Ive not seen a boxscore....but i think i heard it implied Duke lost to Clemson last night, if true, oh how glorious. Almost as sweet as a _avier loss.
"I mean c'mon. I'm hearing people say the Atlantic 10 is getting 6 teams in the tournament this year. Give me a break, i mean, they are good but put them in our conference." - Coach K after the 2014 ACC tournament, days before the A-10 got......6 teams in.

That win moved Alabama up to #43 in RPI ranking. Another top 50 win for Flyers.

Do you realize Duke does not have a win against an RPI top 50 team? Louisville either.

Iowa up 47 -25 @ the half @ #4 Michigan State
Jok with 19 points at the half, our Flyer guards held him to 12 for the game.
Gesell had two quick fouls and set the last 16 minutes or so of the half.
VERY THANKFUL we played Iowa when we did. They could easily win the Big 10.

The absolute best part of Coach K's whining is that the pesky sixth team from the A10 beat three P5 teams on the way to the Elite 8.

Gonzaga gets top 25 rank then tanks at home. Guess it can happen to anyone, anytime, not just UD.

I wouldn't put losing by a point to the #55 RPI ranked team in the same category as losing to a #200+ RPI ranked team and I sure wouldn't call it tanking.

However, there is a big difference between losing at home and losing on the road.

We have one of those home losses as well when we were on the verge of being ranked. On selection Sunday I'd take 2 of those losses (home vs. Top 100 RPI) over LaSalle (200+)

I think if you made that swap, we may be ranked. The only thing working against us vs the bottom of the list is the bad bad loss.

Monmouth wins at Iona 110-102. Snaps Gaels 26 game home win streak.
Also, some pushing and shoving after the game between the players. Might be some discipline coming for some of them.

Maryland's lead was more than 40 points for a stretch in the second half, too. Yikes.

It will be interesting to see how much of a bump in the ratings Iowa gets. They and Mich St need to trade places.

Not sure if anyone saw this last night on ESPNU, Oregon State and Utah were in a close one, when this happened:

I've never seen that before.

I was watching that last night and couldn't believe my eyes.... He did get a Flagrant II and was ejected, even though it was his 5th personal. But there has got to be more .... I would expect a 5 or 10 game suspension!

I was listening to the talking heads on the radio about the four remaing teams left in the NFL playoffs. They spoke about North Carolina. They said that they are a very good team but during the season they have shown the flaw of letting teams back into the game. They cited several examples. They believed that it was because their defense eased up in games. Apparently, the head coach was asked about this issue and he blamed himself stating that he needed to keep his team focused. He defended his players. The talking heads disagreed. They felt that it was up to the players to focus and remain consistent on defense even when they have a lead. The players need to look at themselves. I believe that there is a correlary to the Dayton game tonight against St. Bonaventure. I predict that Daytpn will get a lead. But, the players need to look at themselves and maintain consistent defense to not allow the Bonnies back into this game. It is all about DEFENSE.

Under the generic heading of "defense" I agree. But in our case on the road we have to generate some offense from that defense. When a team holds the ball for 20 seconds and then goes into their offense, it limits the opportunities we have to get out on the break. Even worse when they make a 3pt or And1 at the end of the 30 second clock. Our anemic road shooting in the half court needs to be supplemented with turnovers and fast breaks. We can't make a living on the road with chuck and chase 3 pointers.
The biggest Game of Note is tonight. This is going to be a heck of a test.

Please, tell me how the ball was flowing so freely for the entire game when Oklahoma had 21 assists in 55 minutes of play to score 106 points.
Please, tell me how the ball was flowing so freely for the entire game when Kansas had 17 assists in 55 minutes of play to score 109 points. Seriously?? 17 assists on 109 points?! WOW. It was actually worse than I thought!
Dayton had a total stinker against Duquesne and yet we had 16 assists in 40 minutes to score 66 points (and had almost the same number of FT's and FTA as Kansas / Oklahoma)!!
17 assists for 109 points is not beautiful basketball, and it's not a single 5 minute lull by 1 team. It's uninteresting offensive execution. Unless you like that sort of thing. I do not.

