2018 A-10 Week 3

DAYTON:
vs. Washington / @ Pittsburgh / vs. Kennesaw State

The Flyers are starting to look strong with wins over College of Charleston and Miami (OH). All of the Flyers matches this weekend will be tough. Pittsburgh swept VCU last weekend at Seton Hall. Dayton's performance in this match will be a good gauge of how we compare to VCU at this point in the season. But the first match is against the Washington Huskies. I actually think the Flyers have a chance in this one. Washington's home win in 4 sets against Iowa doesn't impress me. It looks very similar to a Dayton win over Miami. The Flyers get a chance against a west coast team on a neutral court. I also looked at the Washington roster. They have only 1 senior, and a few juniors. At this early point in the season, OH Samantha Dreschel is only hitting 0.080. She is probably the 2nd OH, so her counter part is Alli Papesh, and Papesh is hitting 0.178 so far. The Flyers will need to go on some runs while she is in the front row since she has not yet been consistently effective.

I'm a little worried with Washington's serve compared to Dayton's. The Flyers really need to decrease errors and increase the aces. The service errors to services ace ratio for the Flyers looks very bad. Junior OH, Kara Bajema seems like the Lauren Bruns of the Huskies. She will take a lot of attempts. She currently swings 29% of the attacks. That's actually higher than Brun's percentage of attempts. The Flyer block will need to take advantage of this imbalance.

Kennesaw State looks good. They beat High Point at home and beat Samford on the road. Kennesaw has a 6-0 record right now. A win here would be a big help to the RPI.

VCU:
@ Florida State / vs. Florida A&M / vs. Southern Mississippi

The Rams (black and gold to clarify), have got off to a rocky start. They have only 2 wins, over Oklahoma and Georgetown, in 7 tries. VCU beat the Hoyas at home and Georetown is only picked to finish 8th in the Big East. It's a ok win, but I'm not sure its even a resume win. VCU out hit the Hoyas 0.218 to 0.071, but actually got less kills than Georgetown. (G-46 K / VCU-43) The Rams won by blocking the Hoyas and forcing them into errors. Georgetown committed 35 attack errors and VCU only 14. 13 of the Georgetown attack errors were blocks by VCU, the rest were self inflicted, or were the Hoyas trying to avoid the block. Gina Tuzzola, Right Side hitter for VCU, hit 0.480 (13 of 25 with only 1 error). Jasmin Sneed, Middle for VCU, struggled hitting only 0.083 ( 3 for 12 with 2 errors).

VCU will travel south and try to get on the right track. Florida State is off to a similar start with only one win against TCU and 5 set loses to Cincinnati and Colorado State. While I hope VCU can get some wins for the strength of the A-10, Southern Mississippi looks like more even competition for VCU. S. Miss. has 5 set victories against Samford and Ark. Little Rock and 5 set losses to Ohio State and Ole Miss. In between VCU plays Florida A&M who looks very bad. FAMU got swept the first weekend, and info about their 2nd weekend isn't even posted yet. It must be embarrassing. Worst case scenario, VCU comes away with a 3 set sweep of the FAMU Rattlers. Florida State and Southern Mississippi looks strong. Could be another tough weekend for VCU.

SAINT LOUIS:
vs. Central Michigan / vs. Green Bay / @ Indiana State

The Billikens scheduled real tough out of the gate. They have won only one set so far against Kansas State. They won the 3rd set against K State 25-20. K State was picked 5th in the Big 12, so there is reason to be a little optimistic. Full Disclosure: VCU's 3 set win over Oklahoma was against the Big 12 team picked to finish 8th. Back to SLU, JR OH Sien Gallop hit 0.239 against Kansas State, Western Kentucky, and Marquette. That is some really good competition. Combined with Sophmore Maya Taylor, SLU has some dangerous outside hitters.

The first match for SLU will be very telling. SLU will play Central Michigan and give us a comparison with La Salle, who played the Chippewas just last week. If the Bilikens can't get a victory this early afternoon, its clear they will have to fight for every A-10 win. I think SLU will definitely leave with a win vs. Green Bay, and I think SLU should be favored against CMU (especially given the awful scheduling for CMU). The road match against Indiana State looks to be the most difficult. Indiana State is showing all 6 tournament matches will be streamed on ESPN+. Even the non-Sycamore matches.

DAVIDSON:
vs. UNC Asheville / vs. Charleston Southern / @ College of Charleston

The Wildcats have the 2nd most wins in the A-10 right now and the 3rd highest RPI in the A-10 right now. Their win total should continue to rise since they have winnable matches against UNCA and Char. Southern despite the Charleston Southern match being essentially a road match. We also get to see Davidson match up against College of Charleston, which will be kinda interesting. The most important one is probably the match against UNC Asheville given their proximity to Davidson. That's an important match for Davidson's strength in the region.

