Overview
Head coach Brian Gregory has made slow and steady progress since taking over in 2004. Gregory is 144-78 with four post-season appearances (2-NIT, 2-NCAA) including three post-season appearances in a row. He’s steadily improved the talent and profile of the program.

"I had high-major schools looking at me as” said Dayton commitment LaDontae Henton, “but Dayton is a Top 25 team every year and consistently gets into the tournament.”

Gregory has a roster loaded with talent, experience and depth. The next step is to improve Dayton’s conference performance both in the regular season and in Atlantic City. Gregory is 60-49 in A10 play and hasn't made the semi-finals on the Conference Tournament since his first year.

Last season Dayton defended at an elite level because of Gregory’s scheme, a philosophy that pegs playing time to defensive effort and personnel. While Dayton should see a drop-off with the graduation of accomplished defenders London Warren, Marcus Johnson and Kurt Huelsman, history indicates they will still be an above average defensive team. Under Gregory, no Flyer team has finished worse than 111 in Pomeroy’s adjusted defensive rankings better than any other A10 team over that span.

The Flyers expect to more than make up the difference on the other side of the ball. With triple threat options at point guard in Juwan Staten and Josh Parker, the Flyers will be able to spread the floor with established shooters Luke Fabrizius (.407 3FG%), Chris Johnson (.349 3FG%) and Paul Williams (.351 3FG%). This should create space for forwards Chris Wright and John Benson and create a much improved and more versatile Flyer offense.

Spotlight On
Red-shirt junior Josh Parker transferred from Drake last year and will play an important role after sitting out the 2009-10 season. Parker was named to the Missouri Valley Conference’s Most Improved Team after averaging 10.7 points, 2.0 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game his sophomore year. Having practiced with the Flyers for a full season, Parker should have a strong grasp of the defense and offense allowing Gregory to work Staten into the rotation or play the hot hand. Parker will give the Flyers another perimeter threat (.432 3FG%) and should see time at shooting guard as well.

Projection
Dayton again has a challenging A10 pod with Xavier and St Louis both of whom should challenge for the regular season title. However the Flyers will face two other potential contenders, Richmond and Temple, at home.

Interior defense will be a concern with the stalwart Heulsman gone and a plethora of post players in the A10 that should challenge for All-League honors. The combination of senior Devin Searcy and sophomore Matt Kavanaugh should be good enough and even provide increased production on the offensive side.

Dayton will be suiting up two players at point guard who have yet to play a minute in a Flyers uniform, but with four upper-classmen in the starting lineup they won’t need to carry the scoring load. They will need to knock down the occasional triple and create scoring opportunities off the dribble. They’ll be surrounded by a bevy of shooters and have the luxury of one of the best finishers in the country lurking in the lane.

While Dayton does have questions at the point, Gregory should be able to rely on Josh Parker’s experience early in the season and ride the hot hand late. The Flyers will have a veteran starting line-up, experienced depth in the front court and four freshmen fighting over the scraps of playing time left over. Gregory will have the luxury of a mix-and-match attack on offense and the personnel (if not yet the experience) for another formidable defense. Dayton should be able to muster a .500 road conference record or better and defend their home court like they normally do en route to another NCAA Tournament appearance and top four finish in the A10.

Thanks Whacker.
I think BG's record is 150-80.
