Now that MW has received his release, does he still even have an offer from UD? Here is a quote from 247sports.com:
Richard Pitino's (Minnesota) staff has has extended an offer to local 2017 PG McKinley Wright this afternoon.
Wright is currently in the Top247 as a high 3-star prospect according to 247Sports Composite and No. 4 overall in the state of Minnesota. He holds other offers from Creighton, Kansas State, Illinois, Iowa State and Texas Tech.

I'm sure it was just to reaffirm the stance that MW should follow through on his original commitment to attend UD. I mean, D-I basketball recruiting is such a noble, honest, and sportsmanlike profession.

If the savior of our men's basketball program, Sir Mr. McKinley Wrong, decides to attend Dayton University there's no doubt a mass of middle-aged men will greet him at the airport, escort his greatness down I-75, parade him onto campus and move his belongings into THE palatial dorm that undoubtedly will don his name and likeness. Heck, these townies/groupies will probably do his homework for him, too! What a deal! McKinley...are you reading this! DU is 4 U...as your vanity license plates will assuredly prove.
But only if their mommies allow them out of the basement.
Your choice young man...errr, I mean your Highness.

I do not see all the hurt and surprise on this board. As I predicted on March 23, 2017 in the Recruit 2017 thread and long before AM took the Indiana job. MW will never be a Flyer I called it then and I stick by my prediction.

Seen this movie before
This will play out just like the LaDontae Henton deal. We will have a thread tracking McKinley's progress until he graduates from another Ed Cooley School of Business. We will also track the player that replaced MW and rationalize how he is light years better than the player he replaced. Concluding we weren't made after all. And finally the last thread will track MW's progress in the Uzbekistan pro league, lamenting what could have been at DU.
It's written in stone.

IMO if you look at the last number of examples of Flyers who backed out of their commitment and went elsewhere the majority of them in hindsight would admit that it probably wasn't the best decision. The UD experience is a great thing and the community and the support structure is not something that is easily replicated elsewhere. We will see if MW does indeed go elsewhere and if so in a few years will be able to reassess whether or not he made a good decision. Grass isn't always greener.

Know Your History
It is hard to believe that a recruit named Wright would turn his back on the Dayton Flyers. The Wright Brothers did well in Dayton transforming the bicycle into a flying machine. Then there was Chris Wright who carried the Dayton Flyers on his shoulders to soaring heights and created the best dunk in College basketball over a Marquette defender. Dayton has already named a park after McKinley and with a Grant in charge of the program how could any sane
18 year old named Wright turn away from 13,000 fans ready to scream and yell his name?

I'm not just thinking about guys who backed out as recruits, but those who transferred out too. Names like Spearman, Berry, Thomas, etc. Some of them did things that lost the university's support but they certainly didn't flourish elsewhere.
Staten from a pure Bball perspective did well at WVU and was addition by subtraction.

Adding to the list: Jason Osborne, Chris Alvarez, Big Des, Trent Meachum, and many others.
Frankly, most of those players were not all that great while at UD (if they even made it) and really only Henton, Staten and Meachum (arguably) went on to have solid careers elsewhere. We will never know if any of them would have been better served under BG/Archie and at UD than where they ended up, but we do know, that for the most part, UD ended up somewhere b/w Solid and great most seasons without them.

Henton is the most relatable. I believe he blew up a bit after his commitment to UD. Then took the opening when BG left.
If you include all transfers out too, it is a mixed bag. Some of those were pushed out. And in fairness, look at all the transfers in. Some worked out pretty darn good. In retrospect, I am sure a few wished they had gone somewhere else.

He won't get the grande treatment he's looking for at the Royal Palatial Estate unless he considers vacuuming, unloading the dishwasher, picking up Rudy the Wonderdog's 3X/day deposits, folding his laundry and making his bed worthy of his greatness.
No, he's better off at the Palatial Dorm where a bunch of old, fat men will cater to his every Royal - and unroyal - whim.

Why would we close the thread? It is about an uncommitted recruit, still considering UD, who plays a position of need, and is a Max Preps All-american Honorable Mention.
And despite what some people on this board would suggest, he is a high character kid. Yes - he is having doubts about coming here. And he probably isn't. Yes, he (or whoever wrote it) transposed two words in his announcement. But in the meantime some of us still want to discuss the situation.
If you don't want to read about it anymore...I've got a tip for you. STOP CLICKING THE THREAD TITLED "MCKINLEY WRIGHT".
There....that should help.