Another exciting game last night that Charles Barkley would be proud of. 24 assists on 58 baskets (159 points) as Oklahoma loses to Iowa State. Exciting? Yes. Pretty? No. It's "4th and 1" offense, just line everyone up and run at them as hard as you can.
Just for comparison, when UD lost a total stinker of a game to LaSalle, there were 22 assists on 37 baskets (118 points).
Against GW there were 38 assists on 53 goals (147 points). Davidson was 31 assists on 53 goals (154 points).

I was right! Dayton got a huge lead against the Bonnies and then they gave it up, just like i predicted. They almost blew it. If they had lost this game, it would have been a pandemic crash. It could have been a complete demoralization. But, hold the horses; they managed to get a win. Quick, Trigger and Tonto; let's get out of town (Olean) as fast as you can. Get home and consider it a learning experience. DEFENSE is the key to holding onto a lead.

#106 RPI Georgetown beats Xavier at home by 9. X has to get out of that crappy league and away from the low RPI dregs. They can't use the "injured player excuse" in this one.

A few pithy observations in re tonight's action:
1) Where was THAT _avier team on the Sunday after Thanksgiving?!
2) Nice to see SEMO get a win, even if it was only over Hannibal Lecter, or whatever that school's called.
3) How's that Big Ten career working out for you, Maverick Morgan? UD still not good enough for you?
OK, my evil twin Snarky (the 8th Dwarf) is going to bed now. Good night, Gracie!

With God as my witness, I swear I first read that as Hannibal-Lector college and thought What???? Somebody needs to rethink the name of that school, though perhaps the reference is too dated to matter to todays soon to be graduating high schoolers.

Wednesday 1/20:
Mason @ Fordham
VTech @ ND (getting votes I believe)
Temple @ LaSalle (might be a double header at the Palestra)
Duquesne @ VCU
Whichita St @ Northern Iowa (Van Fleet is back and WSU is rolling, NIU got a couple of big wins, but has dropped a few lately)
Davidson @ SLU (8:00 start tells me this one is on CBSN or NBCS, whichever has the 8:00 Wednesday night A10 game)
Vandy @ Tennessee
Saint Joes @ Penn (2nd part of a double header mentioned above????)
There are a handful of ranked teams playing, but none in the 20-25 range that might slip out with a lose, and in my uneducated opinion, few appeared poised for an upset this evening, most are against really bad teams or on the ranked teams home court. Of course that means we'll see 3-4 of them fall tonight Kind of an uneventful evening outside of that WSU @ NIU game.

Man, I don't miss watching Xavier games. Outside of Indiana, that's the whiniest, worst home crowd in college basketball. There was like a constant, steady boo for about the last five minutes of the game last night.

Actually, the Trojans are a NAIA school in Hannibal, Missouri - the result of a merger of Hannibal College and nearby LaGrange College in 1928. They have a bible studies major but no culinary school . . .

Thursday 1/21:
#9 Iowa @ Rutgers
#23 Kentucky @ Arkansas (a Hog win would be a double benefit)
Memphis @ UC (both of these 2 teams hoping to make the AAC more than 1 bid)
Elon @ Bill & Mary
Chattanooga @ UNC-Greensboro
North Florida @ SC Upstate
Monmouth @ Manhattan
Ohio St @ #22 Purdue
#21 USC @ Oregon
Good potential tonight for UD, I think only Arkansas is a dog of UD's OOC opponents tonight, but they are at home vs a very talented, but very struggling UK, I doubt Purdon't falls at home to OSU, but Oregon over USC wouldn't be an upset, potentially clearing up some room at the bottom of the top 25 (though Oregon is likely close as well in the rankings and a win over a ranked team would resonate more next monday than a UD win at Fordham.)

Gibbs takes 22 shots to get 26 pts vs SLU. That's fine when you're winning, but can be a problem when you aren't. Creates a recipe for teams to let him have his shots and worry about defending the other four.

Actually, I believe Glen's arrows are limited to teams ranked/receiving votes, so there is a correlation to UD. Down arrows = good.

