Smile MSOC: Dayton Outpaces Rhode Island 2-0

The Dayton Flyers got a brace from Michael Frasca and held on in the second half after playing shorthanded, topping the Rhode Island Rams 2-0 Saturday evening at Baujan Field. A goal in each half did the damage, and UD's defense overcame Lalas Abubakar's second yellow card of the night to improve to 6-8-2 (2-3-1). URI falls to 5-10-1 (2-4).

The match started off with some competitive soccer as both teams took turns pushing forward on offense. The Flyers had the slightly more dangerous run of play, but the Rams countered well with quick transition balls attempting to catch Dayton's defense napping.

Back and forth the action went without much sustained possession by either squad. Teams were tightly marked and unable to free themselves loose. Both teams had additional trouble digging the ball out of the strong side of the field and switching the ball to the weak side where teammates were awaiting to attack into free space. Much of the first half was played up and down the right side of the Flyer offense as the left side was largely forgotten for extended stretches of the first half. The compacted play along the right side limited UD's ability to find gaps in URI's defensive half of the field -- there were just too many players bunched up to thread balls through the tight spacing.

Still, UD generated some chances. On two occasions they were able to turn the corner along the right baseline and feed a ball to the center of the Ram goal box. Michael Frasca made the Rams pay for not clearing a ball away in the 28th minute, sprinting onto a deflected ball about 12 yards out that he subsequently pounded home to put UD up 1-0.

The remainder of the first half remained hit-or-miss at times, but UD continued to generate the better opportunities on offense. Rhody's best chances came on free kicks and crosses in the box as they were mostly ineffective at working the ball on the ground and beating Dayton's back line with wall passes or dribble drives.

The first half ended 1-0 with URI owning a 7-3 edge in shots while corner kicks were 1-1. Most of the URI shots however were from long distance and not very threatening.

The second half added more offensive chances for both teams as the run of play opened up. Frasca didn't waste much time after the restart to give the Flyers another shot in the arm, putting away a header in front of the left post from 5yds out to make the score 2-0 in the 49th minute. The Rams were now in trouble.

Unfortunately for Rhody, their best attacking player came out of the back line as left fullback Peder Kristiansen did well to anticipate passes, pick off possession, and dribble upfield into free space. The Rams were so thin on game-changing players on offense that Kristiansen took nearly all of the free kicks deep into Flyer territory as well -- even on the opposite side of the field or near the Dayton goal box. While his service was excellent, his teammates didn't offer much help. The UD defense continued to push away all the important clearances and keep the score 1-0.

As the second half continued, the physicality of the match intensified and the referee was forced to flash the plastic on numerous occasions to keep things under control. A small fisticuffs among both teams broke out a short time later as players started getting chippy -- committing needless fouls and play-acting on others to draw the whistle. After the two teams settled down, Dayton once again assumed control of the match.

That is, until defender Lalas Abubakar picked up his second yellow card in less than five minutes on nearly identical tackles in the Flyer defensive third. The calls were probably legitimate, but it forced Dayton to play a man short for the remaining 25 minutes -- and without arguably their most consistent performer.

To UD's credit, they held up extremely well despite the 10 vs. 11 disadvantage. At times, Dayton even looked more dangerous as an attacking team. They were able to get deep into URI territory along the touch lines and send balls to the far post. While no further scoring resulted, the possession ate up more clock and forced the Rams to re-start deep into their defensive zone.

The Rams pinged the left post on one occasion, while UD cleared a ball off the goal line on another. Those chances were URI's best scoring opportunities of the second half. Dayton came away from both unscathed. They would ultimately protect the two-goal lead into the waning moments and eventually salt the match away.

Second half stats once again favored URI in shots 11-5 and corner kicks 4-1. The game stats were misleading however. UD had fewer scoring opportunities, but much better chances overall. The Rams were overly ambitious on far too many attempts -- despite the 18-8 advantage in shots overall. Shots on goal were much closer (5-3). For UD to score on two of three shots on goal is tough to beat.

Dayton remains at Baujan Field to play Duquesne next Saturday in the home finale at 7pm. UD's seniors will be recognized before the match.