I can't believe there has been this many posts to this thread either and I must say I had to chuckle when I read rollo's synopsis which was #407, the first one from this morning!
However, I agree that the above post by T-Bone 84, the 8th one on the first day the thread was started on March 26th, says it best! The majority of us still want McKinley, but only if he wants to be a UD Flyer! After all, Jordan Davis wants to be a UD Flyer and you can't be True team unless every player is on board.
Even though McKinley mistakingly said Dayton University, when we defeated OSU in the first game of the NCAA the headline in the Dayton Daily News the following day read THE UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON!

I just heard from some well place insiders at UD that they have changed their long standing policy concerning statues honoring great Flyers. There will be a new area in front of UD Arena that will be a place of honor for these life size statues. The very first one will be of McKinley Wright. The second will be of Rollo, but that will take longer due to the added space needed for his head.

There....that should help.

How do you know he is a high character kid? I know some people up in Minnesota, including one with a son at Champlin Park and I am told there are some issues. Minor issues mind you, I not saying the kid is a criminal but it just seems every time a kid is coming to UD and can put two sentences together there is the obligatory "seems like a high character kid" post.

C'mon now. I would be with you if our coaching staff hadn't left. Or if he pulled a Staten and transferred after a year.
He didn't demand his release immediately. He waited for us to hire a new coach. He then waited to meet with the new coach in person. almost two weeks after AM left MW decided to pursue other options - which is totally normal in this scenario.
I don't think that is a reason to question his character.

I for one am not questioning his character as I don't know anything about his character, I am just wondering if the folks who say he has "high character" have a basis for that other than that he must be a great kid since he was going to come to Dayton.

I will add to that my deep thought of the day: My father always taught me that character is what you do when nobody is watching So by that definition, you would never know anyone's true character.

I agree MNFats. Some people here do not understand character and Minnesota. In castigating MW they are not just impugning MW but the whole state of Minnesota. Stereotyping is just wrong. This is a state that elected a comedian to be senator, some may say what a joke. This is a state that elected an out of work studio wrestler to be governor. My guess is if Rollo lived in Minnesota he could be governor or perhaps have the state changed to a kingdom with the full consent of the population. In any case many Ohioans fail to understand the Minnesotan and just react without giving the benefit of the doubt.
Please accept our apology.

Yes he had extremely high character, I mean thru-the-roof character, I mean as high as a rocket could travel type character when he gave shout outs to THE Dayton University whether via his tweeter, instagram, when speaking to a reporter,etc..It was only after the decision-wavering after our HC left, the "fake" letter he wrote or, rather, had his handlers write, and his decommit immediately following his meeting with AG that made him a douche bag to many...

Interestingly (or not) I'm much more Ohio than Minnesota. I just happen to live here now. Bengals fan. Reds fan. Knew I wanted to go to UD when I was 9 years old. I would love to move back to Ohio.
I agree with the notion that character is what you do when no one is looking. So yes - I can't speak to his character in detail. I'm going off the local coverage I have seen from him the last couple of years. The interviews he's done. He's stayed out of trouble. Seems like a good kid. And I love his leadership style on the court (I've watched several of his games).
I have a hard time when people on these boards feel the need to drag this kid through the mud when he had the audacity to change his mind when the circumstances at UD changed. I'm as disappointed as anyone that he changed his mind. Doesn't make him a bad person.

Just this week www.verbalcommits.com[/url] removed Dayton from the name of McKinley Wright! 2.5 stars!? Definitely a 3 or 4 star in my opinion, but we all know what opinions are like!

I did not see this posted...Clifton Moore just committed to Indiana yesterday, so IU is back over the limit, 1 over at 14...miscounted.

Not saying MW will come to UD or not, but with the departure of JC, one has to think that it improves the odds of MW coming here? Don't you think?