The wheels have come off for Davidson, but that is a team capable of beating anyone. I hope they beat VCU.

Believe every team that is ranked that won got a up arrow. Every ranked team that lost got a down arrow. Up be good for that team, down be bad for that team.

I think they are relying too much on Gibbs. He's a heck of a player, but their offense has become too dependent on him, especially at crunch time.

They don't play defense. That's the problem. Just like what prevented UD defeating Davidson and St Bonnie by double digits. Except at Davidson it is 40 minutes of no defense. You won't play consistent ball, especially on the road by trying to play first to 95 wins.

The Epiphany of Jim Crews?
The bigger story of the SLU win over Davidson may be that Jim Crews turned a poor defensive team (SLU) into an offensive juggernaut against a poorer defensive team in Davidson. Had SLU expended themselves on "D" they would have lost at home by about 79-73. Crews ignored defense and let them score at will as did Davidson and they won 96-87. Good decision by coach Crews to realize he could not win with bad defense but he could if they played better offense. He reinvented his team kind of like Archie did last year due to roster issues. Maybe Jim Crews is the new Paul Westhead of the Atlantic Ten.

The arrows roughly correlate to that games affect on a teams ranking (and post season prospects). Seton Hall losing to #4 Villanova neither hurt nor helped Seton Hall's prospects - hence, no arrow for Seton Hall. Nebraska's win at #11 Michigan St was very damaging to Michigan St (red arrow) but Nebraska still has no post season prospects (no arrow). Kansas State's double overtime loss at #13 Baylor did not damage their post-season resume (no arrow) but helped Baylor's standing (green arrow). Most of the teams in the 'under the radar' section are from one bid conferences - they are playing for tournament seeding (or the faint hope of an at-large bid).
Hope that helps.

FWIW, some of these games have already been moved to their new time/date due to Jonas (Can't stop thinking about Weezer, thanks weather guys), some may still get moved from their currently listed time/date.
Friday 1/22:
Duquesne @ Mason (2:00 tip time)
Rhody @ GW (5:00 tip time, don't now if it will still be on ESPN2 or not)
Valpo @ Wright State (WSU has been on a roll, some think Valpo could enter the at large conversation with a sweep thru the Horizon but loss in their tournament)
Saturday 1/23:
#24 South Carolina @ Tennessee
St Louis @ UMass
#1 Okie @ #13 Baylor
BC @ Notre Dame (getting votes)
Northwestern @ #25 Indiana
Davidson @ Richmond (I'm guessing this gets moved to another day)
#6 WVU @ Texas Tech
Chattanooga @ VMI
LSU @ Bama
#20 Duke (trying to avoid a 4th straight loss) @ NC State
Seton Hall @ #5 X
Bonnies @ VCU (I think this one has already been moved to monday)
Vandy @ #23 Kentucky
Bill & Mary @ Hofstra
Arkansas @ Georgia
Miami (oh) @ Akron
#7 Maryland @ #11 Mich St
#18 Butler @ Creighton
Sunday 1/24:
#22 Purdue @ #9 Iowa
#16 Providence @ #4 Nova
#21 USC @ Oregon St
Saint Joes @ Lasalle

Valpo's RPI ranking is 27 and the next best Horizon team is Wisc-GB at 143 so in all likelihood, their RPI ranking is going to go down. They are 0-1 against RPI top 50 with no opportunity to get any good wins. Don't see any way they get an at large bid.
Right now, Monmouth may be the only team from a traditional 1 bid conference that has a shot at an at large bid and that includes the WCC. St Marys is RPI 37 with a 0-0, 2-1 record against top 25/50. Gonzaga is 61 and 0-2, 0-4.

