2019 Schedule

Since it’s difficult to follow spring matches, I’ll work on the 2019 schedule. tOSU scheduled 3 A-10 teams - which should help all the conference teams’ RPI. tOSU had a down year last year. They will be better this fall. They were so young last year.

UD travels to Columbus on Sept 20-21 to compete against tOSU, ILL St and Miami, OH. This is probably the strongest “week-before conference starts” weekend I’ve seen from UD. I’m hoping the rest of the schedule is as tough. Tournament will come down to UD or tOSU.

tOSU also hosts VCU, TX Tech and Lehigh the first weekend (Aug 30-31) and Sept 6-7 they play Pitt, DUQ and UW-GB at Pitt. Those are both very good pre-conference tournaments that helps our rpi.

SLU travels to Marquette Sept 20-21. Northern IA and UW-GB also at that tournament. Another strong non-conference outing.

UD will NOT play X this year. They are re-building so probably good for both programs.

Other 2019 options:

KY this year or next
Louisville
Cincinnati this year or next

Big10
MI - scheduled spring past 2 years but not this spring - so maybe
Purdue - TH scheduled them before during first tenure
ILL - played NCAAs their in 2018
Penn St - maybe
IA - trying to get better and they have a good coach now. They would probably jump at playing UD.

Stanford + Cal Poly + someone - Stanford’s weight/conditioning coach is a UD football alum and married to vball alum Rachael Bro. Nice West Coast trip for Flyers. Could also be WA w/Cal Poly - we played them well at Pitt last year.

Toledo - former UD assistant under TH (Jason Oliver) is HC at Toledo now.

Others: Creighton, Wichita St, College of Charleston, Kenesaw St, TN, Ohio, WKY, KS, Notre Dame. Maybe MO St? I can’t remeber if we have a contract still open with them?

I’ll also add NE - for next year since I’m sure it’s too late this year. I don’t think NE travels anymore to venues without AC. Same for Penn State. It’s still worth traveling to play either of these teams.

Sheffield went into NE in 2010 and lost.
Affolder went into NE is 2012 and lost.
NE played at UD after that, so under TH, and UD lost.

I’d still go into Lincoln next year to try to knock them off. You have to go for biggest program win ever competition if you want to be a great program.

Some info I had gleaned from elsewhere, and if I have the conferences right, 2 from the SEC, Big10, AAC, MVC and MAC, and 1 from Big12 and ACC.

Filling in the teams with their 2018 finish...

2 SEC = #4 MO - plus I hope #1 KY
2 Big10 = #7 MI and #13 tOSU who will be much better this year.
2 ACC = probably #2 Cincy - any of the following would be good - #1UCF, #3 Tulane, #4 Tulsa, #7 Wichita State who had a down year last year and will be better.
2 MVC - #2 ILL St - plus one more. It won’t be #1 UNI. My guess is #5 MO St but could be #4 Valparasio or #3 Bradley
2 MAC - #2 Miami, #6 No ILL (no Ohio again this year?)
1 Big12 - probably #2 Baylor, but maybe #5 KS
1 ACC - probably not #1 Pitt. Guess is #2 Louisville or #6 Notre Dame who will be better this year.

2019 VB Release

exhibition : Pittsburgh
week 1 : Texas A&M, Florida and Louisville in Louisville
non-con: at Miami-Ohio
week 2 : Northern Illinois, Missouri and Michigan at Frericks
week 3 : SMU, Kansas State and Missouri State at Missouri State
week 4 : OSU Tournament
non-con: at Cincinnati

League: URI/Fordham/GMU/GW home and home
at La Salle, Duquesne and Saint Louis
hosting Davidson and VCU

Only 13 league games. That's a bit curious.

Edit: I think they missed a return game against Saint Louis. Currently the schedule shows an open weekend the first weekend in November.

exhibition : Pittsburgh GREAT Decision to go with a very tough exhibition match vs a red-blue scrimmage

week 1 : Texas A&M, Florida and Louisville in Louisville - we need that exhibit to get ready for this weekend. It will be one of the toughest pre-conference tournaments for D1 volleyball

non-con: at Miami-Ohio - Looks like we might be playing them twice this year

week 2 : Northern Illinois, Missouri and Michigan at Frericks - Another Top 10 pre-conference Tournament

week 3 : SMU, Kansas State and Missouri State at Missouri State - we owed MO St a match at their place. This is a better lineup than I was expecting. Kansas St is showing Weber St instead of SMU??? They both could be correct if they round-robin 5 teams at the event.

week 4 : Announced by another school as ILL St, Miami, OH and Ohio St at OSU

non-con: at Cincinnati - payback time. One we let slip away this past season.

League: URI/Fordham/GMU/GW home and home - article also has SLU as home-home with SLU at UD on Nov 1
at La Salle, Duquesne
hosting Davidson and VCU - I’m going with the line we are going to be so good and our rpi so small it won’t matter we only play VCU once. SLU better be a lot better this year. GW and GM should be better.

KY looks like a 2020 match which is a great start to that schedule. Louisville, Michigan and Missouri will also be in the mix.

Great schedule for 2019. Team needs to work hard this summer because it starts out as tough as I’ve ever seen it beginning the first weekend. Also...big thanks to those that put this together. Scheduling can be tough and this is the second year in a row they’ve gotten it released in April. As fans I know we all appreciate the quick release.

Without taking a deep dive, that is a challenging non-con schedule. The only match that feels out of place is Northern Illinois. But even NIU has a 107.6 RPI over the last 10 years. They had a bad couple of years in 2018 and 2017, but the overall trend says they won't stay bad for long. It could end up being challenging as well.

