Smile MSOC: Big Second Half Shreds IPFW 5-0

A 1-0 halftime lead ballooned in the second half with the help of four additional tallies as the Dayton Flyers waxed IP-Fort Wayne 5-0 at Baujan Field -- a rescheduled make-up game previously canceled due to unplayable conditions. The Flyers improve to 5-6-2 while the Mastodons suffer their worst beating of the season and fall to 7-5-0.

Both sides were a bit sloppy in the opening minutes of the first half as each team took inventory of their comparative strengths and weaknesses. What was readily apparent was the contrast between IPFW's solid record and the overall level of play. Either their record was overstating their case, or they were vastly under-performing in the opening minutes. A third possible option was UD's level of play affecting the arithmetic, and after a while this proved to be a part of the overall answer.

The Flyers were eventually quicker to the ball in all areas of the field, using their anticipation skills to win possession and gradually exert control on the run of play. Neither team proved overly dangerous in the opening minutes, but UD eventually created a few seams in IPFW's back line and had chances to get on the scoreboard first. A nifty baseline turn resulted in a slotted ball to the six yard line, but Kennedy Nwabia was unable to finish the terrific opportunity directly in front of the goal mouth. Dayton also threaded a couple dangerous balls behind an IPFW defender, allowing UD's wing players to curve a run toward goal with the ball in front of them. The Mastodons managed to cover their tracks however, but not without some drama.

IPFW countered a bit later with a strong run inside the right corner of the Flyer goal box. A Mastodon player won position beyond the last defender and went to the ground on a UD challenge, but the referee chose not to award a penalty kick. We've seen softer takedowns given far more credibility -- whether the IPFW player completely fabricated the takedown is unknown. Regardless, UD caught a bit of a break.

A bit of good fortune opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Bennett Lehner put a shot on goal from 15yds out that was slow and direct -- though unlikely to find the net due to all the congestion in the box. Somehow, it got past a couple IPFW defenders to the surprise of Mastodon GK Jorge Trijillo who was shielded on the play. Unable to track the ball properly from the boot of Lehner, he misjudged it and the ball tucked under his arms to put UD up 1-0. Credit to Lehner for putting something on frame inside the goal box -- good things happen when players do just that. Still, it was not defended well.

Lehner's goal would prove to be the lone score of the first half. Stats were relatively even with shots at 7-7 while corner kicks were 2-0 in favor of the Flyers. Stats aside, it felt like Dayton was the much better team.

The second half turned out to be a slaughter. And like the first goal, the next four goals were a result of excellent Flyer tactics and some suspect IPFW defending.

Dayton didn't waste much time opening the floodgates either. Alvaro Navarro took advantage of an excellent throw-in deep into the Mastodon goal box. Nwabia settled at the near post and deflected the ball to Navarro for the point-blank putaway in the 51st minute. Again, IPFW's soft defending directly in front of their own box didn't hurt UD's chances on the sequence.

Ten minutes later, Nwabia cashed in for himself on a header courtesy of a Dayton corner kick to give the home team a commanding 3-0 advantage. Taneski got the assist.

Taneski then called his own number in the 72nd minute when the Flyers were taken down in the box and award a PK. He tucked it just inside the post to make the score 4-0 and the rout was officially on. The referee's decision to award the PK felt odd considering the precedent set in the first half. Both takedowns were similar, both of the players fouled threw in some Screen Actor's Guild play-acting, but the location of the fouls in the box were not identical and may have been the overriding difference.

By this point in the match, IPFW's shape completely fell apart, and so too their overall effort. The run of play was dominated by Dayton over the final 15 minutes as they pressed forward looking for more goals. They would eventually find the back of the net one more time in the 76th minute on an own-goal courtesy of a deflected Flyer cross from the left side. The mishandled clearance rolled into the Mastodon net to make it 5-0.

Match stats favored UD in shots 18-15 (7-5 on goal), while corner kicks were 5-2 in Dayton's favor. While the boxscore suggests a fairly even match -- or perhaps a competitive run-of-play -- that wasn't the case as the Flyers dominated most facets over the last 70 minutes and were clearly the better team. IPFW took 15 shots but most never seriously threatened the Flyer goal mouth. GK Federico Barros made five saves on the night, but the only one worth remembering was a diving mitt save after UD coughed up a ball in the defensive third.

That mistake was the only real gaff of the match for the Flyer defense. Lalas Abubakar made lunch meat out of his target forward responsibility all game. Ben Emery, Coletun Long, and David Lianes were equally up to the task and held their shape especially well over 90 minutes. While the offense scored five goals, the Flyer defense may have outplayed them -- the Mastodon offense was practically ornamental in no small part to UD's tight marking and clean play out of the back line. It was IPFW's worst beating of the year and while the margin of victory probably wasn't entirely indicative of the talent difference, Dayton was a solid two or three goals better even without IPFW's help.

Dayton hits the road for a match at St. Bonaventure on Saturday evening.
