. May not be a popular opinion on this board, but pretty valid from my experience and observation.
A couple of points here:
I recall a national championship winning coach blowing a 10 point lead to Duke with like 1 minute to play.
Had Louisville held on last night, Mack was probably in the top 3/4 for National Coach of the Year, if not the front runner. Even with the debacle, he remains in contention.

Lost 3 of their last 4. 8-4 in conference. 8 losses to date. National coach of the year? Over Tennessee, Nevada, Gonzaga, UVA? Nah!

I watched some of the Xavier game tonight, and I gotta be honest, Xavier's streak of hiring good head coaches might finally be over, they very well may have missed with the Travis Steele hire. Even though hiring TS was IMO, a low-risk, sensible hire, there is at least some risk involved no matter who you hire. Mack, Miller, Matta, and Prosser went through some struggles, so we will see.
There is no such thing as a can't-miss hire.
This might be an opportunity for UD to close the gap.
The transition from assistant coach to hc can be difficult as I do think you have to sort of transition from sort of being the players' friend as an assistant to being more of their boss as a hc.
He is a rookie hc, so there will be a learning curve, and it is very early in his head coaching career, and he very well may improve and work out in the end, but, boy oh boy, at this stage of the season, their offense just flat out does not look that good at all at times. Not a lot of ball movement, not a lot of off-the-ball movement, too much stagnation/1 on 1-type play, don't get the ball inside to their bigs enough, poor shot selection, and questionable lineups and substitution patterns.
They got lucky tonight with Creighton throwing the ball away near the end of regulation.
And he leaves 3 of his best players, including his best player on the team, on the bench for the entire overtime period? What in the world is he thinking?
So, IMO, there has been a significant drop off in coaching talent so far from Mack to TS.
I have to honestly say that X is significantly underachieving this year.
We'll see what the future holds.

No doubt, see previous post.
Look, I will admit that there is no foolproof way to do hiring, if there was, then everybody would be doing the same thing.
There is no guarantee that one of Archie's assistants would work out, just as there is no guarantee that AG is going to work out.
IMO, hiring one of Archie's assistants was the way to go, that approach had worked out for our peers VCU, Butler, and Xavier, I see no reason why it would not work for us. Archie displayed a high level of acumen, and it is my belief that one of more of his assistants would have been able to continue our upward trajectory, but obviously, reasonable people can disagree about all this.

Disagree, Wade was an assistant for SS at VCU for a several years, Rhoades was an assistant at VCU for WW for several years, Jordan was an assistant to Lickliter at Butler for several years. While not direct in-house hires, the school had familiarity with the coach.
That's the trick: how do you know when you have the right guy? You never know. To a degree, I will agree that it is all a crap shoot, but when 3 of our peers make several successful, similar, in-house-type hires, then I think that points to that as being a lower-risk, likely successful approach.
You listed examples of in-house assistants that did not work out, but you did not list all of the numerous examples of in-house-type assistants that did work out: Gillen, Prosser, Miller, Mack, Smart, Wade, Rhoades, Grant, Lickliter, Stevens, Holtmann, and Jordan.
I would venture to guess that in-house assistants have worked out much more often than they have failed.

Ironic that one of the returning players for XU who "praised the Steele hiring" was Kaiser Gates. He promptly took his ball and moved on to Europe to play this season...so much for continuity!

See previous post, I am not giving him a pass. X is 12-13 right now, Grant was 14-17 last year, we will see what the final results are.
No doubt, he is struggling right now, but numerous other rookie head coaches have struggled early in their career, but they eventually worked past their struggles and became successful in the end. We will just have to wait and see. I am willing to give TS a bit more slack because he is a rookie.
Look, my complaint with Grant is that I just was not impressed with the job that he did at Alabama, and I feel that we could have done better. However, his Kenpom numbers IMO are indicating that he is open to changing his approach, which does give me some unexpected hope that he will not have Alabama-type results here.
I was not at all expecting him to change his approach, I am glad that he has learned from his past mistakes and is showing growth as a hc.

If Archie's assistants were ready for a prime time NCAA at-large caliber head coaching position, why didn't they put in resumes' after Archie left and take such a job and stop being a second or third wheel on another staff? One guy took a HS job before latching back on to college, and the others remain assistants too.
Seems like the opinion is universal: they arent ready.

It can work out but it wasn't going to work out with all of the second fiddle coaches that were on his staff.
Yes, in a perfect world a program has some continuity with a HC grooming a AC to take over. That wasn't the case with Archie.
Go talk to insiders. Go talk to anyone close to the program that isn't just a messageboard poster and you will quickly find out that none of them were ready or desirable to take over a program. Sure...they may have been able to coach, but there is more than just coaching when you take over a program.
As Chris mentioned...If these guys were so hot, why haven't they had any big time offers? Why haven't they had any low level offers? UD isn't some second rate program. Grant was and still is the better option than ANYONE on Miller's staff. Also find one on Archie's staff that is more well rounded and qualified than Solomon as an assistant? He has done more in his career than anyone on Miller's staff and more than Miller had prior to coming to UD.