Incrementally so in my opinion for the moment. McKinley already knew there was huge opportunity for minutes at PG at UD. But at the moment it looks there are even more minutes available. So it probably makes some impression, however slight. But I do think AG will try to bring in a grad transfer to run the point, in which case McKinley might be looking at being a 3 year starter should he recommit to Dayton, which is still a very good opportunity.
But I really think the way this ends with McKinley hinges on a few unknowns:
1) Guys around the NCAA who declared for draft - who is really leaving, who is returning and which of the grad transfer NBA draft declarees are going to transfer schools.
Question 1: Does anyone know the date these players have to withdraw from draft to retain eligibility? We'll know more at that point. For example, what does Jaaron Simmons plan to do... If he decided he wanted to play out his senior year in his hometown that would be a game changer.
Question 2: How many scholarships over is Indiana now? I know they have 4 guys going through the process but some of these guys have no shot at getting drafted. So what are the chances that enough guys leave to open a spot for McKinley at IU?
2) The relationship between UD's new (but yet-to-be-finalized) coaching staff and McKinley and how it is developing (if it is developing at all) during this re-recruitment period.
3) The big programs who have now swooped in. Do any of them offer similar opportunity for playing time, NCAA success, and any other things which are important to McKinley?
So while I agree the chances for McKinley to end up recommitting back to UD are slim, I do think there is still a chance depending on how the dominoes fall. If there were a suitor out there for McKinley that seemed like a slam dunk better situation/option for him, I'd be the first to say it's over, but until then, I'm not writing it off.

They are actually at 15- two over the limit. They have 3 who are testing the NBA waters, but realistically none have a chance of being drafted high.

Yes...3...none are going to hire an agent.
Verbalcommits will not load right now...how many over are they if all 3 return? 1 over?

This all might not get resolved until May 24th.
Early eligibility declaration date is this Sunday, April 23rd.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017..._underclassmen
Early entrants Edit
Players who are not automatically eligible must declare their eligibility for the draft by notifying the NBA offices in writing no later than 60 days before the draft. For the 2017 draft, this date will fall on April 23. After that date "early entry" players may attend NBA pre-draft camps and individual team workouts to show off their skills and obtain feedback regarding their draft positions. Under the CBA a player may withdraw his name from consideration from the draft at any time before the final declaration date, which is 10 days before the draft. Under newly implemented NCAA rules, players have until May 24 (10 days after the draft combine) to withdraw from the draft and retain college eligibility.
A player who has hired an agent will forfeit his remaining college eligibility regardless of whether he is drafted.

2017 Class
Aside from Smith, both Al Durham and Clifton Moore also decided to take the plunge for IU once again as they officially rescinded their request for a release from scholarship after separate meetings with Miller.
With the scholarship number situation at a bloated 15 and the roster oversigned by 2, adding more players for the 2017-18 year seems unlikely, unless the trio of James Blackmon Jr., Thomas Bryant, and Robert Johnson all keep their names in the draft. If they do, look for quick action on former 3-star Dayton commit McKinley Wright, who finally was granted his release from scholarship in the wake of Archie Miller’s move from Dayton. While a number of schools are involved with Wright, Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball has expressed some interest in reconnecting with Archie Miller at Indiana. Wright, a 6’0”, 180 lb PG that can be seen below, is ranked #224 overall in the class of 2017.

From the crimsonquarry.com podcast above, I figured out why IU is oversigned by 2, not 1.
5th year senior Collin Hartman is returning. He was injured and did not play last year. VC had CH listed as a senior, so I thought that he was done.
And also from the podcast: Jeff Goodman on IU: IU should be in the NCAAT every year.
I thought that was an interesting comment.

I work with a lot of journalists around the country and I will tell you, the vast majority of print newsrooms are dominated by interns, and kids just out of high school. Not too many seem to make it past the age of 25 these days. Hard to live off what most papers pay. But it is a very well-written article.

"I feel like it improved my stock a lot,” Wright said. “I proved what I can do for the coaches that didn’t see me. So a lot of new schools reached out that I haven’t talked to before. I think I proved that I could play at that level to a lot of new schools.”
Doesn't sound like someone who is still seriously considering us. Our available playing time at PG is probably our biggest selling point right now...

Not only that, but even if he is still considering UD, AG has to get two sure PGs in here ASAP. He can't afford to wait on MW. The fact that he's got 14 schools and will take all the time in the world to choose along with our immediate need to ensure we have a PG or two, means the chances of him re-committing is very, very low.
So in effect, Crosby leaving might have the opposite effect and cause us to sign the first two PGs who are interested.

