GM Match
Friday night showdown for our first win in the A10. Not to be disrespectful, but UD has the better team. This will be a chance to rest some players who are banged up and give some younger players court time. I’m not sure Brooke is 100%. Her shoulder was taped last weekend, but I was more concerned every time she went to the floor after a dig she seemed to get up slow. I’m expecting to see a lot of Josie and Bridget tonight.
Will also be a great opportunity to really work both Sierra on the right, Molly in the middle and if Olivia’s knees held up after playing some last weekend, we should see her in the middle. We will probably see Maura wear the Libero Jersey at sometime tonight with Liz and Carrissa playing DS.
Jordan was wearing a boot at Pitt, but not this last weekend. She might be available which would be great. I’m not sure about Mikaylah because I don’t know anything about her injury. It would be nice to see all these players on the court this weekend, but the important thing is to get them all healthy before they try to come back.
Looking for a 3-0 sweep by any combination of players. Go Flyers

I’ll post this here...because I’m too lazy to look up my post from this summer about rule changes.
I watched WI vs tOSU ealier this week. Both coaches at intermission complained about the change to 5 minutes. tOSU HC Carlson said it was the worst rule change ever. I wondered how the coaches would “ like” it. I hope for NCAAs they change it back to 15 minutes.

GM up 12-4. Yes you are reading the right. We committed 6 errors to start the match behind 0-6. Of their 12 points, 9 or 10 of them are UD errors.
Ladies...you do have to show up and play. I’m not too worried, but we need to get into this match.

18-11 GM. We got it down to 3 points on a run, but have fallen back again. I think we are hitting negative. This set will be hard to win. Can’t imagine TH will be happy.

TO GM up 19-16. We should have never been down 11-18, but it will be impressive if we win this set.

GM wins set 1 25-23. I would expect us to come out on a mission this second set and bury them. Time to learn how to clear your head and get very focused to play at a high level.

UD up 12-5. Still look a little scrappy, but starting to come around. Our serve has caused ten problems.

UD wins 25-15. But we missed our last 3 serves - all into the net as we were trying to serve short.
It’s 1-1 and we need to take care of business in the next set. It looks like the only player not available is Amelia who is in a boot and crutches. Everyone else appears to be in the playing jersey.
I do like this UNI look. It’s naby shorts and long-sleeve navy jerseys. When I saw it in person up at Pitts, it looked intimidating. We looked tough. Of course we didn’t scare GM in the first set tonight, but when you give them the first 6 points you don’t scare anyone so the uniform doesn’t matter.

3rd set GM up again 6-1. 5 of those are UD errors. We also dont seem to be swinging with authority like we have earlier in the year. This is all mental. Coming out of TO, Lauren swings with some power.

7-7. Molly is playing well. That should have been one of the goals tonight - to get Molly as much action as possible and see her get comfortable and increase her contribution after she was rushed into a starting role last week.

UD wins 25-19. Josie came in a set the last 5 points of the set. We had a couple miscues, but it wasn’t our setter. TH coaching up Papesh during the changeover. So far only two subs that aren’t in our rotation. I’m sure this is NOT what was planned. We need to get out to a big lead to get others in this match.

Now for the most important post of the night...
At Pitt asst coach Alyssa had some awesome red high-heeled pumps. She’s wearing them again tonight. I see Balice and Horsmon finally got the shoe memo because both are wearing red tennis shoes. It’s a good look by all 3 coaches.

GM hanging in with UD. UD up 14-12 but we need to find another gear. It’s all mental right now. LaSalle took a set from VCU.

UD up 21-16. UD playing like an average A10 team. Let’s hope the team learns from this night. They are better than how they’ve played.

UD wins 25-18 and 3-1.
Lesson #1 - everyone that we play will consider this their Super Bowl when they play the Flyers.
Lesson #2 - if you don’t come ready to play both physically and mentally anyone can and will upset you.
I’d love to say it’s a lesson the freshmen and sophomores needed to win, but it was a whole team issue tonight. If anyth8ng I think the younger players played pretty well. We need to clean up a bunch of things.
Congrats to GM on a nice effort. Use this match to springboard your conference season. Good luck the rest of the way.

Should St. Louis be worried? George Mason served aggressively and played some good back row D. Was GM just really pumped to play UD, or will they bring that same intensity and confidence to the SLU match?

The Flyers were not good early. That 6-0 GM start including a little bit of everything. Bad first passes. Bad 2nd passes if the first pass was good. The hitters were not keeping the ball in play. Mason built a lead off Dayton errors and the Flyers weren’t able to finish the comeback in the first.

I read the GM write up pre-match. Their coach was preaching they were starting 0-0 once conference play started. The OOC didn’t matter. I think their team really took that to heart. It was aided by the fact we started with 6 errors giving them a lead. And then we kept making errors for the first half of the first set. The first point was a block on Bruns. They are a bad blocking team and they stuff the best player in the A10 on the best team.
I think SLU is in trouble today. I watched them the first weekend without OH Maya Taylor - last year’s ROY. They were weak in all aspects of the game. I only got to watch about 30 minutes of one match last weekend. Maya is back and it helps, but they are still weak. I can’t even imagine how you have any mental positive fortitude at 1-12.
When SLU hired Anne Kordes years ago, she was an assistant at Illinois. She took the program to the NCAAs. They went back to an assistant at ILlinois hoping to catch fire in a bottle a second time when they brought in Kent Miller. He’s had good re ruining classes. He probably out-recruited UD at the end of the Sheffield era. But they haven’t been able to put it together on the court and this year they again expected to be good. Miller put together a tough schedule and said it should get them an at large bid if they didn’t win the A10. But, it’s just been a train wreak. They have struggled big time at both setter and Libero for a couple years. Unfortunately it’s probably time for a coaching change.
