1931: Almost Had Our Own Palestra / Cameron Indoor
UD eCommons is a treasure trove to pass time on a rainy day, of which Ohio's having PLENTY lately.
Did you know UD proposed its own "hoops cathedral" in 1931 to replace the old Playhouse / Rike Center for Fine Arts? Sadly it never came to pass.
Below and pdf links:
-- Proposed (but never built) Fieldhouse, June 1931 Alumnus
https://ecommons.udayton.edu/cgi/vie...ext=dayton_mag
-- Proposed fieldhouse in 1946 that has since evolved into Frericks Center
https://ecommons.udayton.edu/cgi/vie...ext=dayton_mag
PLANS for the proposed Field House at the University of Dayton were submitted June 6 to Very Rev. Bernard P. O'Reilly, S. M., President of the Uni-versity. The architect's drawings, submitted by Howard Germann, are shown above. They were submitted at the request of a committee appointed by the Associate Board of Lay Trustees to investigate ways and means of erecting the Field House. No definite plans for the erection of the Field House can be announced at this time, however. Included on the committee are Harry F. Finke, chair-man, Albert J. Kemper, George H. Kramer, Martin C. Kuntz, George Walther, Very Rev. Bernard P. O'Reilly and Bernard T. Schad, S.M., faculty supervisor of athletics. Estimated cost of the Field House will be $350,000. It will be one of the most complete and modern physical education plants to be found anywhere. The total length of the structure will be 452 feet. The fie ld house section will be 150 x 300 feet and the swimming pool section will be 62 x 100 feet. The pool itself will be 25 x 75 feet. Locker rooms, shower rooms, trophy rooms, offices, coaches' rooms, medical room, trainers' room, vi siting officials' rooms, wrestling rooms, and boxing rooms are included in the plans. There will be one main basketball court and temporary courts may be erected also. Temporary structures for galleries for basketball tournaments will be included. There will be a dirt floor for indoor football practice. The building will be large enough to accommodate foot-ball crowds between halves of games also. Entrance to the stadium will be through the Field House, according to these plans. Handball courts are included in the plans also and at the south end of the building a rifle range will be constructed. Mr. Germann visited numerous physical education plants to get ideas for the U of D Field House.

Wow, very cool. Glad it never went forward . . . we might still be playing there. Total cost was $350,000 . . . I bet the players chairs in the current men's locker room cost $350,000!

A guy named "Germann" proposed drawings in 1931 that look a bit too much like the Reichstag. . . maybe better it wasn't built.

Ha ha! $6M adjusted for inflation, so maybe comparable to Arena cost in 1969.

Bill Ginn, whose 245 points this season broke an all-time U.D. scoring record, voiced the typical student opinion : "The new field house sounds great to me. I'm just a fresh-man now and by the time I'm a junior U.D.'s team should be playing on their own floor and I hope to be on that team. By having our own field house we will be able to schedule more games with better schools."

Item ONE highlighted, I'd say we've come a long way from that type of skill! Go Flyers!
Item TWO highlighted, seems this position is still being taken today that a newer facility (as in this case 1947 or in the recent improvements would entice teams to play us at home) or go against those that say we should play better teams on the road.
Either way these articles are very entertaining to read. Just like Rollo's!