The Wildcats are no fluke, but they are still way behind Dayton and VCU. They have some key players allowing them to win they matches they should win and avoid upsets. They run a 6-2 like the Flyers with Mason Rooney playing the Brook Westbeld role as a tall setter who also attacks as a Right Side. She won A-10 player of the week in the 2nd week. The other setter is 5'11" Sophomore Sydney Champaigne playing the Bridget Doherty role. Middle hitter Ellie Crosley is converting more than half the time with a 0.510 H%. She has 58 kills with 102 attempts and only 6 errors. Davidson currently out hitting opponents 0.234 to 0.225 but being out blocked 1.88 blks/s to 1.72 blk/s.

LA SALLE and RHODE ISLAND are both hosting this weekend. The Explorers matches looks much easier (NJIT, Kent State, and Rider) compared to Rhode Island's line up of (Army, New Hampshire, and Yale). I expect La Salle to roll over NJIT. La Salle beat NJIT in 2017 by a 41 point margin. I see no reason why that won't continue with La Salle at home. La Salle is 8-3 against Rider since 2006, but hasn't played them since 2014. The La Salle vs. Kent State match should be the most interesting. If La Salle can beat Kent State, the win against DePaul won't look like an outlier. On the other side, two of Rhode Island's matches are rematches of last year. The Rams (blue and white to clarify) lost to Yale in 4 and lost to New Hampshire in 5 last year. Rhode Island vs. New Hampshire could be good. La Salle is streaming their first two matches (NJIT and Kent State) on ESPN+. It doesn't look like any RI matches will be streamed.

In the Pittsburgh Invitational, Kennesaw State and Pittsburgh are going to a 5th set. KSU wins 1st and 4th at 23 and 20, while Pittsburgh gets the middle two at 24 and 16. Both teams are 6-0.

Dayton takes 1st set from Pitt 25 -20. 2nd set to Pitt 28-26.

Then Dayton took the night off losing set 3 25-14 and set 4 25- 7.

Looked really good first two sets like top 25.... then couldn't beat sisters of the poor after intermission. Work in progress.

Two weeks in a row we play lights out the totally crumble. Last week we recovered in 3Rd match. Not so sure we can do that tomorrow. Thus team while a work in progress is a head scratcher.

Interesting Becky covered WA match and Kennesaw match but no write up or coverage of Pitt match. Was hopng to hear what happened in sets 3 an 4.

Watched sets 1 and 2 then we lost power. Couldn't believe those scores. Expected an injury or somehing monumental.

I think the last 2 posts in the WA Thread pretty much sum up what happened in the Pitt Match.

Thanks I knew it had to be monumental and I'd say that qualified.
We're the only team to sweep Kennesaw.
Regardless of the results they played extremely well. Bold well for A10 play. Both VCU and SLU are not fairing too well in non conference.

Dayton's win over Kennesaw State adds to a growing resume. Its a real shame they couldn't pull the upset over Washington. I think Washington is closer to a ranking of 25 than where they are now, but a good performance from Dayton.

VCU got a nice win against Southern Mississippi, but Dayton's wins against CoC and Kennessaw still look more impressive. At the start of this season I though UD and VCU were neck and neck, or a slight advantage to VCU. At this point, Dayton looks like the favorite based on the way both teams are playing.

After that, the conference is bad. I really thought Rhode Island would be terrible this year, but they might be the 3rd best team. Until a loss to Yale(5-1), Rhode Island had a 4 match win streak going. Rhode Island's wins against Columbia, New Hampshire, and Army give me reason to believe they are in the A-10 3-6 range rather than the 7-10 range. Rhode Island's Freshman middle Mariah Paulette, is providing a strong block (1.05 blks/s) and hitting 0.287.

Davidson is also starting to look they too could be at the top of the rest. Davidson got swept by College of Charleston, but took care of business against UNC Asheville and Charleston Southern.

The SLU Billikens have only 1 win on the season, a sweep of Central Michigan. That win give SLU a slight edge compared to La Salle, but SLU fell in 5 at Indiana State.

GW seems like the hardest team to figure out at this point. Their 5 set win at LIU Brooklyn was fairly impressive. The LIU Brooklyn Blackbird are normally a front runner in the NEC, but GW also got swept by Holy Cross. For comparison, Rhode Island beat Holy Cross at Holy Cross. Duquesne is a little confusing too. They upset Bowling Green, but also looked real bad against Youngstown State.

I think the A-10 looks something like this now. The big gap was intentional. Duquesne has a chance to miss the A-10 tournament and SLU will be in a battle to earn one of the lower seeds.