Seems to me the longer he takes to make a decision, the less options he will have, as schools will continue to fill available scholarships.

I'll be surprised if he signs with anybody but Indiana. I'd rather have players who want to be a Dayton Flyer, even it may mean the program will have some struggles early on with the coaching change.
Miller and him are a perfect match. Hope Coach Grant doesn't waste too much time with him.

He looks to be a nice player... but he is not gonna be a savior to any program. Hope he comes here, but if he doesn't, then NDB! And I feel the same about the Simmons kid.... nice player, but not a savior.

I didn't realize it was that easy. I'll just call up AG and have him stop by the PG store on the way home.
Problem solved.

I suspect there is a highly rated point guard with an eye on Dayton salivating on becoming a 4 year starter (or less ...aka 1+D). I refuse to believe with the recent profile of UD that AG has nobody in the works. If MW passes on Dayton - and that appears to be the case...ou well- his loss. Good luck going anywhere with more opportunity that sits here currently. In AG i trust.

Hey - I trust AG too. And if he decides to pass on MW then I'm on board. Problem is that he isn't passing on MW. AG has been quoted saying he is still recruiting MW...which means his other options might be more limited than some of you want to believe.
There is a lot of talk of grad gransfers and highly rated PGs. Aside from Simmons and Waters...who are these PGs everyone is talking about?

The assistant coaches work went on behind the scenes with very little public knowledge leaking out. I anticipate the same is going on with recruits. I'm confident AG and staff are all over PGs. With 40-50 days left, both sides of this dance are looking at all options. 4 years of solid playing time is HUGE for any player. Wright knows that as does everyone else we are talking to. It's early, but I would expect now that Easter is over, we will see recruits on campus as early as the upcoming weeks. Let's hope some of the recruiting boards start posting where players are making visits. I hate the silence as much as everyone.

Just because AG is still recruiting MW doesn't mean AG's other targets are more limited. Right now we have NO options. If we had one, he'd already be committed. AG recruiting MW simply means that MW meets AG's bar. AG may well be recruiting (and have a chance at getting) players better than MW. But given the fact that it's spring and we have 0 PGs on the roster, I'd be pretty sure AG will take anyone who meets his bar right now. If MW jumps first, great. But if not, we could wind up with someone better - or maybe not. The risk of striking out on all the targets and having to take someone you'd rather not take just to get any PG at all is too large.

I feel like we are saying the same thing. Others on the board seem to dismiss MW and say that AG just needs to get a grad transfer and/or higher rated PG. I'm sure he is looking at some of those options(Simmons/Waters), but the fact that he is still looking at MW means those other options not as readily available as some on this board want to believe.
I think we have a shot at Simmons - which would be great. a freshman PG still makes sense as his backup - and if not Waters - I'm still on board with MW (as is AG). The reality is that the freshman PG would be someone lower rated than both.

Maybe I'm being gloomy Gus, but I will be STUNNED if MW ends up here. He just seems too excited about all of the other attention he is getting.

I agree- when JC announced his transfer- my thought was that if ever MW wanted full reigns- that would have been a perfect opportunity. I think he believes he's got a UD ride just sitting there as a last resort. I'd be perfectly fine with someone like Khari Price.

I'd be shocked if he winds up here because he seems to be thinking of UD as a "backup" option (if that). If that's the case, by the time he decides he'd want to come here (if ever), we would have already taken another PG - and probably 2.

Look at it this way - you've locked down a homecoming date with a 7. Then, due to unforeseen events, 8's and 8 and a halves are available and showing a great deal of interest in you. What would the average 18 year old male do?

Give me the 5 or the 6 everyday over the 9s and 10s.

He'd back out of his date with the 7 and start fishing around with the 8.5's all the while giving the "7" some hope.
The 7 would also start looking but to save a little face would leave the door open just in case.
The dad of the 7 girl would tell her to move on, he doesn't deserve the time of day from you and then tell you to pick the "5" guy because he'll take you to the dance!

Go 10 or got home! As this picture proves, anything less is too hard to chew.

Or, as Jimmy Soul said
If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
don't make a pretty woman you wife,
So from my personal point of view
get an ugly girl to marry you.

So what do you do if you are an ugly guy and the pretty girl wants to marry you because she has the same concerns about marrying a handsome man?
