Coach Tucker to retire at end of 2016

Can't say I'm surprised. Twenty five years 22 as head coach is a long time. Congrats to Coach Tucker for his many years of service and building the Flyers into a perennial power in Womens Soccer.

Bad news is we lose him. The good news is this is an opportunity to take us to a higher level. The recruiting has lagged a bit the last few years.

Considering this being the heart of the soccer season it would be very difficult to try to find a replacement when the best candidates are very preoccupied with their own season. Much akin to waiting for the the final four (mens basketball) before interviewing candidates still in the tournament.

I'm assuming UD is interested in a top tier D1 soccer replacement.

My hope is the new recruiting target will be bigger talented athletes. Too often heard how the likes of OSU/Cincy athletes were like 5'9" 150 lbs to our 5'5" 120 lb players. Only way to compete with the big girls is to have big girls too. Advancing in the NCAA requires bigger stronger talented athletes.

Let's say Bill Belichik decides to retire at the end if this season. If the Patriots start a search now, who gets permission to interview. No current NFL or college coaches. NFL teams usually won't even let assistants interview till their season is over let alone head coaches. Colleges often allow interviews between regular season and bowl games. Highly unlikely they keep a lame duck coach around a whole season.

This isn't much different. They can draw up lists of targets and maybe get some indications of interest. But really can't do much now. No coach will want to be linked to a new job one game into a season.

The write-up on daytonflyers says he has won 20 conference titles, a typo. Unless they were including regular season and tournament as separate trophies.

Regardless, I'd like to kind of steer this thread back into an appreciation instead of a look to the future which is really premature, nor a denigration of the undersized recruits. Having never formally met coach Tucker, I just have to say I'm in admiration of the success he has built here over the years, on both sides of the ball. Discussion about a replacement who can pick up where he left off, recruit even better than he can? Well... obviously you can hope for future trajectory to be upward. But those are some big shoes to fill.

Archie paid a heartfelt tribute to Coach Tucker on Sunday at the BB picnic. Tucker was there. Archie introduced him, spoke of his retirement and cited his accomplishments in building the Women's Soccer Program. And in closing, he thanked Coach Tucker for all the help Tucker had given to him and his staff when they arrived at Dayton. I sensed a great deal of respect and affection for Coach Tucker from Archie