Only way is thru a gaudy number of wins, sweeping conference play would be a bonus. With the exception of it meaning the Flyers would be left out, I wouldn't have much issue if the committee threw a bone and stuck them in the play-in game if they swept out, but lost in their conference finals (I believe the way the Horizon works, that would be on their home court). RPI would probably sit somewhere in the 20s if that happened. RPI forecast says they're expected rpi should they sweep out would be around 23rd so figure going to the finals and dropping a game, that would be an extra win or 2, plus 1 loss, would probably put their rpi in the upper 20s, maybe low 30s. I think that is roughly the rpi that colorado st (or perhaps a different team from colorado) had (low 30s) when they were left out.
Its really, really hard to sweep a conference season, so I don't expect it, but if I was a fan of a team on the bubble, I wouldn't want Valpo to give the committee reason to include them as an at large, certainly nobody else in the conference is going to.

Medford - I agree what you laid out would give them a shot but even with that the committee has shown a penchant to leave a team out that has not played anybody. I think they did the same to Drexel or someone like that a few years back. Even the AAC could go 1 bid. The bubble will be loaded to the hilt with the 4/5th team from ACC, Big10, PAC12, SEC. Heck the Big12 may get 7 teams in. I can certainly envision the discussion that a team like Valpo that lost in their conference finals deserve to be in over the 5ht best Big10 team.

The projected sos's for those 4 schools are not going to help their causes:
Gonzaga 99
St. Mary's 172
Valpo 168
Monmouth 153

Interesting, Duke and NC St are playing today, despite very bad ice on the roads and a bad weather emergency, so cars not really allowed out. The governor in his press conference told people do not go to the game. But wait, isn't college basketball considered an emergency for travel in NC.

Good win for the other local team that seems to have turned their season around (helps to be healthy). Nice coverage by Archdeacon in this morning's DDN.

Temple fans storming the court after the Owls end SMU's unbeaten streak at 18. Believe that is their 3rd top 25 win this year. Kinda miss not playing them any more in the A10.

Iowa is up 10 at home on #22 Purdue. Also worth rooting for someone to run away with this Memphis/East Carolina game. Don't want it going to overtime or we won't be watching the first few minutes of Dayton/ Fordham.

I saw that the Villanova vs. Providence game today was played at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly where the 76ers play. The game drew 7,191 people. I am not sure why they needed a NBA arena for a crowd of that size.
Villanova's home arena on Villanova's campus, The Pavilion, seats 6,500.

I understand that they had a bit of snow in Philly, maybe that affected the crowd size

Not sure why you posted this here, but just curious: Did St. John's and DePaul secede? ;-)

St. John's and DePaul will feel really good about the great league that they are a part of as they watch us winning in the NCAA Tournament.

Glad to see Providence doing well in the Little East, cause with the same team we now have, we beat them like an old mule.

Providence on our ooc schedule would be cool.
We actually don't gain anything by scheduling the Friars at Providence because it would go in the books as a home game for us. Also they would only have a year to prepare.

Another week of chasing down the ranking dreams
Monday 1/25:
Davidson (+6) @ Richmond
#24 Duke (+3.5) @ #15 Miami
And just for fun:
#4 Kansas (+1.5) @ #14 Iowa St
Light night, as expected for a monday, but some entertaining games non the less. Not sure if the Davidson/Richmond game is televised, IIRC this was rescheduled from the weekend due to Jonas.

Duke likely will not be in the top 25 next week after losing its 4th of its last 5 games to Miami. Dickie V announced the game on ESPN and his unhealthy obsession for Duke obviously caused him pain.
Best part: Door is open for the Flyers. Get it done this week.

He will be coach of the year. Do you know how hard it is to coach when you only have 6 McDonald's all americans when you are used to having 10?
Coach K put the Dick in Dickie V. Take that however you want.

Interesting to see that Gibbs had a horrendous shooting night for Davidson and wound up with only 11 points. I guess he is human after all.

Realistically, unless we just about run the table or MAYBE finish something like 27-5, we're pretty much at our RPI ceiling right now.
For once, it's really only about how we finish and not how much other teams may help us or how crowded the bubble is.

So one of biggest collapses of year?
Wake 70 Virginia 63 with 24 seconds left. UVA turns it over, Wake gives it back, UVA hits 3. Wake misses two foul shots. UVA hits 3. Wake makes one of two foul shots. UVA banks in three. Final UVA 72 Wake 71. Not often you lose a game up 7 with possession and 24 seconds left.