The home schedule with Michigan and Missouri brings two teams to Frericks that I'm excited to see on the schedule. I've thought Missouri would be a good opponent for a long time. I'm glad they are finally playing the Flyers. There will be plenty of opportunities for quality wins.

Without too much detail, I think Horsmon is right. I think overall, the A-10 will improve. I still think Dayton and VCU will be heavy favorites to hold onto the top 2 spots, but I do think some of the other teams will improve. SLU graduates only 4 Senior who played limited roles. I think, Horsmon may be speaking largely about SLU when he says 'our league had a lot of young players on programs that are traditionally strong.' SLU of 2018 was bad early but played strong down the stretch. They may begin to close the gap between the pack and the favorites.

The 2019 schedule is now visible on the website. I have a couple of new thoughts/questions.

- What is going on in the first weekend? Why will two SEC teams be playing in Louisville? Texas A&M and Florida can't be playing each other, right? Is there a 5th team. Will T A&M and UF only be playing two matches?

-Not only does Dayton play VCU just one time, Dayton won't play VCU until the last match of the year before post season play. We may have to wait until the 14th and last conference game before the top two teams meet. And Dayton starts the A-10 season with what might be the 2nd toughest conference match, at SLU. At SLU on Sept. 28th. Hosting VCU Nov. 17th. I hope Dayton vs. VCU in 2019 is worth the wait.

Dayton has an all time record of 73 W and 79 L against this lineup of non-con opponents (only counting Miami OH once). Most of those previous 152 matches were against Cincinnati and Miami OH. Those two opponents account for 54.6 percent of previous matches. Dayton has had the most success against Miami of Ohio with a 21 and 13 record in the Flyer's favor. Dayton and Cincinnati have been even opponents with Dayton owning a slight edge, 25 W to 24 L.

When you remove those two teams, Dayton has a record of 27 W and 42 L against the remaining teams. Dayton owns only one winning record against these remaining teams. Dayton is 2 and 1 against Missouri State. Dayton looks like they have never played Texas A&M or SMU.

Schools usually announce how many teams made the ncaa tourney the previous year. I’m taking that one step further, and pulled up all the returning All-Americans we will face this season. When you get to the ncaa you will see a ton of AAs on all team when you get to the second round. You have to be able to stop these superstars to win and get to the second weekend. Here’s the breakdown.

Pitt - I loved that TH scheduled an exhibition with Pitt. We’ve played them the last two years in the regular season and in the NCAAs three years ago up at Penn State. We weren’t going to get them schedule in-season again this year. Maybe in a year or two, but not this year. But their coach agreed to the exhibition match and that shows he respects UD even tho we haven’t beaten them yet. They went 30-2 last year. I love it even more now that I’ve looked up returning AAs. Pitt returns FOUR all-Americans - the most of any team we face this year. (SR Rightside OH Markovic 3rd team, SR MB VanBuskirk HM, SR OH Williams, HM and JR OH Lund, HM who played great against us last year.) Thats a whole lot of hitting talent that has a whole lot of experience. This is great scheduling. We are going to test out young-talent team right out of the gate against this Loaded Pitt team. Yes it’s only an exhibition - but you should go. We are very lucky it’s at Frericks. This will be one heck of a Volleyball Match and perfect to prepare us for week one. All the following AAs are Honorable Mention AAs, except the Cincy player.

Florida - returns 3 AAs. (SR MB Kramer, RSJR Rightside OH Carlton, SO OH Hall) Again, a lot of powerful hitting talent at FL. The Pitt match will help us prepare for this match. We were not a great blocking team last year. We will need to be better this year to beat FL.

TXAM - 1AA. (SR OH Hans)

Louisville -1 AA. (SR OH McHenry) Louisville graduated two additional AAs - their setter and Libero - who played big roles in defeating UD in the NCAAs.

MO - returns 1 AA. (JR OH DeBerg.) We see them in week 2.
MI - surprisingly no returning AAs. We see them in week 2.

Kansas St - returns 2 AAs. (RSSR S Dixon, SO Rightside OH Mutiri) Will be good to face an AA setter in week 3.

Cincinnati - 1 returning AA. (RSSR OH Thompson - 3rd team AA). She was great in last year’s match. We will have gone up against 9 AA outside hitters and several MBs before we get to this match.

VCU - 1 returning AA. (SR MB Sneed.) we don’t see them until the last regular season match in November.

UD - 1 returning AA. (RSJR S/Rightside OH Westbeld.) 2nd in the country in triple doubles last year. I expect her to be even better at terminating balls and improvement in her blocking. And she could be joined by some of her teammates with AA honors this year. At the top of that potential list is Jamie, Allie, Maura, Amelia and Rachael. I’m not sure if Dayton has ever RETURNED more than one AA going into a season. Next year at this time I would guess we will and the number could be as high as the four Pitt returns this year. Not many teams can say that or do it.

I’m going to throw out a 2020 schedule comment...we need to call Stanford and get them booked. Their coach was at Illinois for several years before taking the Stanford job about 3 years ago. I’m pretty sure during Horsmon’s first era at UD ILL was on our schedule. I’m also pretty sure we recruited against each other back then from around the area.

Also, the Stanford vball strength and conditioning coach is a UD alum and married to a UD volleyball alum.

Finally, Stanford traveled to SLU to play when they opened their new vball court/arena several years ago.

Volleyball hasn’t really traveled anywhere on too big of a trip. Stanford looks good to me.
